Why is Scotland’s public holiday on Monday after Saturday’s football match?

Neverflyingagain · 14/06/2026 11:16

With the caveat that I don't follow football and my employer plus the local authority aren't shutting...
Why is there a public holiday on Monday when the football game was Saturday into Sunday? I honestly thought it was because the game would be Sunday into Monday.
Did the Scottish Parliament get their timings wrong or am I missing something?

The miracle of Scotland winning the World Cup would be off the charts. Same for England.

Yes, making the finals an achievement. Brilliant!

However, what happens if we get through to the next group? What if one of the future games is during the week? What if we make the final finals? What if we win?

It was a poorly thought out, performative bribe for votes.

Lucky him. Wish I could say the same.

Yes but what I don't understand is why you didn't if you work for GCC. They ALL got it.

GCC essential workers will get double time tomorrow.

Our dump is closed today because apparently the workers were given a choice of today or Monday for the holiday 🙄 so they are off when most people might actually want to be going to the dump.

The whole thing is bloody ridiculous, what a thing to give a holiday for. Total gimmick by the SNP before the election. Schools off just before they’re off for nearly 7 weeks.

I honestly thought you were calling your work "a dump" there. So you couldn't go to an actual dump? Poor you 🤐

Ah right. Thank you.

TokyoSushi · 14/06/2026 14:44

I honestly believe that somebody saw the scheduling and thought the game was tonight…

Are you actually saying that your fellow Scots decided how to vote based on an extra bank holiday when we get 12 anyway?

You really have a poor view of the people you live among.

Don't suppose you support RFC or Hearts?

weebarra · 14/06/2026 14:48

I’m public sector and don’t get it. Senior management said that our customers will still want to be able to see us so we should still be available which is fair enough.

ScoStud · 14/06/2026 14:49

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 14/06/2026 13:16

Is anyone actually getting the day off? Apart from our GPs, who take every single public/local/bank holiday? Schools are in, shops open as usual.

The NHS gets it which means everyone working, which is a lot, should be getting paid public holiday rates.
I agree with PP, I think they got the dates wrong and thought it was tonight so no-one would turn up at work on Monday anyway. The number of people I spoke to a couple of months ago who were insisting the game was overnight Sunday night and that’s why we were being given a public holiday!

Hi, did you ask them what your customers do for the other 12 bank holidays?

JMSA · 14/06/2026 14:51

No day off school tomorrow for Edinburgh children.

ERthree · 14/06/2026 14:52

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · 14/06/2026 12:27

Thank you @ERthree he is still in Crosshouse just now - going through the process of monitoring, assessing and medically managing, they are talking about echo hopefully on Monday then transfer to either Hairmyres or Golden Jubliee for angiogram.

He is a self employed tradesman and don't think he has got it into his head yet he'll probably be off for several weeks if not months.

Glad he is doing ok and at least Hairmyers and Golden Jubilee are close by. Take all the help you can get from anyone that offers. As for work does he have sickness insurance? Please look at the entitled2 website, he has paid his NI so if he needs help from the government take it.
He will get back on his feet, life may be just a wee bit different. The biggest thing is moving, walking around the house every half hour and building it up, it really is the only way to keep his stamina topped up ( i couldn't even shower myself for the first week or empty the washing machine for a month) but it soon comes back
Look after yourself too as he needs you. Fingers crossed all goes well🌺

My son works for Glasgow CC and he’s got it.

That doesn’t surprise me.

There are a lot of essential workers in councils who have to work (and therefore be paid public holiday rates)
I know someone who is a Councillor in one of the councils who haven’t got the public holiday. He said he was sad they hadn’t been able to give it but they would have had to axe a budget to something else to fund the public holiday pay for all their front line workers in essential services

I can understand that but have no idea how it relates to my post?

If you are drinking until 4am Sunday morning you are unlikely to be fit to drive rush hour Monday morning.

There's an awful lot of different roles and departments in a local authority. Some privately owned companies also 'work' for public bodies. It's not all black and white.

Not all of us can have it off, is what the other poster was trying to explain.

Yes I know. But I was going by your post about the LA and you not having it off. If you work for a private contractor then you’re not a council employee and they all have it off. That all!

Differentforgirls · 14/06/2026 17:33

JMSA · 14/06/2026 17:28

I don’t think I have tbh.

BashfulClam · 14/06/2026 17:34

My private sector workplace gave us its tbh I actually need it as I did an all nighter last night. I have no idea how I managed that when I was younger. Went to bed at 5 and got up at midday and still feel absolutely fucked! We are to be mindful of our English colleagues as they are already pissed off that we get 9 bank holidays due to the 2nd January.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 14/06/2026 17:58

This "performative bribe for votes" thing is hilarious.

How many folk do mumsnetters actually think went down to the polling station last month thinking "aye, you know what, I'm going to vote SNP because a handful of Councils elected to observe an optional Bank Holiday"?

It's risible, laughable garbage, but absolutely typical of the prevailing "oooooh Essenpee Baaaaaaad!" drivel all over anything vaguely Scotland-related on this forum.

Neverflyingagain · 14/06/2026 18:14

intrepidpanda · 14/06/2026 15:11

If the game had been Sunday into Monday I could have understood this justification. The Scottish game was Saturday into Sunday. Surely even we Scots aren't going to still be drinking and celebrating over 24 hours later.

I agree they got the date / time wrong. I have it and all that means is i need to play catch up. I watched it and definitely don't need a day off tomorrow to recover but I will enjoy the day off to myself as dp at work and dc at school!
