Why is Scotland’s public holiday on Monday after Saturday’s football match?

With the caveat that I don't follow football and my employer plus the local authority aren't shutting...
Why is there a public holiday on Monday when the football game was Saturday into Sunday? I honestly thought it was because the game would be Sunday into Monday.
Did the Scottish Parliament get their timings wrong or am I missing something?

I don’t think many places are having it except nhs, gp surgeries etc. While Scotland being in the World Cup should be enjoyed and celebrated, as someone whose husband had a heart attack this weekend it’s fucking scandalous when the nhs is struggling to then choose to lose so many man hours for a game of football.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Thank you @ERthree he is still in Crosshouse just now - going through the process of monitoring, assessing and medically managing, they are talking about echo hopefully on Monday then transfer to either Hairmyres or Golden Jubliee for angiogram.

He is a self employed tradesman and don't think he has got it into his head yet he'll probably be off for several weeks if not months.

He survived the HA both of you enjoy that fact.

reality of the recovery period will hit him soon enough. Hopefully he has some insurance to help you financially. Do you work?

The match wasn't on Saturday for the fans at home, kick off was the early hours of Sunday morning. Many many fans will still be celebrating until tonight and will still be over the limit ( remembers ours is 22mg/100ml) come Monday morning so it is best they stay in bed.

Oh I'm fully aware that the match happened at 2am overnight. I'd gone to bed early to get a decent sleep, expecting to be disturbed by football loving neighbours tonight only to be woken last night by them. Why did I think it was tonight into tomorrow??? Because they have given a public holiday tomorrow so children can stay up to watch the game etc etc

Thanks for replies. I don't understand why they have given an extra public holiday. That's my point. Not that the public holiday should have been today (Sunday). I understand how public holidays work when they fall on a weekend!!!
If it's so people can drink all the way through Saturday - overnight - all day Sunday then we really do have an alcohol problem far worse than I realised, and one which is Govt approved and encouraged.
If Scotland win at the football then have an extra public holiday so they can parade in the streets etc etc and have a homecoming. That's the time to have an extra holiday.

If Scotland win the WC they'll need to have a week long bank holiday! As much as I celebrate Scotland's win this morning, they're not going to win the WC. I'm a bit surprised they've (half) given a BH for this really.

StrictlyCoffee · 14/06/2026 12:46

Our dump is closed today because apparently the workers were given a choice of today or Monday for the holiday 🙄 so they are off when most people might actually want to be going to the dump.

The whole thing is bloody ridiculous, what a thing to give a holiday for. Total gimmick by the SNP before the election. Schools off just before they’re off for nearly 7 weeks.

balkanscot · 14/06/2026 12:49

Edinburgh City Council schools are on tomorrow (Monday 15th June). DS’s school had to send an email reminder to parents that schools are open as usual.

Most don't have the extra holiday though. It was just a political gimmick.

Usual SNP guff
I think they probably did get the date wrong, lots of people seemed to think the game was tonight, because of the holiday
The only people who seem to be off work are in the public sector

AnonymityAnonymity · 14/06/2026 12:51

@Herewegoagainandagainandagain

Really sorry about your DH. I hope he is doing ok.

I didn't know Monday was a bank holiday. I just checked and I see my council chose not to observe it. An actual sensible decision by them for once

My doctors surgery frequently sends texts to say they are only operating an emergencies only policy because of staff shortages so I would be extremely annoyed if they were taking a bank holiday on Monday.

I'm a football fan but I don't see why getting to the world cup requires a bank holiday. If by some miracle we win it that's a different matter.

Delphiniumandlupins · 14/06/2026 13:03

Och, getting to the World Cup is a small miracle so why not celebrate it? We're not going to win it, but we can enjoy it for now.

I work in glasgow local authority in the public sector and we don't have the day off for the holiday.

My children in another local authority do have Monday off school.

Not great having to take a days annual leave unexpectedly when my full annual leave was already pre-organised with all the other school holidays. (Single parent with no family help)

I have a lot of colleagues in the same boat now scrambling for childcare since they announced the BH. We all thought the game would have been sun/mon, so are a little miffed at the unnecessary day off for a small number of people. Would have been fine if EVERYONE was given it. It's causing a lot of problems in my work, especially for parents.

The miracle of Scotland winning the World Cup would be off the charts. Same for England.

People who work for us but live in Scotland are taking it. They are going to have a shock on Tuesday when they come in and find a days annual leave missing.

Formal agreement with them is that they take English bank holidays, which they signed up to, but just decided to take this one because it’s the World Cup.

As your employer didn't they agree it with you first. If your workplace is in England then they should know they won't get the extra day.

They do know, they are just being dicks.

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 14/06/2026 13:16

Is anyone actually getting the day off? Apart from our GPs, who take every single public/local/bank holiday? Schools are in, shops open as usual.

Aberdeen, Glasgow, South Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and Dundee.

This. It is not a BH for the whole of Scotland. Some individual councils voted for them, others declined.

This is also the case with local holidays, why is this one causing havoc and those don’t?

They do. It’s ok for me not to mention them, given the discussion is about a specific. It’s always an issue. My contribution to the thread is that it’s cause my an extra day of havoc. Sorry for not being clear. It makes no odds to me either way as I have no DC in school and no job to consider anyway.

Monty36 · 14/06/2026 13:26

The party will be long. And the drinking much. So may as well acknowledge that.

Thisisnotmyid · 14/06/2026 13:46

So what if we got a bank holiday? Qualifying was nothing short of extraordinary for us and it’s one day in the grand scheme of things. There are far bigger problems in the world than Scotland getting an extra holiday.

LlynTegid · 14/06/2026 13:48

The SNP doing something performative? Never heard that one before!!!

ManyShapesOfPasta · 14/06/2026 13:57

I only just found out today the football was last night.
Obviously I'm not a fan either, but according to the group I just saw in the corner shop Scotland are going to beat England in the final!

NameChangeScot · 14/06/2026 14:22

It's once in 28yrs. We stayed up for the game last night and all shattered today. Worth it though!

But...

Schools aren't off tomorrow, ds's will be there are usual. DP who works for the NHS will be going to work as usual. I will be working as usual. Who is actually getting this holiday 😆?

Dp and I both have had the hours added to our annual leave allowance, pro-rata but the nature of our jobs there was no chance of the day off!

Lucky him. Wish I could say the same.
