I met this Scottish man and he is simply amazing and wonderful, so interesting and kind with the sexiest accent ever, es the best. I went to scotland for the first time with him and fell in love with it. Would i be crazy to move there???!

Depends which part you’d be moving to.

Helliephant · 10/05/2026 15:48

Aberdeen!

Where do you currently live? Where does he live?

DinnerTimeCabbageSoz · 10/05/2026 15:49

I left scotland 18 years ago... I wouldnt move back to where I came from. Litterally nothing going on. Small town. An hour from a city via train.

Helliephant · 10/05/2026 15:49

We both live in Norwich

Of course there's nothing crazy about moving to Scotland, but would you just be going for him? Is the relationship at that stage? Would it work for your life?

intrepidpanda · 10/05/2026 15:52

Its no different to moving anywhere else in the UK
Type of location is more of a thing.
There is not a lot of difference lifestyle wise between living in Leeds and living in Glasgow.
There is more of a difference living in Keswick v Leeds in the same UK country

DinnerTimeCabbageSoz · 10/05/2026 15:53

Aberdeen is a LONG way from Norwich.
Suppose it depends on your personal set up. Family friends etc job
Only you can make the shout!

Helliephant · 10/05/2026 15:54

I dont want to sound like a baby but I did find it bloody cold up there. Almost unbearably uncold. It could have just been his sisters house though.

Well 50 years ago I met a Glasgow Highlander and moved to Scotland- I was North East of England born and bred.

My marriage didn't last and it took me a few years to settle into Scottish life- i'm ashamed to say when I moved here I really was ignorant about the fact I was moving to a different country because when I was brought up Scotland was actually regarded as part of England.

But now I love Scotland and regard myself as Scottish and could never move back to England

I think if you are prepared to accept and respect the Scottish culture and identity you will love it here.

StripedVase · 10/05/2026 15:57

Well, Aberdeen is very far north. You do sound as if you need to do a bit more research or spend a bit more time there before you uproot. Scotland is like England or anywhere else in that it's not just one uniform environment, different areas and towns are not at all the same as each other...

ERthree · 10/05/2026 15:57

Having lived in both the North east of Scotland and East Anglia i would choose N.E Scotland every time.

I wasnt expecting it to feel so different. To me theres something about it that feels almost Scandinavian.

I went to uni in Aberdeen and it is a lovely city. I know that Union St is a mess now, but a lot of town and city centres are like that.

The one thing you need to be aware of is how dark it is in the winter. Today sunrise is 4.59, and sunset is 21.11, giving you over 16 hours of daylight. On the shortest day, sunrise is 8.46 and sunset is 18.26 giving you 6 hours and 40 minutes of daylight. I live in the central belt of Scotland and have done for most of my life and it still makes me miserable every winter.

I moved to Scotland from east anglia and it's the best thing I ever did. If he's a good man, go for it!!

Reluctantlyhere · 10/05/2026 16:01

Inside your house is only cold if you choose that. Outside this year has been unseasonally cold even when there is blue sky and sun.

Helliephant · 10/05/2026 16:03

What is Aberdeen like to live in as opposed to visit?
Im self-employed, most of my clients are in London but I do my work from home and only have to go there two or three times a year. It would be nice to find some workspace and other people working in the arts

There are positives about Aberdeen- the countryside, the lack of people, cheap etc. There are also negatives- the cold, the massive downturn in the oil industry and the lack of jobs.

I guess it depends what you’re into, if you like climbing and hillwalking it’s great.

As someone who moved up here, it’s a long way for friends to come and visit. I moved from Nottingham and friends would come and visit, but few have bothered to come to Aberdeen!

Marquee2go · 10/05/2026 16:07

Have a look around the arts venues and spend at least a week there in November before you decide.

I found E.A not as welcoming. People in N.E Scotland are so warm and welcoming. Aberdeen is expensive for property but a few miles out is better. I felt E.A was a like living in the last century. I didn't dislike it at all but if i had to make the choice i would go north.

Reluctantlyhere · 10/05/2026 16:31

Aberdeen has seen better days so if you found it okay on a recent visit, you may be fine. The main benefit of Aberdeenshire, you don't have to live in Aberdeen city, is the clean air, countryside etc. and the relative lack of crowds and people

Plugg · 10/05/2026 16:42

There’s quite a lot of anti English bigotry around I’m ashamed to say

Universe25 · 10/05/2026 16:45

I left Scotland 20 years ago. It’s an amazing place, the scenery, the people the lifestyle BUT ….

it’s freakin’ cold all.the.time!

Even if the thermostat says 20 degrees it won’t feel like that. Especially with the wind chill coming off the North Sea in Aberdeen.

Also in the winter it’s so bloody dark, whereas in the summer you get loads of light but … midgies!

I could never go back because of the weather alone.

on another note how long have you known the boyfriend are you currently living together? Do you have a job to go to?
