I met this Scottish man and he is simply amazing and wonderful, so interesting and kind with the sexiest accent ever, es the best. I went to scotland for the first time with him and fell in love with it. Would i be crazy to move there???!

I live in Scotland and would not move to Dundee or Aberdeen.

Aberdeen used to be a thriving area of Scotland but it’s now pretty run down not to mention cold. I’ve lived in NE Scotland which is lovely but only good if you love the outdoors. Places like Elgin and Lossiemouth are beautiful but if you want things like theatre, shops etc it’s a no go.

Dundee IMO is a dump. I went to secondary there. It’s a place they keep trying to invest into but is inherently quite a poor city.

i now live in Fife which is lovely. I feel I’ve got the best of both worlds. Beautiful outdoors plus not that far from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. So if I want a shopping trip, big supermarket, go to a gig, lovely restaurants etc then they are all still options for me.

Scotland is stunning, yes it rains more and is colder but it’s a beautiful place especially if you like the outdoors.

Do you live in lovely Lochgelly?

Sadly not

So you’ve got a telly at least 🙂

Don’t do it. I moved to Aberdeen two years ago for work and it was one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made. Freezing cold, winters go on forever, dark all day in the winter and nothing to do. It is so miserable.

SpaceRaccoon · 14/05/2026 09:33

I'm so fed up. I'm also in the NE and currently sat freezing under an electric throw even with the heating on, while the rain rattles off my windows.

I'm retiring somewhere sunny, it's beautiful here but fuck it.

I am in the north of scotland and the same. My heating is on, its pouring and blooming freezing cold. Somewhere hot sounds good.

RaraRachael · 14/05/2026 12:34

@catcatcat24 I've lived here all my life and never once has it been "dark all day" in winter. Yes the days are short but that's offset by it being light from 4am until 11pm in the summer.

There are areas of England like Kent and Derbyshire that can have much more snow in winter.

Splooterer · 14/05/2026 12:36

I must say I prefer the winter in the NE of Scotland. You often get beautiful blue, clear skies. It doesn't rain there as much as some people believe.

It's cold all over the UK just now.

"nothing to do" ! What do you want to do? Please elaborate. There is so much to do. @catcatcat24

It often feels like it is though, to me anyway, that said I adore the long light nights and sunrise at 4am in summer so it evens out

@Splooterer I love your user name 😂

Aberdeengal · 14/05/2026 13:10

@catcatcat24 maybe some of us living in Aberdeen could suggest some things to you if you let us know what your interest are. I’m very active in my immediate area but know loads of people accross Aberdeen through my various interests.

Mochudubh · 14/05/2026 14:37

Mid-May is often the best time of year in Scotland, not this year though.

Note: Feels like 3.

Well you're currently in the middle of nowhere, in a city where everyone else in the nation regards the inhabitants as yokels, so you probably won't notice much of a difference after a move to Aberdeen 🙂

Nothing wrong with the fine city of Norwich. I love living in East Anglia, and moved from Bucks where I grew up. The Home Counties could be a lovely area with beautiful countryside but bloody expensive. And I found the locals weren't as friendly as Norwich, strangely enough.

highlandcoos · 14/05/2026 15:37

Can I point out that Aberdeen is further north of the equator than Moscow? It is very cold here. In winter I used to leave for work in the dark and return home in the dark.

It’s the Billy Connolly joke: at one end of Aberdeen beach mums are chucking their kids in swimmers into the sea, at the other end they’re hooking out grown men in survival suits.

😂True though!

I was just about to post saying it’s very cold - and I’m from Edinburgh!!

Today in Aberdeen, with rain and wind, the Met app says 'feels like -1C'!!!!

Gallusoldbesom · 14/05/2026 20:33

Hmm, not sure how much of this I agree with - short days in winter but very long days in summer - (like Scandinavia) the public transport in and between cities is generally very good, pretty reliable and reasonably priced, no peak train fares. NHS Scotland is no worse than England for most indicators and we have free prescriptions and free personal care. I would agree Curriculum for Excellence has not achieved anything but there’s no university tuition fees and a good apprenticeship system for <25s. Drug and alcohol issues - still awful, but pretty much the result of entrenched deprivation in peripheral estates which numerous local and national initiatives have failed to address. No country is perfect and there are many positive things about life in Scotland, not least amazing scenery, warm and friendly people and reasonable house prices - apart from Edinburgh, Perthshire and bits of Glasgow.

Plugg · 14/05/2026 22:16

As everyone has already said, Aberdeen is bloody freezing.

RaraRachael · 14/05/2026 22:18

@Gallusoldbesom Nice to hear somebody being more positive instead of the Aberdeen bashing that's gone before.

You'd think it was hundreds of miles from any civilisation, had sub zero temperatures and 24 hour darkness in winter and there's nothing to do, if you believe some people.

GardenCovent · 14/05/2026 22:21

I’m Scottish, lived here my whole life and the one place I couldnt live is Aberdeen.
It is the most depressing place, grey, miserable, cold and just not that nice.
And before anyone comes for me I went to uni in Aberdeen and it was my nearest city when I was growing up.
There are far nicer places than Aberdeen

TBF if you want to go on holiday you pay the ‘Aberdeen tax’ - either overpriced flights to Heathrow or Gatwick, or you have to drive to Edinburgh or Glasgow.

And the A90 to Edinburgh isn’t a great road to drive, and it’s a bastard of a drive to Inverness too. When you’re going over the the Glens of Foudland and the car is telling you it’s -12°C you know it’s cold.

Peony1985 · 14/05/2026 22:51

I don’t know about either place but I live SE and family members moved to Scotland.

It’s ridiculously tricky to get anywhere aside from by road. Distances are long.
Currently I live 20 mins from the ferry to France, an hour from Southampton Gatwick or Heathrow so plenty of choice with airlines and an hour from London for days out. It makes a massive difference when you want to go away.

Helliephant · 10/05/2026 15:54

I dont want to sound like a baby but I did find it bloody cold up there. Almost unbearably uncold. It could have just been his sisters house though.

I can almost guarantee you, no it's not just his sister's house. It is very, very cold in there. You'd think they insulate better there, but nope, they don't. And don't expect it only to be cold during winter either - I kid you not the Scottish summer is literally two weeks. If you're lucky, that is. And when you do get a few of those really lovely sunny days, you can bet that it's blowing a gale.

But if you don't mind the weather, then Scotland is very nice indeed. It's the people who make it!
