I lived in Aberdeen for 10 years and really liked it but its so cold at times and the wind can be brutal. We had heavy sleet today in the Highlands which I have never seen in my life. Its the coldest May I remember and my heating is on. I dont think Aberdeen will be warmer. However if your working from home make sure you join aome clubs and hobbies etc tp meet people. I found it quite easy to make friends there. House prices are really affordable now to

Definitely very cold in Aberdeen this May! There was hail a few days ago. Yesterday the weather was: sunny but windy then heavy cold rain then sunny then heavy rain then sunny again. Bonkers weather this year.

You are a bunch of misery guts aren’t you?! Aberdeen, like all cities, has its issues. But we have amazing outdoor spaces (Duthie park, the botanic gardens), stunning architecture including the largest granite building in Europe. The top end of union street is becoming very foodie with nice places to eat. We have a beautiful theatre, a well renovated music hall. Outside the city you head west to royal deeside, north west to Inverurie and Huntly. Or north to Peterhead. All have stunning scenery, lots to do and good places to eat. There are so many farmers markets and craft fairs too. I think it’s a great place to live. And only soft southerners think it’s cold 😂

Far ye fae quine?

SabrinaThwaite · 13/05/2026 14:25

I always thought May was the best month for weather - primary school sports day was always in June and it was often postponed / cancelled due to rubbish weather.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 13/05/2026 14:29

The winter is long and dark but the summers are lighter.

The only thing I really miss is good bakery bread. Even bakeries don't do nice bread and focus on rolls. God I miss Wenzels.

RaraRachael · 13/05/2026 14:32

I'm a little further west than Aberdeen and one year we never got to have a sports day as every day in June was bad.

I think it was Aboyne one year in either May or June it was 27 degrees one day and 3 degrees the next.

It's been a beautiful morning here, so warm I didn't need a coat and got loads of washing dried. Now it's raining and cold 🙄

Theyreeatingthedogs · 13/05/2026 14:52

I'm originally from Aberdeen but left 30+ years ago. If I had to go back to the area I'd want to live on Deeside, probably Banchory.

It normally is this year is just like winter though. I dug out my winter jacket and put on my heating again the other day.

Waitingfordoggo · 13/05/2026 18:03

To be fair re cold temperatures right now- I think that’s nationwide. I’m on the English south coast and it’s bastard freezing. We’ve had a few proper spring days, but overall it’s much colder than average for May.

NosnowontheScottishhills · 13/05/2026 21:08

Plugg · 10/05/2026 16:42

There’s quite a lot of anti English bigotry around I’m ashamed to say

I moved to Scotland from England 5 years ago and have never encountered any “English bigotry”. One of my DCs has live here for 9 years he would say the same.
Generally Scots are curious about where you’re from but in a friendly way.
I love it here and nothing would get me to move back to England; stunning scenery, friendly people, glorious peace and quiet. Although I do agree short dark days in the winter and if you live on the west side a lot of rain the weather is more sunny in the north east but it is cold. But the up side of dark winter days are glorious long summer days.

ReallyOtter · 13/05/2026 23:38

You have gone out how long with this man? And seen Aberdeen one day in May? And want to move?
Do you make many impulsive decisions? Do you have a good social network where you are? This is worrying.

SlayTheJAway · 14/05/2026 00:46

Why is it worrying? What’s wrong with a free adult woman taking a punt on a new adventure in life?

Gingerkittykat · 14/05/2026 03:49

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 10/05/2026 23:31

@gingerkittykatI live in central England and it’s dark by 4pm in the winter… are you sure you’ve got the times right there?

Edited

I got it wrong, another poster pointed out that sunset is 15.36.

I hate Scottish winters!

highlandcoos · 14/05/2026 06:05

I'm from Aberdeen. There are no midgies in Aberdeen! There are, however, seagulls.

The midge bites on my leg after weeding will make me disagree with you. I live at the outer edge of Aberdeen and my garden has 200 feet of hawthorn hedge that I can't go near in summer. I've seen clouds of midges around it. I usually wear an anti-midge hat and long sleeves for gardening, but wasn't expecting them to be out this early in the year.

Re heating costs. I love the cold and never have heating on in my bedroom. I only have oil heating and at its most expensive, paid £3.2k for a tank of oil. I use 1.5 tanks a year, and I live alone. Yesterday was 7C and hailing so I was back in my winter jacket, and I've seen snow in June.

I do love living here though. Foxes, deer and pheasants visit my garden, and the pigeons are so fat, I'm surprised they can even fly. I agree that the blooming seagulls are now moving inland. My friend in Westhills has a colony in her street and with the chicks about, you need an umbrella to ward off the parental attacks, just walking to your car.

I threatened to get my big coat back out yesterday. It's absolutely wrong being this cold and wet/windy at this time of year ☹️

Cheesipuff · 14/05/2026 06:15

It is cold - need jackets with hoods. I moved Aberdeen to the Home Counties and bought my first smart raincoat and umbrella. DCs in jackets all year -not much use for shorts or dresses

Dearg · 14/05/2026 06:26

Ignore the nay-sayers, Aberdeen and Shire can be lovely. We get more sunshine on average than Edinburgh or Dundee; less rain than Glasgow and the west; Aboyne is often the hottest place in Scotland in summer ( and Braemar often the coldest in winter!) .

Both the city and the shire are used to all nationalities moving in and out due to the oil industry.

The taxes are higher and public services are not great, but we are clinging on to our libraries, the theatre and Art Gallery in the city are both busy and vibrant, and there’s a definite uptick in food culture.

I visited Gt Yarmouth many times when I worked in the oil industry and Loganair still do flights to Norwich from Dyce.

Come and give us a try !

Elsbells22 · 14/05/2026 06:30

Aberdeen is a great city, it’s small, easy to get around and safe.
Flights to London are numerous times a day into most London airports.
Lots of green spaces, my favourite being Duthie Park.
It’s a buyers market right now as house prices have dropped significantly.
Yes winters are long and cold but I’ve never owned more than a good winter jacket and some lined wellie boots.
If you drive great no issues, living in the city also easily navigated by bus. Quite different if moving to the shire as public transport is more limited.
Some absolutely stunning beaches around, great restaurants and I’d say a really lovely city to live in.
Welcome to Aberdeen!

Girlintheframe · 14/05/2026 07:55

I live in Scotland and would not move to Dundee or Aberdeen.

Aberdeen used to be a thriving area of Scotland but it’s now pretty run down not to mention cold. I’ve lived in NE Scotland which is lovely but only good if you love the outdoors. Places like Elgin and Lossiemouth are beautiful but if you want things like theatre, shops etc it’s a no go.

Dundee IMO is a dump. I went to secondary there. It’s a place they keep trying to invest into but is inherently quite a poor city.

i now live in Fife which is lovely. I feel I’ve got the best of both worlds. Beautiful outdoors plus not that far from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. So if I want a shopping trip, big supermarket, go to a gig, lovely restaurants etc then they are all still options for me.

Scotland is stunning, yes it rains more and is colder but it’s a beautiful place especially if you like the outdoors.

jimbort · 14/05/2026 08:08

Reluctantlyhere · 10/05/2026 17:23

Not really an issue in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire as there are a lot of non Scots born people around lol.

Agree. There’s loads of people from different places here. I think the worst thing is the cold and dark in the winter. Last winter there were like 21 days where there was no sun 😂 probably if you dislike the cold then you should get a new build house as that is warmer.

AgnesX · 14/05/2026 08:17

Aberdeen is the coldest city I've ever been in if that helps. Sunnier than the west coast though.

The real question is would you want to be there if it wasn't for your boyfriend.

andana · 14/05/2026 08:29

How about Perthshire? Not a bad distance to travel to see family in Aberdeen or spend time in Glasgow or Edinburgh when you need a change of scene or a bigger city? Summers tend to be a bit sunnier and warmer than on the east coast.

Every city has areas of deprivation and areas of wealth.
Aberdeen is no more run down than other comparative cities.
You live in Fife now and I agree it is beautiful but some areas of Fife are the poorest in Scotland, I know this myself as lived in Fife for 18 years. There’s far more deprivation in Fife than Aberdeen but if you don’t leave the east Neuk guess you’d never know that.
Dont understand the whole Scottish mentality of Aberdeen is a dump… especially when you don’t live there.

Oh absolutely I totally agree! Fife like all places has areas of deprivation, just like anywhere else. I think it’s maybe because I remember Aberdeen in its hay day when there was still lots of money flowing into the city. Sadly it’s changed a lot since those days. I used to visit often as lived in Lossiemouth then again when DH was training for off shore. Going back now it is not the city it used to be.

Its horrible I have never seen such a cold May

I'm so fed up. I'm also in the NE and currently sat freezing under an electric throw even with the heating on, while the rain rattles off my windows.

I'm retiring somewhere sunny, it's beautiful here but fuck it.
