Exam results 2024

Thought I'd get started on the exam results thread as we have a month to go!
I think, as a parent, I'm more nervous about this year (Highers) than last year (N5) as the Higher results will influence university applications.
DD tells me she's not thinking about her exams, but then she throws into conversation how 'super smart' her friends are and how they will probably get As, and also has asked me if our postcode is eligible for widening access (it isn't) so it appears to me that she IS thinking / worrying about her results.
We do have a holiday coming up which will hopefully help us all relax.
How are other kids doing?

DDs school only share the banding if you ask specific teachers. some are happy to tell you and others aren't. I already know which teachers won't tell her.

Similar at my son's school.

School should share this and marks for each paper if you didn’t get what you hoped for - how else can you assess whether to put in an appeal?

No-one would be doing anything about re-marks before the kids were back anyway. Appeals aren't a thing anymore - you send off evidence in the case of an exceptional circumstance (and this has already been done), or you can request a re-mark of the exam paper (and coursework component) if your award is substantially different to expected. You cannot ask for a remark if your estimated grade was a 3, for example, and you were awarded a 4.

Me too! Butterflies in the stomach. DD says she doesn't care but I can tell she does really. Setting the alarm for 7:30 so I can have a cup of tea and get a bit mentally settled before the text arrives.

YouBelongWithMe · 05/08/2024 22:37

I've just done the exact same thing. Will hear how DS got on and then head into work to find out what the results look like across my dept. I'll need a stiff gin by evening!

2chocolateoranges · 05/08/2024 22:42

Good luck to all your teens, mine are both older but remember the pre results day nerves as a parent well.

Seaside1234 · 05/08/2024 22:45

I completely forgot about tomorrow until quite late today! DS doing Nat 5s, so my first experience of result day as a parent. Don't think it will change his Higher plans unless English grade much worse than expected. Still nervous though! He doesn't think he's signed up for the text service, so we'll be waiting on a letter...

Good luck to all your young folk!

DD just warned me that there will be tears in the morning. I hope she’s wrong, but I’ve told her that it’s not the end of the world. There are plenty of other opportunities and ways to get where she wants to go. And I mean that!

Totally agree, always remember my dds English teacher told her she had failed higher English in 5th year and resat it in 6th year and passed.

it took me to 43 to go to college for a qualification and I’m now doing a job I love, my friend started uni last year at the age of 26.

We don’t all take the quick route of A to B , some people have different diversions in their routes but still end up at the same place.

Absolutely @theferry . Both my older boys took different routes and are doing very well for themselves now. Dnephew, who did well academically, decided not to go to university but to do an apprenticeship and had started his own business and bought a flat before he was 25. Ds3 has 4 unconditional uni places waiting for him, but has been offered an apprenticeship and thinks that's what he's going to do. As long as they are safe and fairly happy, I'm happy.

Good luck to everyone.

Tension mounting here too ..we are waiting for Higher results . At least DD registered for the text this year. Last year she forgot and we were stalking the postman at lunchtime 😂😂

Good luck to everyone

Bluepeach · 06/08/2024 06:40

If you have signed up for alerts you get an email as well as a text, is that right? We are abroad and my daughter has misplaced (lost!) her Scottish sim!

GetDownkeith · 06/08/2024 06:40

I’ve been awake a while am nervous. I’m now at the worrying about the worst stage. David a very quiet person and I’m worried he won’t be honest about how he feels if it doesn’t go his way. He’s been very what will be about it but I know he will be devastated.
it’s going to be a long hour and a half.

motheronthedancefloor · 06/08/2024 06:48

What time do the grade boundaries appear on the sqa website?

Just out of interest, why would someone want to see the grade boundaries?

SandyIrving · 06/08/2024 06:54

@theferry my 3 are in their 20s and there is an inverse relationship between school passes and career success. My one with least highers has the best paying job.

birdsoeking · 06/08/2024 06:57

waiting here. DS has had a massive struggle all of school so we are a mix of Nat 4 and Nat 5. He’s off to college in September so he’s pretty laid back at the moment. Likely have to wake him to get the text as we were just back from holiday late last night. Good luck everyone.

ChocoChocoLatte · 06/08/2024 07:00

Waiting for two here also - good luck everyone, this part is worse for the parents lol

HigherUp · 06/08/2024 07:02

Well I’ve managed to sleep until about 10 minutes ago at 6.45 - not bad - about 5 hrs. Am totally unsure of what the next couple of hours will bring - but it’ll bring something and life will move forward a few squares and we’ll deal with it whatever it is. 2nd time for us waiting on Highers (hi @Aurea, I remember you from the last time - I’ve namechanged though - Child No 1 now happily about to enter 3rd year at Uni 😊)

Good luck everyone!!

Bluepeach · 06/08/2024 06:54

Just out of interest, why would someone want to see the grade boundaries?

Lots of reasons depending onm the person - they may want to appeal if their percentage was 'just' below a certain grade, they may seek reassurance from a grade boundary being lowered, that they weren't the only person who found a certain exam hard, or may be just curious! years ago (I'm ancient) my DF actually worked for the sqa so interested to know how things have changed.

Edited to add: DD has just come downstairs for cereal. "don't talk to me" was the only thing she said.

Waiting for ds' Highers results. I was fairly relaxed but I'm starting to feel a bit nervous now. ds is still hiding in his room.
