In Scotland, is it more

Roo ree
Roo uh ree
Rory (googling says this but I don’t think it is?)
Something else?

Thanks!

I thought it was Rory but I could be wrong!

muddyford · 23/06/2024 08:08

Rory.

Toooldforthis36 · 23/06/2024 08:09

Rory which is the anglicised version. Proper Gaelic spelling is Ruaridh though.

daveyfish · 23/06/2024 08:10

Central belt Scotland, I hear rooree as much as Rory

BigBoysDontCry · 23/06/2024 08:12

Most I know, with various spellings, say Rooree, occasionally a Roo ah ree.

The only ones pronounced Rory spell it like that.

I'm not saying that's technically correct, just what I've come across.

dementedpixie · 23/06/2024 08:18

I'd say Rooree

HollyKnight · 23/06/2024 08:20

Roe-ree

Missymarple · 23/06/2024 08:22

Live in the Highlands, have only ever heard that spelling pronounced Roo-ree.

Koko83 · 23/06/2024 08:23

I thought Roo-ree

Sierra26 · 23/06/2024 08:28

Only ever heard Roo-ree from other scots when spelled that way

Rory (Roe-ree) is a deliberately different name IMO

Springwatch123 · 23/06/2024 08:29

Raw - Ry
Roor - Ry

something like these

Dearg · 23/06/2024 08:30

I would say Roo-ree. West Aberdeenshire here.

AgnesX · 23/06/2024 08:32

Ruh-ree. Love the Gaelic version.

YouAreAllMySymmetry · 23/06/2024 08:33

Rooree.

Only Rory is pronounced roary.

Mrsjayy · 23/06/2024 08:36

You can have both but I think with the Ruridh spelling it's roo ri.

BrokenWing · 23/06/2024 08:37

Ruari (Irish) and Ruairidh (Scottish) are very similar.

Ruari I would pronounce with a slightly softer Roo-ree instead of Rory. Personally prefer the Rory sound.

Mrsjayy · 23/06/2024 08:39

I prefer Rory .

junebirthdaygirl · 23/06/2024 08:39

In lreland its the lrish for Rory and pronounced Roo.ree

Alwaysthesun24 · 23/06/2024 08:39

Ruah-rih is how I'd pronounce it as a Scottish person.
Roo-ree is common too.
Rory is a completely different name.

I think you are right they are different names.

JaninaDuszejko · 23/06/2024 08:47

Roo-ree

GrandShow · 23/06/2024 08:48

Central Scotland
The ones I know are pronounced
Roo-ray

RenaissanceBaby · 23/06/2024 08:49

Definitely not Rory. The correct pronunciation is “Roo-ree”. There are a few ways to spell it but.

RenaissanceBaby · 23/06/2024 08:49

…. But i believe they are all pronounced the same.
