In Scotland, is it more

Roo ree
Roo uh ree
Rory (googling says this but I don’t think it is?)
Something else?

Thanks!

Rooray here in West Lothian. Have those saying it’s Rory ever met a Ruaridh!?

Cheeesus · 23/06/2024 09:13

Mrsjayy · 23/06/2024 08:39

I prefer Rory .

Ha yeah me too as I know how to pronounce it!
I don’t think I can ask this one to change his name though.

Thanks everyone, based on other people and how they say his name it does seem that Roo ree is right, but I was just checking there shouldn’t be a tiny third syllable in the middle. I wasn’t sure I was hearing it totally right.

Rooahree or Rooree are both acceptable. Could you ask the person?

Misthios · 23/06/2024 09:44

I have a Rory (spelled and pronounced that way) and know several others called Ruari, Ruaraidh, Ruairidh... It varies. Some are roo-a-ree, others are just ro-ri.

Personally we went for the Rory spelling for simplicity and because we were not living in Scotland when he was born. People still thought we'd called him Roy, and asked whether Rory was a girls' name.

MillsAndBalloons · 23/06/2024 09:44

I'm in East Scotland, there's a Ruari at my daughter's nursery and it's pronounced RooRay

I think there can be a tiny 'uh' sound in the middle, it doesn't matter much either way.

MadeForThis · 23/06/2024 09:58

Rur ee

Rur to rhyme with cure

IsadoraQuagmire · 23/06/2024 10:14

I know one, pronounced Rory.

starofwonder · 23/06/2024 11:04

I have a Ruairidh - he reminds people that it's 'Ruairidh to rhyme with fury not Rory to rhyme with story'.

longdistanceclaraclara · 23/06/2024 11:15

Rooree for the one I know

There often is a tiny third syllable in the middle, there is when I say it and it is common here. I think it is an accent thing.

There is a small syllable in the middle. It's not emphasised and is quite often skipped over in speech so lots of people don't really say it.
But it's not wrong, more correct really.

Thanks. I think that actually works better in my head and makes it easier to say. It’s a very subtle difference.

I'd say Roory. Rory is Rory. Rhuaridh is Roo-uh-ry.

Groovee · 23/06/2024 18:45

Rooo ree is more the Rhuaridh pronunciation.

Rory is just Rory.

Scottishgirl85 · 23/06/2024 18:48

We have a Ruaridh. Pronounced Roo-ry. We're in SE England and people cope remarkably well with it! Most think it's Rory if they see it written down before hearing it, once corrected it's easy for them.

snoopyfanaccountant · 23/06/2024 20:54

I know several people named Ruaridh and they pronounce their name as rooray.

Careerdecisions · 23/06/2024 22:09

I know two Ruaridh’s, one is pronounced Rory and the other Rooray.

weareallqueens · 23/06/2024 22:54

Roo-a-ray. Or in Gaelic Roo-a-they. Spelling Ruairidh. Ruairi is the anglicisation of Ruairidh, translation of Roderick.

Spottyhousecoat · 23/06/2024 23:21

I say rooray with emphasis on the r's idh should be pronounced y not ee!

Funnywonder · 23/06/2024 23:38

DS2 has a Ruari in his class who joined from Scotland a couple of years ago (we're in NI) and he pronounces it Roor-ee.

DinnaeFashYersel · 23/06/2024 23:40

Rooree and roll your rrrrrs

Hiddendoor · 24/06/2024 00:14

Rooo-ray or Roo-ree. Sometimes there's almost a little.pause or an i in the middle to make it Roo-ih-ray but depends in how im told they pronounce it.

I love the name, also love Rory too. But I can't pronounce my Rs so it wasn't to be.

Funnywonder · 24/06/2024 00:34

That's exactly how I say it. It's subtle but it's there.
