I loathe the Scottish Government

I loathe the Scottish Government. I want to see the SNP/Green Party coalition roast in hell! They can take any MSP who voted for the Gender Reform Bill or the Hate Crime Laws with them. Is it now a hate crime for a Scottish Woman to say that?

The SNP are blinded by hatred (hatred for the English, let's be honest). Their focus is not on Scotland but on separation. It isn't just an obsession with independence. It's an obsession with identity – with making Scotland as distinct and separate from the rest of the UK as they can. A government's priority should be to govern efficiently. The SNP's priority is to disentangle Scotland from the UK. In other words, to remove all traces of 'Britishness', no matter what the cost.

You see it in all areas of government. The creation of 'Police Scotland', for example, had nothing to do with efficiency. A reasonably efficient police service was replaced with a more expensive and less efficient one in the name of ideology. They wanted a distinct and separate force, with Gaelic on the side of every police car (paid for by the taxpayer, of course). The same thing has happened in all areas of government, and the result has been decline – worse housing, worse education, worse transportation, a worse health service, etc.

It’s so weird seeing this. Literally every public service has a saltire or the word Scotland emblazoned on it. Feels really parochial and a bit petty. Even the fabric on train seats!

what else I’ve noticed is the nannying - as soon as you cross the border into Scotland on the motorway there are relentless safety messages ‘don’t take drugs and drive’ ‘don’t drive tired’ ‘drive safely’ ‘observe speed limit’ ‘- whilst you do see this in England they aren’t quite so frequent - or so patronising frankly. Feels a bit OTT.

Ironically, as a "yes" voter 10 years ago, wild horses on acid could not convince me to ever support the snp or the severing of ties with the UK again.

I was stupid and trusted those who have proved categorically to be unworthy of that trust.

Thankfully many other people were less gullible, and if it includes you - thank you.

Fraggamama · 07/05/2024 11:09

@CocoapuffPuff I think the Brexit shit show has shown everyone that we can't trust all the "everything will be so much better if we make this (really significant irreversible) change."

People want the benefits demonstrated to them in a tangible way first all before they are prepared to vote for something irreversible. The "Take control" and "it can't be as bad as the Tories" rhetoric is not good enough

CocoapuffPuff · 07/05/2024 12:06

Broken trust. Story of our lives, really.

To add to this - I was, and still am, annoyed by the appropriation of the saltire by the SNP/pro-Indy lot. The whole rhetoric was "We love Scotland more than ANYONE else, and if you don't want independence, you don't love Scotland at all, so we get the saltire". The concept that we were voting against independence because we love Scotland and want the best for the country and the people was completely beyond their comprehension. We were portrayed as being disloyal to the country we live in and love, and that still infuriates me.

Sturgeon's yes-man during the pandemic who never had an original thought in his life

Me too. My eldest is 21 - I saw an old photo of him when he was about 4 or 5 (so 2007/8 ish) and he was wearing a t-shirt saying Scotland and with an image of a saltire.

There is NO WAY I would wear something like that now, or put a child in it.

Toooldforthis36 · 07/05/2024 14:53

An ACTUAL MSP vs a properly qualified professional.

I suppose we should be thankful than Emma Harper ditched the fake Scoats dialect for this at least. For ref, this is the woman who doesn’t foresee currency issues in an independent Scotland with a different currency because she “was able to use plastic without a problem, on holiday in Mexico”

I shit you not.

So it’s in the run up to the next Scottish election in 2026, what do you want to hear from the opposition parties? Me:

Binning all GRA / hate crime legislation once and for all.

Charges to be brought against whoever decided to award the ferries contract to Ferguson Marine.

A promise to only spend money on devolved issues. No overseas spending, no pretend embassies, no independence studies / ministers etc.

Address violence in schools. My kids are scared to go to school due to constant unrest. The disruptive kids need to be removed.

An aligned DRS with rUK. Let’s all get recycling!

What else?

Happy with all that, I'll add;

Return the voting age to 18 with a requirement that you must be at least 25 before holding public office. Have junior assemblies to allow young people appropriate influence.

Sort out university entrance and allow those who are willing to borrow the money for fees the ability to apply without being restricted to "free" places. This also opens up the allocated free places to those who need them most.

Devolve council matters back to local councils who know what they need most.

Have a 2nd chamber

Concentrate on pulling education up for all instead of closing a gap by reducing the achievements at the top.

Have more cross chamber working.

Listen to experts.

JennyLake · 07/05/2024 17:03

Oh lord no second chamber! Lady Sturgeon?
just another ££££ opportunity for the retired MSPs
I see the benefit of a second chamber in principle…but we have demonstrated a complete inability to govern ….i don’t trust Scotland to do it properly

Misthios · 07/05/2024 17:31

tax the same as rUk

Timetodownsize · 07/05/2024 17:59

Well we could completely scrap devolution and just use the system we already have? 😁We need something but that doesn't mean to say it needs to replicate the Lords as such.

Fraggamama · 07/05/2024 18:09

No more sticking plasters:
Sort out the drugs deaths by tackling the root of the problem - poverty and lack of opportunity.
Lift families permanently out of poverty instead of an extra tenner a week by providing quality education and training leading to quality, secure jobs

I agree with most of this, but I’m a bit sceptical about the “experts” after the lockdown experience and the self id fiasco. The so called “ experts” weren’t so expert after all.

We need a second chamber, we saw that after the way the idiot laws were bulldozed through, we need a proper system of checks and balances.

I've entirely lost any sort of confidence in the Scottish Government and Parliament as a whole. With a (very few) exceptions, the vast majority of our elected representatives, across all parties, appear to be craven fools, easily swayed by the lobbying of groups with an agenda and our entire county's major institutions seem particularly susceptible to institutional capture and are unable of making any sound legislation or policies. The named person debacle, the Hate Crime bullshite, the opposition to the six words amendment, the GRR bill, the recycling scheme, the ferries.... you could go on and on. There's no second chamber or seemingly any checks on shite legislation being pushed through, aside from section 35.

I used to be proud of Scotland. Now, I am not just not proud but actively distrustful of most of our major institutions.

Totally agree

Yeah true. I mean proper experts rather than their own paid/cherry picked experts. Hugh Pennington wouldn't have bought all that shit but he wasn't snp so... 🤷

Also, independence could almost have worked while we were still in the EU if Scotland had been accepted into the EU quickly and the rest of the UK had stayed in. No trade difficulties. Now it would be a nightmare as it would require a border.

But in the same way that bojo said a hard border wouldn’t be needed (100% lie) their gullible, bovine-headed idiot voters would believe this when the SNP say it too.

PrimalLass · 07/05/2024 20:16

There's surely no way we could avoid a hard border unless they tried to use the Windsor Framework rules - but it's a different political situation.
