Surely this will cant happen. How do they expect the average person to be able to afford to install a heat pump in their home. Honestly I despair!
Scots could be banned from selling homes without heat pumps (agcc.co.uk)

The telegraph article is behind a paywall, can anyone access and paste it?

Patrick Harvie rearing his ugly head again. He hasn't a clue. We live in the sticks, and have LPG gas as we are off the grid, had a new boiler three years ago. Last year we put solar panels in, and asked the surveyor about heat pumps. He said our 250 year old stone cottage is not suitable. There are a lot of similar properties in Scotland, what are we supposed to do. This will go the way of the DRS and Marine bills. Idiot.

Stuckathomeagain · 24/07/2023 11:23

Could the Green Party stop for just one minute and try engaging their one tiny brain cell for just one minute before opening their mouth? There’s a reason why we don’t have heat pumps - they are wholly inappropriate for scotlands housing stock.

Karatema · 24/07/2023 12:07

My son has a heat pump, encouraged to have one by the Scottish government. It now needs servicing and the company which installed don't want to come out to him and the only other engineer is 60 miles away and wants his hourly rate from the time he leaves home plus travelling costs! It's a joke 😡

Cosmosforbreakfast · 24/07/2023 18:12

How many of the SNP have fingers in Heat Pump Manufacturing pies?

ProseccoOnTap · 24/07/2023 21:40

Typical Patrick Harvey & Greens.

I hope he is never elected again.

I had to replace by boiler 2 years ago & was considering one, but it wasn't practical in a block of flats.

GenieGenealogy · 24/07/2023 21:45

There are only 17,000 properties in Scotland with a heat pump. Harvie is a wee numpty.

DismantledKing · 24/07/2023 21:47

How those arseholes ended up anywhere near government is beyond me

herewego9 · 24/07/2023 21:52

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if these nutcases managed to get this through.

Because they have brainwashed people into believing that Scotland will be some sort of Uptopia if we get 'Independence'.

We have serious problems with homelessness, unemployment, drugs, crime, violence towards women, the state of the roads and council properties but hey ho, let's try drive people further towards poverty with a mandatory heat pump. Scotland goes further and further downhill everyday.

JobMatch3000 · 24/07/2023 22:06

I was looking at the Government grants to install solar panels. You now can't get a grant unless you install a heat pump at the same time.

My combi boiler is 5 years old and in perfect nick, I can program it to turn on/off when I want and I have no intention to move to heat pump heating!

SirChenjins · 24/07/2023 22:09

Not a hope in hell - this will go the same way as the rest of the ‘bright’ ideas from the perennially dim Greens. Of all the things they could be focusing on this is what they come up with. FFS.

mrsmacmc · 24/07/2023 22:16

🤦‍♀️ 😶 but not surprised they don't live in the real world 🙄

Skyellaskerry · 24/07/2023 22:24

As others have said, as wholly inappropriate in a lot of Scottish houses.

Just a pity that incorporating environmentally efficient systems wasn’t incorporated into planning requirements for new builds, such a wasted opportunity, and would have balanced things out.

DuesToTheDirt · 24/07/2023 22:25

Ridiculous. We don't have double-glazing, and without having it already installed we couldn't get someone to come out and give us a quote for a heat pump.

So if we needed to sell, we'd need to get double-glazing. Plus a heat pump. But maybe even with double-glazing, the heat pump people would turn us down for some reason.

Madness.

AuditAngel · 24/07/2023 22:28

They are not just inappropriate in Scottish housing stock. DH was keen on the idea until he did his homework.

hivetoo · 24/07/2023 22:28

@Cosmosforbreakfast let's also put cycle lanes everywhere which will remain largely unused and cause further congestion on roads. Oh and let's make a LEZ and further destroy the city centre.

I just have no words 🫠

gawditswindy · 24/07/2023 22:49

I know a few people with heat pumps (no mains gas). Most of them installed oil heating shortly after. The heat pumps were inadequate.

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/07/2023 22:59

This is what happens when people keep voting SNP and Green.

ProseccoOnTap · 25/07/2023 06:43

How long till the next election? I think support for the SNP has significantly reduced.

GenieGenealogy · 25/07/2023 08:22

And let's not forget that Patrick Harvie, Lorna Slater and the rest of the Green lunatic fringe are only having their voices heard because the SNP need them to make a majority in parliament. If the SNP take a kicking at the polls (here's hoping) the Greens will slide back into the obscurity and student politics where they belong.

cloudsintheceiling · 25/07/2023 08:58

I looked into this and apparently they run at around 40c whilst GCH runs at around 60c and only really work well in New build very insulated houses. My (old, craply insulated house) is already fucking freezing in winter with GCH, I dread to think what it would be like with a heat pump.

Absolutely agree. I was driving somewhere recently that had converted part of the pavement to a cycle lane - pedestrians were being funnelled down one narrow strip while the wider cycle lane was completely empty. Completely bonkers.

herewego9 · 25/07/2023 12:12

@SirChenjins they've installed a cycle lane along great western road than runs along the same line as the cycle lane at the canal.

StillWantingADog · 25/07/2023 12:21

(I’m in England)
we have recently had a heat pump installed. It’s brilliant but a. We had the money to pay for it and b. Our house is only 10 years old so suitable

I think governments are right to strongly encourage but first things first, enough engineers need to be trained up to install and service them. Then insist that they are put in all newbuilds. THEN start the retrofit but understand that a good many homes will never be suitable and many families will never be able to do it without significant expense - if serious about it it needs to be heavily subsidised.

if you have the right kind of home though it’s great. If anyone has one that is rubbish it will more than likely be not installed correctly and/or installed in a house not sufficiently well insulated. The cooler weather in Scotland is not an excuse- have friends above the arctic circle in Norway who’ve had toasty homes via a heat pump since the 1990s.
