Surely this will cant happen. How do they expect the average person to be able to afford to install a heat pump in their home. Honestly I despair!
Scots could be banned from selling homes without heat pumps (agcc.co.uk)

The telegraph article is behind a paywall, can anyone access and paste it?

can heat pumps work in tenements? ESP tenements in conservation zones that mean you can’t replace the windows unless you win the lottery?

SirChenjins · 25/07/2023 13:02

Oh @Menopants - details schmetails....the Greens and the SNP don't care about how things will actually work in practice. It's only when these things are pointed out to them do they stop and think, before scuttling back into their rooms at Holyrood to come up with their next hare-brained scheme.

Flossieflamingo · 25/07/2023 13:52

We can barely heat our stone Victorian house to an acceptable temperature with GCH and stoves. Tried lowering temp to reduce gas consumption last year and ended up with mould problems. Another idiotic idea from the Greens!

RudsyFarmer · 25/07/2023 13:54

My neighbours heat pump not only doesn’t sufficiently heat their house nor their hot water but also I’ve never seen the service engineer out so much in any properties on the street. Pretty much once a month minimum across winter fucking about with it.

MNetcurtains · 25/07/2023 14:06

AuditAngel · 24/07/2023 22:28

They are not just inappropriate in Scottish housing stock. DH was keen on the idea until he did his homework.

This. Our house was built in the 1930s (we're in the SE) and when we had a plumber in for something unrelated, I asked him about heat pumps. He stated that they were really only useful in new builds (increased insulation/double or triple glazing etc) and completely unworkable in older preperties.

No, absolutely not.

How those arseholes ended up anywhere near government is beyond me

Because even idiots get to vote.

Seeingadistance · 25/07/2023 14:10

Last time I had my gas boiler serviced, the engineer told me that he has installed heat pumps in two houses locally, despite advising the people against them. They insisted, he installed them, and within a few months he was back to install traditional gas boilers as heat pumps just not suitable for those, older, houses.

Lorrries · 26/07/2023 00:18

There's a massive shortage of plumbers. Good luck getting a plumber to install a heat pump in a house if you need to move quickly or if the owner dies and their children need to sell the property.

standys · 26/07/2023 00:28

I am sure there must be some overarching UK Law which would stop them doing this...surely? The right to buy and sell property in a democracy? Well the lawyers would get rich as usual whilst people/UK Government were trying to get common sense restored.

Harrythehappypig · 26/07/2023 00:37

I was trying to work out what PH’s environmental background was the other day. As far as I could see he’d worked in D&I but I couldn’t see any environmental sustainability - have I missed something? Lorna Slater and Maggie Chapman definitely have degrees/work background based around sustainability.

justasking111 · 26/07/2023 00:42

GenieGenealogy · 25/07/2023 08:22

And let's not forget that Patrick Harvie, Lorna Slater and the rest of the Green lunatic fringe are only having their voices heard because the SNP need them to make a majority in parliament. If the SNP take a kicking at the polls (here's hoping) the Greens will slide back into the obscurity and student politics where they belong.

We're looking at the death throes of the SNP I suspect.

Sugarfree23 · 26/07/2023 00:45

So many pie in the sky ideas, no thoughts that people are already struggling to pay the bills.
Massive increases in council tax.
People are being forced to upgrade cars.

They seem to think if you've got a bought house your rolling in it. When really thousands of people are barely keeping their heads above water.

LizzieMacQueen · 26/07/2023 04:53

I'm not saying it's in any way comparable but they did bring in the law on smoke alarms.

Hasn't stopped non compliant houses being sold. Just a disclaimer on the house listing. I'm taking that knowledge from reading house descriptions on Rightmove 😁

Stuckathomeagain · 26/07/2023 06:53

What annoys me is what a genuinely environmentally conscious party ought to be doing is admitting heat pumps will not work in our current housing stock and put more effort into finding realistic alternatives. Instead they choose to gaslight the public into thinking they will work - when they won’t.

if I spent £20k for a new heating system which wouldn’t heat my draughty tenement over 10 degrees in winter and heat the water over 20 degrees I’d be very pissed off indeed.

BadgerFacedCoo · 26/07/2023 07:01

Patrick Harvie is what we in Scotland call a moon howler.

They made it illegal not to have the linked smoke detectors, they didn't make it illegal to sell a property without them.

They are making noises about making it illegal to sell without heatpumps.

They need to operate carrot not stick. Ie provide incentives for people to change. Infact if the money stacked up people would change.

But really a tiny nation like Scotland has practically zero effect on global warming. Nothing we do is going to make a difference while China is continuing to pump out billions of CO2.

We need to stop buying stuff. And replacing stuff for the hell of it.

ProseccoOnTap · 26/07/2023 07:22

He just doesn't think the consequences through.

He once had a bad landlord, so has introduced draconian anti-landlord legislation- now renting is an absolute nightmare & LL's are selling up - no one wins there.

Sugarfree23 · 26/07/2023 07:30

It's almost like SNP are trying to throw the next election.
How much more can they fuck up between now and then?

They can do what they want. People will vote for them regardless. And people who don't think the SNP are left-wing enough will vote green. Regardless.

Sugarfree23 · 26/07/2023 07:53

Not when it comes to hitting them in the pocket. And they are stuck in their house, unable to sell without a heat pump and unable to afford to buy one.

Loan sharks paradise

Waitwhat23 · 26/07/2023 08:30

Heat pumps aren't suitable for tenanments, rural properties, badly insulated homes etc etc etc.

www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/politics/scottish-politics/5232478/green-energy-homes-rural/

Social housing isn't suitable for heat pumps due to systemic under maintenance of the properties -

www.sundaypost.com/fp/climate-heat-pumps/

And that absolute fud, Patrick Harvie, still has a gas boiler himself.

I practically grind my teeth into dust on hearing/seeing any of the utter incompetents from the Scottish Greens.

Calmdown14 · 26/07/2023 08:32

The equipment is massive. I know someone with one in a new build and the room that houses all this stuff is bigger than my kitchen.

The people fitting them told them retrofitting is a nightmare in all but a few suitable houses.

I think all new builds should incorporate solar or heat pumps (or both if suitable i.e face right direction) but older housing stock isn't the place for this. There are lots of other measures around insulation and efficiency that can be done first but again one size fits all doesn't work with this.

Making it illegal to sell a property with a gas boiler makes the entire tenement housing stock unsellable. Good luck with that one. As someone said up thread, I wish the Greens would admit that heat pumps are a non-starter in most Scottish properties and propose realistic alternatives or mitigations. If there are none and the answer and technology currently is 🤷🏻‍♀️ then that’s where we are.

I’m in the New Town. No triple glazing permitted here. I still have some original 18th century window glass that’s protected. You can’t insulate a flat roof and cupola - there’s no attic. No cavity walls either. Solar panels? Hahahaha, in a world heritage area where residents go to court to have specially designed gull-proof rubbish bags instead of ghastly, unsightly wheelie bins on the cobbles. You can’t even paint your front door here without it making national news never mind installing giant heat pumps.
