who is crazy enough to take this on?
plus…to deliver an audit in 4 weeks is going to be pushing it…

One of the first paragraphs in the BBC News story as it stands:

"Sources said the party now hopes to be able to file its accounts in time to meet key deadlines."

If the sources are conveying the SNP's attitude correctly, the verb "hopes" suggests that there is no commitment on the auditors' part in the contract to deal with the accounts by the deadlines.

Very wise, if so.

TheBelmont · 03/05/2023 10:48

Exactly @Chersfrozenface . No auditor with any credibility is going to commit to signing off accounts in only 4 weeks when there is clearly lots of uncertainty about whether the accounts are even in an auditable state. I haven’t found the name of the auditors reported anywhere yet….am intrigued as to who would take this on.

The £1.6m includes travel and subsistence costs but no training. I wonder where they're travelling to considering the boat isn't moving and they're not doing any training.

LongWhiteCar · 03/05/2023 12:40

The accountancy firm is AMS Accountants.
As long as they have an abacus and vague idea of the difference between right and wrong, they’re bound to be an improvement on the Murrell’s book keeping skills.

Baby boxes are not forced upon you. You sign up to receive them. If you don't want or need them, don't apply for one.

One of the young mums I know said the baby boxes are appreciated by the more affluent mothers and the rest are accepted and put on eBay or similar as those that really need them” wouldn’t be seen dead with them in any shape or form . “

Interesting

Sugarfree23 · 03/05/2023 13:19

I don't know anyone with a small baby these days but I have heard of someone who wasn't impressed that baby would settle in the box but not in their expensive moses basket or pram. 😂

I actually can't imagine anyone having their baby sleep in a cardboard box in 2023 in Scotland. If you've tried to sell a moses basket or crib, you'll know their isn't a big market for them.

I think people might use the vests and baby grows but again those things go for peanuts on the second hand market.

There's a tiny firm of women in Kerriemuir called AMS Accounting? Only set up recently and deal with small businesses.

2userspast3 · 03/05/2023 13:53

Sorry, I see that it's a different firm, based in Manchester.

Manchester! I wonder if no-one in Scotland would take them on?

TooOldForThisNonsense · 03/05/2023 14:06

Hardly a prestigious firm of accountants and not even Scottish based

SirChenjins · 03/05/2023 14:50

Oh god - Murrell and Sturgeon aren’t setting up as accountants are they?! Wonder who the A could be? Confused

Chersfrozenface · 03/05/2023 14:59

The CEO of this firm is Ebrahim Sidat who joined his father’s accountancy practice (AMS Accountants) in 2011. So the S is probably Sidat

Incidentally, the firm only has just over 200 employees in all its offices, and not all of them work on the auditing side.

If they already have work for other clients, some of the staff will be doing lots of overtime, I imagine.

SirChenjins · 03/05/2023 15:03

Very odd indeed.

Love the idea that prestigious firms need to be Scottish based! 😂

TheBelmont · 03/05/2023 15:13

I’ve never heard of them. Not even a mid tier firm. I would speculate there is no way they can deliver an audit to the required level of rigour in 4 weeks from a standing start with no prior engagement with the party.

Pals of Youseless apparently - and not part of a national grouping. The figures will show everything is tickety-boo, nothing to see here.

Chersfrozenface · 03/05/2023 15:44

The date of the firm's annual confirmation statement is 11 April and it should be submitted by 25 April.

They've done better this year - the previous two years the submission date has been 16 and 18 May.

Still, I expect the hastily arranged contract concentrated minds.

HirplesWithHaggis · 03/05/2023 15:47

Or someone read Wings. Grin

Chersfrozenface · 03/05/2023 16:02

It usually takes 24 hours for Companies House to accept or reject a confirmation statement, sometimes more, so AMS probably bunged it in before Wings published that piece - and of course before the announcement.

Only just before, though, I suspect.

This has always been my thoughts. Immigrant families would appreciate them no doubt but young/teen mums from poorer backgrounds generally want their babies in designer or knock-of designer wear or more recently hand knits. The people most likely to claim them and use them are wealthier (virtue signalling/SNP supporting) families who could well afford to buy the contents. It's another of those "let's make everyone equal" policies that does nothing such. The money spent would be far better ensuring there is support for early start and housing etc by targeting babies with a poorer start in life. I know this post contains a massive generalisation but it what I see now that DCs classmates (now in their early twenties) have been having babies for a couple of years (and in some cases they have their own DC at school).

Yes but sadly the majority of people will take a freebie if it is going. Same with free prescriptions…why spend 50p of your own money on paracetamol when you can get it on prescription for free (but costing the NHS £12 a pop or something ridiculous). People are shameless. 8 out of 9 of my NCT class took the baby box despite being able to afford to do NCT.

You're really judging people for signing up for a box full of essentials for their new baby?!

You sound like one of those lovely folks in America who argue against maternity leave. I can just imagine it if it wasn't already introduced here and the SG were putting it in place!

BigBoysDontCry · 03/05/2023 17:56

I guess it depends on whether you'd rather everyone got say £100 of baby things regardless of the fact that most have sufficient income to clothe their child or that the poorest of families got say £500 worth of support that they desperately need?

I know where I sit.

RandomGeocache · 03/05/2023 18:21

I am a middle class, educated, not skint person and would absolutely have taken the baby box if offered at the time mine were little. Better money in my pocket than in the retailer's. I am happy to buy second hand, reduced to clear, swap handmedowns with friends, charity shop. This is very much the norm in my fairly affluent area.

SIL had her children much younger than we had ours, she spent an enormous amount on some fancy pram (5 times what we spent) because she knew in her area, people would be judging her on it. She won't be seen DEAD even dropping stuff off at her local charity shop in case someone thinks she is buying. Everything is about proving that she can afford branded stuff and most definitely isn't struggling for money, even though she is. She would no sooner accept a baby box than fly to the moon.

Eh okay then….
That is money that could have been spent on other more deserving causes. All the money that went on baby boxes for people who don’t NEED them could have been spent on supporting people who DO need help in a more meaningful way. The whole thing was an Ill thought out vote winning crowd pleasing gimmick aimed at generating headlines.
I don’t know how you make the parallel to arguing against maternity leave?! That’s quite a (completely ridiculous) leap.
