No. Privacy is one of the main features of WhatsApp. Every message is encrypted and unlike other messaging apps there is no record kept on any server.

Only if you configure the backup to do so.

But there is no way to access that backup unless the user gives you their password. There have been numerous cases of people who have refused to unlock their phones and even the FBI are not able to access them or break the encryption.

If it's impossible for a third party to access then surely WhatsApp shouldn't be used for government business as there's no possibility for investigation.

We’re not allowed to use WhatsApp now in the NHS here after some inappropriate usage by staff - I hope the SG are now following suit.
