It wouldn't be just a name change its a new entity free of the SNPs debts.

So sort of like those dodgy double glazing companies on Watchdog / Rogue Traders who run up huge debts and close down, then reappear with a slightly different name and the same directors?

Yes I think so. But I don't really understand how political parties work. But the name change is definitely a move to free themselves from SNP debt.

SirChenjins · 15/04/2023 09:37

Surely they can’t just walk away from their debts like that - I thought the NEC were all personally liable?

Rainbowshit · 15/04/2023 10:00

Apparently there's an NEC meeting today. 🍿

That will be interesting - would love to be a fly on the wall in that meeting!

Rainbowshit · 15/04/2023 10:19

Hopefully it'll be leaked to Wings.

Isn't there already a party called the Scottish Independence Party? I'm sure I came across mention of one in the past.

What are the legalities of the SNP changing their name? Especially if they are the party in government?

There's the Independence for Scotland party.

It'd get a bit Monty Python ....

People’s front of Judea and the Judean People’s front springs to mind.

Although they’d have a problem with Stan / Loretta.

NowThatsWhatICall22 · 15/04/2023 12:57

Ooh plot twist- I’ve just read that if they change name/relaunch the party they obviously can’t use any data previously collected as the SNP.

If Data is your thing, you’ll understand how significant that is and how they’d be impacted re membership of ‘new’ party data etc.

Yikes 🍿

BigBoysDontCry · 15/04/2023 13:00

So who do we think could be the front person for this new party? Is it an attempt to ditch the Greens? Presume that's where they will lay the blame for the collapse?

Rainbowshit · 15/04/2023 13:04

How does this actually help them on the long run either? Who's going to be stupid enough to give their money to people with form for abdicating their financial responsibilities? Unless...

Pretty sure if they are just changing their name they can as legally they would still be the same organisation, but that would mean they also retain debts and any other problems the SNP have as it is still the SNP. If they launch a new party then the SNP would have to ask their members if they would be ok with SNP sharing information with SIP (like membership details).

Rainbowshit · 15/04/2023 13:31

Is this because they have realised that both votes SNP doesn't work in their favour? To maybe get rid of the greens getting people's second indy votes?

A rebrand is completely different to a whole other business if they do declare bankruptcy. There’s a value to the data they already hold and wouldn’t own it if business dissolved e.g. can’t just export membership etc.

I share your pain here. I couldn’t be more politically opposite to the Rev and his crusade is coming at this from a very different angle from mine but I am rather enjoying seeing him somewhat vindicated as he has been pointing much of this out for a long time.

Twitter saying that the SNP are nearly out of money and also rumour that Angus Robertson has resigned. Maybe explains why he declined to stand as party leader..

BlueThursday · 15/04/2023 22:15

Robertson creating a Judean people’s front?

Rainbowshit · 15/04/2023 22:20

Is it not Angus McDonald that's resigned his memebershio, not Robertson?
