Is part of the issue they need an auditor by the 22nd May?

And nobody really wants to touch it with a barge pole?

Shelefttheweb · 14/04/2023 17:26

MPs / MSPs are all voted in, in their own merit? Am I correct in thinking they can change their party allegiances without loosing their seats / jobs?

MPs are voted in as individuals, as are constituency MSPs, so they can become independents or change party. Not sure how many are voted in on their own merit though 🤔 But I don’t know about the list MSPs. If the SNP becomes bankrupt and folds then I guess all the MSPs become independents until they form/join a new party. The SNP don’t have many list MSPs but not sure if they would have to leave and if so who gets their seats?

NicolaSturGONE · 14/04/2023 18:21

If the SNP dont get an auditor by 22 May, what happens then? Sorry I'm not an expert on business and accounts and things like that.

TheBelmont · 14/04/2023 19:12

If they dont have an auditor by a certain date (I think maybe July) the Electoral Commission can appoint their own choice of auditor. Now, no reputable firm of auditors will likely look to take on an obvious basket case as this as the cost and reputationally damage to them would be huge. So I’d guess the Electoral Commission will appoint one of the big 4 and I would wager the accounts would be crawled over with the tiniest microscope…

NowThatsWhatICall22 · 14/04/2023 19:19

Does it matter if the party are bankrupt just now? I don’t think it means they have to surrender seats or go to a by-election status?

Isn’t it more that they would have no cash for for their SNP HQ staff salaries, election campaigning, the independence wet dream campaign, the purchase of random large vehicles to park up on relative’s driveways…all the other costs are scot gov financed, not party costs? For example, MSP salaries, Angus Robertson’s jollies overseas for pretendy bureau, etc. These are funded by us, the taxpayer.

Or am I missing the point? Even if bankrupt, they can rename the party and remain in those posts, can’t they?

TheBelmont · 14/04/2023 19:46

Are they bankrupt? I missed that but that would make sense. I dont know who would pay for the auditors if the electoral commission independently appoint someone. It should be the SNP but if they are bankrupt then I wonder if the electoral commission ends up with the bill (which probably equates to the taxpayer).

Shelefttheweb · 14/04/2023 20:10

Bankruptcy was speculation, not fact. Just thinking what would happen if.

NowThatsWhatICall22 I presume MPs and constituency MSPs keep their seats as they are appointed as individuals. But no idea about list MSPs.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 14/04/2023 21:43

there are loads of the SNP MPs and MSPs have removed any mention of the SNP on their social media bios…Twitter is quite interesting just now…. I know it’s Twitter but there’s usually a grain of truth buried amongst all the speculation. There’s a NEC meeting tomorrow - squeaky bum time?

BigBoysDontCry · 14/04/2023 21:54

A new domain name "scottishindependenceparty.scot" has been registered today! 👀

SirChenjins · 14/04/2023 22:01

Oooh - Forbes setting up a new party?

BigBoysDontCry · 14/04/2023 22:08

Could be anyone to be fair.

BigBoysDontCry · 14/04/2023 22:12

The party split into various factions is the way the wind seems to be blowing but who knows?

Pantsonfiretoday · 14/04/2023 23:40

There was an article in the Times a few days ago, by Brian Cox, about changing the SNP name to Scottish Independence Party. I need to go reread it

Sugarfree23 · 15/04/2023 00:00

So while the MSPs get to keep their seats.

Surely the Scottish Independence Party cannot just assume that theyll have the right to be the government.
Do we think we'ĺl end up with another election?

Quite - anyone who voted for them for reasons other than independence in accordance with the SNPs campaign (more fool them) could feel justifiably had. And certainly when it comes to the list vote - NO ONE voted for the Scottish Independence Party.

Mhairi Black has removed SNP from her Twitter handle but presumably she wouldn't align with Forbes?

He can bore off .

tobee · 15/04/2023 03:46

I was pondering. Name change is all very well but won't it run the risk of confusing some voters? Don't parties rely on their names for brand recognition for the ballot papers etc? If I was voting for a party looking for SNP and my ballot and saw SIP for eg would I automatically think that that was the same thing? Maybe it's even trickier with an acronym? Weren't the SNP mostly known as the ScotNats a few decades ago? What was the trajectory of that "brand" name change?

Sugarfree23 · 15/04/2023 08:16

It wouldn't be just a name change its a new entity free of the SNPs debts.

They don't seem to have a clue that the books need to balance, income vs outgoings.
It almost explains why they treat businesses so shabbily, expect them to survive on fresh air through covid and expect businesses to manage the bottle return scheme for nothing.

Never mind run a country. I imagine very quickly lots of free stuff will disappear.

KnittingNeedles · 15/04/2023 08:26

So sort of like those dodgy double glazing companies on Watchdog / Rogue Traders who run up huge debts and close down, then reappear with a slightly different name and the same directors?

Which is exactly what they think they can do with Scottish independence. Leave all the debts behind with rUK. 🙄

If only we had some other opinions on this thread, those who could perhaps explain further or even coughs defend what’s going on?

It’s funny how all the party faithful have suddenly disappeared, I can only assume theres no money to pay them they’re no longer employed to post on here 😝

KnittingNeedles · 15/04/2023 08:32

Or is it too much to hope that the scales have finally fallen from the eyes?
