And I'm quite glad. My mental health was shot to pieces by the first one.

Wonderful

Yes, the Supreme Court ruling is great!

Now, we need to ensure everyone understands that it is perfectly legal and, yes, democratic too. 👍

I have lived and worked here for over 40 years. My 3 dcs were born and raised here. I pay taxes, higher than in other parts of the UK.

During the last referendum i was told that I shouldnt have a vote, I should fuck off back to England and called an English cunt.

I am now sole carer for my mother but once she is away I will indeed be fucking off to England and taking my money with me. Being a woman in Scotland is not a good thing to be. Being English in an Indy Scotland will be horrific. Had many good years here but will be glad to go.

Tell that to the English for Scottish Independence movement...

And now for the next instalment of things that never happened 🙄

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 25/11/2022 13:16

TartanGirl1, my lovely English SIL was also told to fuck off back to England, and the vote was nothing to do with her. She's an NHS doctor in Glasgow. I've rarely seen her so upset. Or maybe that never happened either Hmm

Rocksludge · 25/11/2022 13:38

Let’s just deny the bits of people’s experiences that don’t fit with the pro-independence narrative the SNP want us all to believe. 🙄

MichelleScarn · 25/11/2022 13:39

@TartanGirl1 I'm Scottish and was as I've said upthread told to 'fuck off to England' if I wasn't voting for independence.
Your rude response 'and now for the next instalment of things that never happened 🙄'

No anti English sentiment whatsoever in Scotland?

That’s the thing that never happened.

@Notplayingball I never said all children would become obese due to the free bus pass. I said it would add to obesity issues. Unfortunately for some teenagers (often girls) walking to and from school is the only regular exercise they do. It's great your DS walks to school and has after school activities he goes to but that's not the case for everyone.

I'm not talking rubbish that the bus stops round me now have school kids queuing at them to take them to/from school or back from the shop at lunchtime. I've lived here for nearly 20 years and only ever saw this before in heavy rain, but sadly not now. I wonder what the difference is now?

I'm not against the free bus pass at all but think if it was targeted at older teens, early 20s then that's the group we would keep from car ownership straight away. And 12 year olds starting high school would get into habit of walking every day with their friends if they didn't get bus pass until say age 16.

I’d love to see the stats on increased bus use by secondary school kids. My niece takes a bus 3 stops to school and 3 stops home. It must be really irritating for the drivers.

It’s really irritating for the other passengers! (I say as one who quite often can’t get a seat now as it’s rammed with kids who are making a racket and mucking about swearing and shouting at each other) I have the joy of passing three secondary schools in my morning commute. It was never this unpleasant pre free kids travel.

I believe you.

I'm an independence voter. There is a small fraction of the movement that is anti-English - everyone I know in the movement though thinks those people with that idiotic banner above are morons. To be honest it's a general joke that Scots don't really like the English, I'm not saying it's a good one. See here:

Obviously if you're living here and chose to make your life here you have as much right to a vote as anyone else.

Summer23 · 25/11/2022 18:08

@janeseymour78 I agree, there is a minority but unfortunately they receive far too much focus when it comes to independence debates. Personally I don’t know anyone who wants independence who is anti English. Free bus travel for kids is a positive and I don’t agree about this having an impact on obesity and particularly girls only walking to and from school. It’s our job as parents to ensure our kids get enough exercise and for me this means encouraging them to be involved in sport. Nothing to do with a free bus pass. Independence shouldn’t be a once in a generation vote, Scots should be able to vote on this should they choose to.

It’s not funny - it’s embarrassing and the casual bigotry that gets trotted out under the guise of humour does nothing for the nationalist cause.

Absolutely agree with this, why does the independence movement think xenophobia Is so funny and whimsical?

Agree. Not many other groups have to find this stuff funny.

The Independence movement doesn't. A 'minority' as Summer pointed out does.

And by the way, my relative has lived in England most of his adult life and I've heard a few bigoted anti Scottish jokes aimed at him when I've visited. So let's not pretend the bigotry is a one way street. It should be called out whenever it happens.

I've also experienced it in a job a few years ago. My first time thankfully but it's horrible when you're on the receiving end.

SirChenjins · 25/11/2022 20:05

Is it a minority? I’m not so sure - hating the English seems to be a sort of National sport and seen as nothing more than good natured banter. When you’ve got children calling them English cunts like the ones in the vide upthread and it’s seen as funny then you get a sense of how widespread it is. Can you imagine the furore if it was seen as acceptable for children and employees of Edinburgh university to be filmed talking about hating people from Pakistan or India, for example?

I said it's a minority in the independence movement. In all the years I've been in the movement I've come across it only a few times. And I do call it out, it makes me uncomfortable.

I'm not saying that it isn't more widespread. Plenty of pro-union Scots make similar jokes. The comparison with Pakistan and India is pointless. Scottish people have a bone to pick with England specifically. But bigotry isn't the answer and I notice you ignored my comment on the anti-Scottish comments I've experienced from down South.

SirChenjins · 25/11/2022 21:51

No, I didn’t ignore it - but as we’re on a thread about Scottish independence and discussing the widespread anti English sentiment in Scotland which hides behind good natured banter - but which we all know is more than that - I thought it irrelevant in the same way you thought my comparison to Pakistan was.

Scottish people don’t have a bone to pick - although some Scottish people seem to. I disagree that pro unionist ‘banter’ exists to anywhere near the same level - those that do use are making a knuckle dragging political statement rather than firing shots at a whole country and it’s people which seems perfectly justified to many.

SirChenjins · 25/11/2022 21:52

*Its people

Workerbeep · 26/11/2022 06:59

all these micro aggressions are shameful.
my brother in law won’t even support his team England at sport now just to assimilate and try to prove he is one of us.

Remember the irn bru advert that was oh so funny (not) ? The daughter’s boyfriend was English and the dad was so upset by this, but irn bru made it ok. I can’t believe they got away with this, Och it’s just banter cos we all really hate the English who are our oppressors.

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 26/11/2022 08:05

ABE, eh?

RhannionKPSS · 26/11/2022 16:29

I see there was a “ march “ on the BBC Scotland headquarters today...obviously, in their minds the BBC are to blame for something or other, possibly the NHS leak or maybe BBC Scotland aren’t following the dear leader and her orders any more.
