Tell me this is not real please. Scotland's first period dignity officer is a man. A MAN.

I just can't put into words how furious this makes me. Females are having the pis absolutely ripped out of them in Scotland.

What the fuck would a male understand about the indignity of realising you'd leaked through onto your clothes.

About the cold fear when your period is late.

About trying to unwrap a tampon quietly. Etc etc.

I suppose the only saving grace is at least they are not claiming to be a woman.

@Discovereads given your upstanding fight against misinformation I take it you’re not happy with how periods have been described as ‘affecting all genders’ and the talk of ‘menstruating young people’?
And given your views that people’s feelings about this aren’t valid I take it you condemn how the Scottish government has erased all references to women and girls because it will offend men who identify as women? Or is it only women’s feelings that don’t matter?

Waitwhat23 · 16/08/2022 17:02

Ah, managed to find the link regarding the 4 women managers - www.graingerpr.co.uk/newsroom/dundee-man-leads-scotland-in-role-to-end-period-poverty/

An FOI would be interesting. I wonder if MBM might do one.

I was interested to read this, under the photo mentioned a few times on this thread -

'Jason Grant (in red) showcasing the range of period products to mother and daughter Rosie Gilbert and Angel Gilbert from Arbroath and Euan Smith from Broughty Ferry.'

Cheekymaw · 16/08/2022 02:42

The actual front of that Jason. What a bloody cheeky . Honestly Scotland yer taking the absolute pish. And @PissedOffUnison is that a Scottish Unison branch that has the male menopause rep? I left Unison down here (South East England ) because of their vote to remove the Nordic model and declare Self ID as the One True Faith with consulting any members except the chosen LGBT committee conference ones. No going to pay into a union that doesn't even give me a token vote after paying in for twenty odd years.

@Cheekymaw no it’s not a Scottish branch. The madness is countrywide unfortunately. Unison are fully captured.

In Scotland, period products are now available free to all, no charge.

Jason's job is publicising the service, and liaising with schools, colleges, councils etc about where and how the supplies of free products are distributed . (Its 5 years since Dundee initiated a postal service for free period products) .

I don't find any of the above inappropriate for a man. It's got absolutely NOTHING to do with shy leaky girls having to ask a man for a tampon.

DH and I both in agreement that it's not a big deal if a man has appointed for the job. You don't need to have a period to spread the message of the legislation changing for the better.

User48751490 · 16/08/2022 17:25

You all could have applied for the job just like Jason did if you had felt so strongly that a woman could do it better. The post was open to all and sundry, mind.

If the job, his job, is literally just to spread this message then why didn't they hire a marketing manager / social media manager etc?

So many "his job is just X" comments. Okay so if his job is just X, then why isn't it called X?

Why is he called the Period Dignity Lead Officer? Why is he giving interviews saying he wants to be a role model? Why is he 'buzzing' for a bog standard PM role? Why did he describe his job as a PT with a course in mental health as 'a natural progression' if it's a glorified marketing manager? Why is he doing photo opportunities mansplaining period products to a mother old enough to have a teenager?

What exactly are we all missing here?

WillNotWheesht · 16/08/2022 17:40

As long as your DH agrees, then we’re ok 🙄

You're not missing anything. Certain posters are very keen on downplaying any aspects of the job that are actually to do with periods. Which strikes me that they know fine well it's not appropriate for a male to be talking to young females about periods or taking a leading role with period dignity as its goal. 🤔

Not accusing them of anything, of course, but he was working for the college and one of the women who hired him was from the college.

I remember when my old work used to have to advertise posts where the job was already guaranteed to go to an internal candidate for HR reasons. Massive waste of time for everyone involved and 'jobs for the boys' on the sly.

*These two sentences are totally unrelated and you can put them together only if you choose to do so 😇

2bazookas · 16/08/2022 17:51

Given the subject matter, you'd think it would be rather more suitable for a woman, wouldn't you?

Well, no.

I've had male GPs and gynaecologists, one male midwife, men delivered my babies, my breasts nipples labia and vagina have been felt, discussed examined and operated on by specialists who were men. It never ever crossed my mind "It would be more suitable if this was a woman". I never felt the slightest bit embarrassed or inhibited and nor did they.

In the same way, It never crossed my mind that a midwife should have given birth, an oncologist should have experienced cancer, or that the urologists and radiologists treating DH's prostate cancer should be male.

Tha · 16/08/2022 17:57

Sounds like you're almost exactly the opposite to the type of women or girl who'd need to be understood and reached by a Period Dignity Lead Officer, doesn't it?

Good for you, having all that confidence 👍🏻

Waitwhat23 · 16/08/2022 18:05

The highly trained medical professionals who happen to be men opposed to someone whose experience appears to consist of - a marketing job for a tobacco company, running his own personal training company and a student engagement officer post at a College and has no apparent experience or in-depth knowledge/training regarding menstruation, using period products or experiencing menstruation stigma?

That guy?

And how lovely you don't feel inhibited. Plenty of women do though. Hence why some women request to be examined by female medical professionals or only feel comfortable talking about female health issues with other females.

Cool. I’ve had all kinds of male doctors who’ve been great, but I found I really didn’t like dealing with male gynaecologists. So that is the one kind of doctor I specifically ask for a female.

Guess what? Everyone is different.

Good post.

And to be fair - some men prefer dealing with a male for intimate health issues.

The whole point about dignity is reaching people who feel like its something that removes their dignity and they have embarassment over.

A guy going loudly 'look at me and how easy it is to talk about these issues openly' is kinda missing a huge part of the remit.

It might breakdown some barriers, but it absoluetely won't help women who have problems caused by indignity or cultural obstacles...

Queenoftheflumps02 · 16/08/2022 19:11

Slightly off topic, but I couldn't resist. Another tone deaf quote from Jason;

"I think being a man will help me to break down barriers, reduce stigma and encourage more open discussions."

His arrogance is breathtaking!

Absolutely this, which appears to be lost on so many 'well it doesn't bother me' people.

Mr Grant will also discuss issues around menopause as part of his role.

With whom will he discuss these issue?

Given that it's 18 months fixed term graduate position, on a very low salary, I imagine not many middle aged people applied.

They probably struggled to recruit.

I don't understand why you're clamouring that a woman must have been passed over for the job.

Very low salary?

Oh, OK. I didn't remember that everybody is on a six figure one here and would never lower themselves to such a pittance. A pittance that somebody who had been working term time only to fit around school hours, for example, would be unlikely to receive. Or part time in the NHS. Or as a personal trainer.

Obviously, they couldn't find a single person who was capable of such a job and also of a different ethnicity, either.

So tough for them - the only choice they had was the white bloke.

Waitwhat23 · 16/08/2022 19:33

Very low salary?

I've also been a bit agog at 'very low salary'. I work for another local authority, in a job which requires professional qualifications, and I earn around £10k less than this job. I can only dream of earning that kind of money.

The national salary is around £24k, I think so for some posters to describe the salary for this job as 'very low' is astoundingly tone deaf.

PrimAndProperPearlClutcher · 16/08/2022 19:37

It's a pretty good salary.

User48751490 · 16/08/2022 20:03

Jing's! Give Jason a chance in his new post. No need for being so narrow minded 🙄

CrabbitBastard · 16/08/2022 20:11

The guy used to be a personal trainer, then a wellbeing officer. Not exactly a lot of experience in diversity and inclusion.

I get that periods shouldn't be something men are afraid to discuss, but definitely not something they are the lead on.
