Just back from England and what a lovely experience that was ... hardly any masks anywhere - even in massive groups, on public transport, tourist attractions etc etc. Really no longer expected.

Interesting to see what happens in Scotland now - went to Sainsbury's yesterday afternoon as no food in the house and pleasantly surprised to see about 50% of people maskless. Another story at work today though - continuing doom and gloom, need to protect colleagues who are vulnerable / feel unsafe / continue to wear masks in communal area. Local Boots also limiting numbers and insisting on masks ...

runningpink · 25/04/2022 14:52

I’m railing that the pop up test site has been in my local town at least three days last week but possibly more.

Taking up space in the main car park so
visitors struggle even more to find parking and also not a great look when visiting somewhere.

still seeing people wearing them outdoors even when it’s I’m really quiet areas

Are masks also ditched on trains and busses now? And can you drink alcohol on the train or was that ditched?

RaraRachael · 25/04/2022 17:52

I don't think the alcohol ban on trains has been removed yet but may be wrong. I never understood if this was to stop Covid wafting throughout the carriages as soon as somebody cracked open some booze.

We can't even get a trolley service on trains up here. Last week we got one all the way from Aberdeen to ............. Dundee!

Justmuddlingalong · 25/04/2022 21:50

We were in Perthshire last week for a wee break. I breezed about on trains and buses, in shops, restaurants, pubs and tourist attractions, mask free. It was brilliant, although DP was a bit swayed when seeing other people wearing masks. My comment to him saying that "he/she/those people are wearing a mask," was "good for them." He got my drift quite quickly and stopped mentioning it.

GoldenOmber · 26/04/2022 07:00

My local Boots is still asking for masks, and so is the post office and a couple of shops. Masks AND 2m distance AND signs on the door about how many people are allowed in at a time. (Which I always found a bit odd because how am I supposed to know from outside how many people are in your shop already?)

Up to them I suppose but I do wonder how long they’re planning to keep it. Maybe they’ve tapped into a pool of customers who prefer it like that and will make up the sales from those of us who can’t be faded and go elsewhere?

GoldenOmber · 26/04/2022 07:01

Can’t be faffed, that should say. Although I do feel a bit faded after 2+ years of all this!

WouldBeGood · 26/04/2022 08:09

Yes, @GoldenOmber the number of people inside thing has really got to me- after a couple of occasions of being screeched at on entering erroneously I stopped going anywhere like that. Absolutely ridiculous that it’s still going on.

runningpink · 26/04/2022 15:40

Thanks. I might just stick some alcohol in my bag just incase.

WouldBeGood · 26/04/2022 18:32

I’m sure they won’t care @runningpink . No masks required on public transport now

OP posts:
mapleleavesreturn · 27/04/2022 18:57

Just saw masks on planes, trains, buses etc declared unconstitutional and now binned in the US - considering the extremity of the debate on masks there that is quite something.

WouldBeGood · 27/04/2022 19:55

@mapleleavesreturn I alternate between being pleased and really upset about the abuse I got for questioning all this.

mapleleavesreturn · 27/04/2022 21:07

Covid has been an eye opener in terms of what people will give up for a notion of safety. I

WouldBeGood · 27/04/2022 21:16

Absolutely @mapleleavesreturn

Dinoteeth · 28/04/2022 07:36

@mapleleavesreturn totally. It also shows how easily people can be brainwashed into believing stuff. And the level of trust people have in authority.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 28/04/2022 09:24

I agree @Dinoteeth and I have to confess I've been surprised and honestly a bit disappointed with the level of unquestioning obedience people have displayed towards to the end of the pandemic, with apparently little thought to the harms caused by the measures taken. I think it was understandable early on when there were no vaccines, no-one knew what was happening, and there was justifiably a lot of fear and uncertainty. But restrictions in the last couple of waves have been totally ineffective and mostly political, yet still you had people screaming at others to wear a face covering on public transport and elsewhere.

I mean it's obvious to anyone who cares to look that there have been no significant differences in infection levels between England and Scotland the last year or so, with each nation going through peaks at different times, and frankly when you look at things like excess deaths England's have been below the pre-pandemic average for the last wave while ours have been higher - i.e. our death rate is worse overall. Our additional restrictions clearly have not helped and reports of the various harms continue to roll in from all directions, yet people, in large part, complied because they were told to and had faith in the government. I find it astonishing.

CoralPaperweight · 28/04/2022 09:29

I find it astonishing that freedom of speech has gone out of the window with Covid. Exceptionally hard to have a discussion / debate about the issues (not on this thread of course) without being accused of being 'selfish, uncaring or a granny killer' so have not expressed my views publicly IRL for over a year now. I will not be divulging for instance that DS (age 8) will not be having the vaccine because I don't see the need for it and the benefits to him are not proven.

GoldenOmber · 28/04/2022 11:04

I’ve been really surprised by how willing many people have been to change their whole way of thinking about things they seemed to care about before.

”Brexit is terrible, free movement is more than just holidays, we are citizens of the world” -> “we need to keep al the borders closed indefinitely in case foreigners bring the plague in, shut up whining, you care more about your holiday than saving lives.”

”Schools are essential, education is so important” -> “there will be no harm at all from schools being closed for months, Tories just want people back to work.”

“These are just short-term emergency measures for an exceptional situation” -> “it is irresponsible and callous of you to even talk about an exit strategy, don’t you CARE.”

”Poverty kills” -> “stop wailing about ‘the economy’, that’s just about supporting rich people.”

”Boris is a power-hungry wannabe dictator” -> “I can’t believe Boris is letting us mix households over Christmas, what’s the point of ‘advice’ why can’t he just make it law not to.”

I can absolutely accept that people might disagree with me over whether specific things are worth the costs against the benefits. But I’m just baffled at this willingness to happily hurl all values and reasoning and the very idea of cost-benefit analysis out of the window.

Dinoteeth · 28/04/2022 11:42

The only benefit I can see to little kids getting the vaccine is for international travel.
Cost us to get a PCR done on DS for our last holiday and no bugger looked at it.

mapleleavesreturn · 28/04/2022 12:00

I just lost dd's letter on a covid jab down the back of the sofa - dog had the other one. Can I have the urgent appts for things that affect the day to day quality of her life instead please?

I don't go out of my way to talk about child vaccines though!

NEWS: New ‘stay at home’ guidance published

Changes from 1 May.

From Sunday 1 May public health advice will change to a ‘stay at home’ message replacing self-isolation for people who have symptoms or have tested positive for Covid-19.

People who have symptoms of Covid-19 and who have a fever or are too unwell to carry out normal activities will be asked to ‘stay at home’ while they are unwell or have a fever. They will no longer be advised to take a PCR test.

The changes, part of the Test and Protect Transition Plan which was published last month, will also see all contact tracing ending.

As previously announced, testing for the general population will end on 30 April with test sites closing at that point too. However, testing will remain available to certain groups in order to protect high risk settings, support clinical care and for surveillance purposes.

Those groups include health and social care workers, care home and hospital visitors, patients groups eligible for treatment, hospital patients, unpaid carers and people in prison.

Other adults who have symptoms of Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses and have a high temperature or do not feel well enough to go to work or carry out normal activities, are advised to stay at home until their fever has gone or they feel well enough.

Children and young people aged 18 and under with mild symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, or slight cough, who are otherwise well, do not need to stay at home and can continue to attend education settings.

They should only stay at home if they are unwell and have a high temperature. They can go back to school, college or childcare, and resume normal activities when they no longer have a fever and they feel well enough to attend.

This guidance reflects the fact that children and young people generally have a higher likelihood than adults of regular instances of respiratory symptoms from non-Covid illnesses.

The Protect Scotland app will also be closed down shortly, but users are encouraged to keep the app on their phones in case it is needed again at a future date.

NHS Scotland will also be taken out of emergency footing at the end of Saturday 30 April as Covid-19 cases continue to fall.

However, with continued demands on services across health and social care, there remains a need for caution to protect vital services.

Patients should only attend A&E if their condition is an emergency, to continue to limit the pressure on services. Patients can contact their GP during the day, local pharmacy or call NHS24 on 111 as an alternative.

Health Secretary Humza Yousaf said:

“Scotland’s Test and Protect programme has been one of the key interventions in our response to Covid-19, the success of which has been due, in no small part, to the remarkable staff and volunteers working in Test and Protect - my sincere thanks go to them.

“I would also like to thank the Scottish public for their commitment and willingness to engage with Test and Protect when it was required of them and helping to protect their fellow citizens.

“However, we recognise we are now in a different phase of the pandemic. The primary purpose of testing is changing from population-wide testing to reduce transmission, to a targeted response focused on reducing severe harm of the virus.

“As we are now seeing a steady reduction in new Covid cases, the NHS will no longer remain on emergency footing after Saturday 30 April. But we must continue with a measured approach to support the recovery and renewal of our NHS.

“This will require balancing capacity of the NHS and the wellbeing of the workforce to respond to increasing demands for urgent care while reducing the backlog of planned care.”

Further information on the stay at home guidance and measures you can take to limit the spread of Covid-19 can be found at Stay at home guidance and from 1 May on nhsinform.scot/covid19.

CoralPaperweight · 28/04/2022 17:19

I had a panic attack then @Justmuddlingalong ... 'stay at home' guidance sounded suspiciously like lockdown for a moment there .... panic flashbacks to not being allowed to leave your LA area ...

Justmuddlingalong · 28/04/2022 17:28

Sorry @CoralPaperweight . 😟
I just read it and copied and pasted. Hope your heart rate's settled.

CoralPaperweight · 28/04/2022 17:54

Yes thank you😂- SG have clearly run out of ways to express their (clear as mud) guidance if they are recycling phrases

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 28/04/2022 19:32

Oh hello. Found you all. With new site and the finishing up my 3rd year at uni haven't been on much

Fucking stay at home. It's like they can't help themselves but get that on there. Shall catch up now but hope my fellow railers are all well.

I'm now going to pop a bottle and celebrate getting through this years shitshow

Haudyourwheesht · 28/04/2022 21:06

Stay at home when you're sick. Go to work when you're not.

It's revolutionary.
