A few papers have reported it, including The Independent. It's not letting me copy links.

mapleleavesreturn · 25/02/2022 21:36

2/3 of Britons supporting a Ukraine resettlement scheme? We'll see what happens next week, I can't see public opinion being what it is in the uk that what you're citing will stick. Yvette Cooper seems to be pursing this.

Scottishskifun · 25/02/2022 22:04

The bill has been going through for many many weeks I still don't agree with it but its not new or just affects Ukraine.
Visa applications within a country are usually dealt with by the British embassy in that country I think they have evacuated it in Kiev.

The papers are right if the bill go through a legal route option is difficult but as said the bill has been progressing for some time now.

StarryEyeSurprise · 25/02/2022 22:23

Very sad.

WouldBeGood · 26/02/2022 10:53

I was a staunch remainer but have to concede that the UK has done much better than the EU in relation to support for Ukraine as with the vaccine roll our.

It also makes me very aware that, with the way the world is, I would not like to live in a defenceless tiny country, like an independent Scotland.

The SNP and Alba also have worrying ties with Russia.

I feel so sad for the Ukrainian people.

StarryEyeSurprise · 26/02/2022 11:32

There's no visa requirement for Ukrainians to enter the EU. Countries are already accepting refugees from the crisis.
Hopefully it'll change shortly but their position is currently the polar opposite of the UK's situation.

WouldBeGood · 26/02/2022 12:42

But the uk is supplying military help much more than the other countries.

OP posts:
mapleleavesreturn · 26/02/2022 16:01

It's a little premature to say the uk isn't doing it's part for Ukrainian refugees yet, so far Ukrainians are still asking for help to stay and fight primarily, and the uk gov focus of sanctions and military aid has been as much as could've been hoped for short of launching a world war.

WouldBeGood · 26/02/2022 16:46

I’m sure we can unite in railing against the whole invasion of Ukraine.

OP posts:
mapleleavesreturn · 26/02/2022 17:49

Absolutely. I've been entertaining daydreams about someone taking out Putin but I'm sure he's well guarded sadly.

Dinoteeth · 26/02/2022 17:49

We can definitely unite in railing against the attack on Ukraine.

As always the people who send the orders are not the people who are in any danger of being hit.
I really feel for everyone involved, the Ukrainians and the Russian soldiers on the ground & their families.

mibbelucieachwell · 26/02/2022 18:45

I blame Priti Patel. Despite not having followed the visa bill. This has all the hallmarks of her mean mindedness.

I feel ashamed of the UK stance. A guy talking on R4 has been trying to get his partner over here for a week but she has to wait for her visa to be processed. It seems there are lots of people in the same situation.

starryeyesurprise I wouldn't be so confident that a sovereign Scottish government would be any better. It might, but there's no way to tell. The treatment of refugees in Glasgow, turfed out of their accommodation and put into substandard hotels/hostels during the lockdown was pretty shoddy.

Definitely. It's unbelievable what's happening to the poor souls.

That wasn't the Scottish Government. It was the UK Government. Members of the SG protested and tried to stop the raids, the same as during the Govanhill raid.

Ditto. Hopefully someone close to him is brave enough .
mibbelucieachwell · 26/02/2022 22:20

@StarryEyeSurprise I was referring to the hotel in Glasgow which refugees were moved into during lockdown. But I see from further reading that it was the home office who 'organised' it. Apologies.

Has anyone else heard from their kids high school that masks will still be mandatory at all times from Monday ?

That's ok. Yes, immigration is fully under the control of the UK Government.

Agree 100% with this!

Much though I think the UK should take a more humanitarian approach to immigration in general, and particularly to people fleeing a war zone ffs, I can see why it is reserved. Unless you want to end up with visa checks at Berwick to ensure no one is coming into friendly cuddly Scotland aiming to end up in england without being checked they meet whatever requirements England has. So it's always going to be a bit of a bone of contention with SG and completely predictable they will want to look critical of the UK stance, whatever that is.

Pootle40 · 27/02/2022 08:33

@ExcuseeeeMe

In 'common areas' yes but confirmed not in classrooms
WouldBeGood · 27/02/2022 09:31

Same as @Pootle40 as regards masks in schools: corridors/canteen/etc but not classrooms

OP posts:
ExcuseeeeMe · 27/02/2022 12:01

We have been told by the head to wear them in classrooms too. I’m not sure how many kids will. I know my son will as he will do what he is told. It’s such a shame I was hoping for some normality for him .

WouldBeGood · 27/02/2022 12:11

That’s really awful @ExcuseeeeMe

OP posts:
mibbelucieachwell · 27/02/2022 12:11

Shock At a headteacher telling you to wear a mask in the classroom. What a thing to tell you to do, especially when children are adversely affected by having the adults around them in masks.

Definitely resilience wanker Easy for the Scot gov, who are in opposition to the Westminster government by definition to claim to be welcoming, inclusive etc.
