Bloody ridiculous pay as you drive they would have to set up decent public transport first!
We can't even get from one town to the next (approx 10 miles) as there is no public transport without going 45 minutes in the wrong direction to get another bus once there!
Yes - it's so obvious that the folks suggesting this have their minds stuck purely in the central belt. Unsurprising, given they'll be in the SG policy offices in Edinburgh or Glasgow - walking or cycling to work, or getting the bus or train. With most of their social circle in the same city, or easily got to by public transport...
There seems to be no acknowledgement that many, many people don't have this situation - that public transport is non existent in parts of the country, or at best a pain in the arse to use for any practical purpose. That many people can't "just walk, wheel or cycle instead of driving" due to issues of distance, infirmity, caring responsibilities, or even weather, geography and timetables (personal and transport timetables)! And that it's not very easy to lug equipment needed to do some jobs/ activities round in a rucksack or on the bus. (It was difficult enough for me to persuade the bus driver to let me take our christmas tree a couple of miles home on the bus when our usual supplier let us down - and a trip to IKEA is right out without funds for a taxi back or delivery). It seems somewhat shortsighted to assume this policy will result in the same behaviour change by people in rural areas and cities...and that there won't be any regressive effect on people who DO need a car and can't just choose an alternative.
I've never actually understood what "wheeling" is in this context anyway, as distinct from cycling! I get the mental picture of a hipster on a micro scooter, but I'm not sure that is what they mean!
