The festive special!

As always, all railing welcome, along with good things or humorous asides. No resilience wankery. This is the safe place to let out anything that’s doing your head in.

Thanks @rookiemere you made me think of it!

@rookiemere

You feeling grim after your booster *@ResilienceWanker* ? I had a night of feeling sick and a day of being crabbit but seem back to normal now ( not quite so crabbit).
A bit, yes! Was really shivery and feverish on Monday night, and very bad sleep... then yesterday spent most of the day in bed, frustratingly. Feeling much better today, though, and hope to make it out to planned things tonight (had to miss yesterday's) as long as it doesn't involve arm use! Similar to when I had covid, really, in that it took a couple of days out of me, but without the week or so of wibblyness afterwards, hopefully. But at least it's done me some good...

I'm all up for breakfast wine though Xmas Wink

ElephantOfRisk · 22/12/2021 13:07

I'm railing at my turkey arriving today instead of tomorrow and the mild weather that means the garage won't be a good resting place for him. Dh was a bit over ambitious and ordered on for 10-12 for the 4 of us as he wouldn't like to be short on turkey so I don't think it will go in the fridge regardless. Plan was for it to arrive tomorrow and be cooked on Christmas Eve. I've also got my Waitrose shop arriving today as I got muddled up when Christmas was... Hmm

Fridge isn't yet empty enough to accommodate everything. Plus I'm a joint of lamb short and no yule log - they've substituted that with profiteroles - I mean just why? Most of the other substitutions are fine.

ElephantOfRisk · 22/12/2021 13:07

Very selfish railing btw, I do appreciate that.

rookiemere · 22/12/2021 13:27

mmmmm profiteroles....yum

rookiemere · 22/12/2021 13:28

I have to say @ElephantOfRisk that's the best middle class mumsnet rant I've heard for ages Grin

ElephantOfRisk · 22/12/2021 13:31

I'd eat them to be fair (but no one else would be keen) but I'm guessing £10 worth of profiteroles will take up more space in my fridge than a yule log. Don't even know if the yule log was meant to be a chilled one anyway. It was mainly for DS2 as he is more of a chocolate man than really liking the other things which I've bought for the rest of us. He doesn't like choux pastry so I'll need to go out and get something else.

ElephantOfRisk · 22/12/2021 13:32

yep and i'm not even middle class! although i do own some clothes from White stuff and Joules! Blush
rookiemere · 22/12/2021 13:47

Well you're definitely classier than me @ElephantOfRisk . I nearly fainted with shock at the cost of the M&S turkeys so DH has ordered from some online cheap butcher - I may need to rush out and get another turkey depending on size.

ElephantOfRisk · 22/12/2021 13:56

It helps to break the cost down per portion so I think ours works out at about a fiver a head so cheaper than a steak. It is still pretty eye watering though. Ours is coming from Costco. I feel bad saying this, but we really like meat. We don't bother with starters and dessert will just be later in the evening so the focus of our day (4 adults) is Christmas dinner and in particular the turkey. I therefore don't really grudge it but I'm lucky that we can afford to do it. A good quality turkey also cooks in half the time so I guess we save on electricity Grin Our (feeds 10) turkey should only take an hour and a half to cook.

RatinaMaze · 22/12/2021 15:27

I tend to dip in an out of these threads but right now I need to rail against myself. I've gotten myself in such a state, terrified to take a bloody test. It's my 4th tomorrow and we've got lovely things planned - already scaled back four times. I want so much to go ahead with the small plans I have left. I feel 100% healthy but am utterly convinced that either DH or I will be positive and everything will be off.

I know testing is the right thing to do, as is isolating if positive. I also know that others have had to cancel much more important things than a bloody adult birthday but it's just been such a shit year and I was so looking forward to this.

And I'm annoyed at myself for being so defeatist when I haven't even taken the test yet. It might all be fine.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 22/12/2021 15:35

I get you, I feel like we should all test but for the first time ever, I'm nervous to do it.

I absolutely hated it just being the four of us last year, and I think we'd make more of an effort this year if it came down to it, but I don't bloody want to!

alicesfavouritepen · 22/12/2021 15:36

It's horrible. ThanksThanksThanks

RatinaMaze · 22/12/2021 15:42

I'm tempted not to but I know that's wrong/irresponsible. DH is a testing fanatic though and is on at me to do it.

rookiemere · 22/12/2021 15:47

We're really bad. We took a pact in our household not to test later than 15th December.DH and I have now been triple jabbed, but DS 15 only had one.

None of our visitors are clinically vulnerable ( although one is significantly overweight in his early 60s) and have mostly been wfh or don't go out much anyway.

My DPs are refusing to see us for a week after the other families visit, even if we do a LFT, so I'm so keen to have the big family Christmas we were denied last time I'm simply not testing. I suspect DH would divorce me if I did and it was positive.

Omicron is rife and basically uncontainable. I'll test when visiting DPs or if I have symptoms, but that's it. Most of life is likely to be stripped away post Christmas anyway so I'm not doing it to myself voluntarily.

RatinaMaze · 22/12/2021 15:56

Honestly, rookiemere I know it's wrong but I completely understand with what you are doing. I suggested the same but DH was horrified. His dad is CV and we're going there for christmas dinner - I would definitely test before that (and if I got symptoms) and have backup christmas dinner in case we need to cancel.

Tomorrow we're going for a drive along the coast and walk on the beach followed by dinner in a restaurant. DH keeps on at me that there might be someone in the restaurant who is cv and I'll be risking passing the virus to them if I don't test first. He's right, I know. But the restaurant have already emailed us to reassure us about distancing and ventilation. The rest of the day poses no risk. For info, if we don't go out for dinner we're pretty stuffed - there's one takeaway in our village where the food has been consistently awful and deliveroo etc don't come to us. Restaurants which were doing takeaway service in lockdown are, understandably, not offering it now that they are allowed to open to customers. I don't want to cook and clean up - just want to be treated for the day!

Something has gone very wrong when loads of us have no fear of catching the virus but fear the isolation.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 22/12/2021 15:59

I can really see both sides of it. All of my family have had Covid in the last 4-5 months and are triple jabbed, so as immune as they could possibly be. On the other hand it feels a bit immoral not to be sure, my Dad is 71 after all. 🤷🏻‍♀️

rookiemere · 22/12/2021 16:08

@RatinaMaze my view - and it's possibly horribly selfish- but if anyone is very concerned about catching covid then they shouldn't be in a restaurant at this point in time when the numbers are so high. I don't believe for a second that flimsy filthy masks ( that are taken off when sat down) and slightly spaced out tables would do much to stop one getting omicron if it was in the room.

ssd · 22/12/2021 16:21

Its just rhe 4 of us every year. I try to make it special but its hard. But i cant knit relatives.
In other news, ds getting a pcr tonight 🤦‍♀️

runningpink · 22/12/2021 16:27

I have never tested (if I ever have any symptoms then I would of course) it’s now more because I live in absolute fear of having to isolate.

But I am going to stay with friends tomorrow evening who have oversea guests coming on Friday and elderly relatives who they will be spending Xmas with and they have asked if I would do a lft.
So under these circumstances I have ordered tests and will do one tomorrow morning.

I am absolutely petrified that it could be positive even though I’m fine/no symptoms. This is no way to live is it

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/12/2021 16:29

Completely understand @rookiemere We have a vulnerable relative we're seeing at Christmas, so I do need to test, but I'm not sure I would otherwise unless I had symptoms. Almost every single thing I had planned for December had to be cancelled, I just couldn't bear it if Christmas Day went the same way.

RatinaMaze · 22/12/2021 16:30

I've just realised. It's not my 4th tomorrow. It's my 40th. [facepalm]

Still not tested. I have at least got DH to agree that we're testing tonight and not tomorrow. Having to cancel plans the night before seems better than doing it on the day.

I've now convinced myself that my throat is getting scratchy. This is clearly psychosomatic.

Scottishskifun · 22/12/2021 16:35

I test before seeing vulnerable family will not test DS under any circumstances other then insistence of a Dr.
Also tested before having one of my therapy treatments as she was flying away to see family first time in 2 years and I couldn't risk me being the cause of her not going!
We tested this morning before leaving for England and will test again before seeing DH Granny at 94.

I will do it if asked but not to go to the shops as that's ridiculous!
I've also done so many tests the last month due to bronchitis that I think I can create a art installation!

Scottishskifun · 22/12/2021 16:37

@ratinamaze if it makes you feel better both DS and I have coughs and bad throats it's still not covid but my god the looks we get!
I actually want a neon light which says not covid to go around my neck!

ssd · 22/12/2021 17:02

There's lots of people in my work coughing and feeling awful but its not covid. I guess we forget this time of year its all coughs and colds anyway. Ive heard the cold this year is worse than covid!!!
