The railing never ends.

No resilience wankery, all railing welcome, along with good things or humorous asides.

Yes. Though our vaccine uptake is actually really good, I think?

Yes it is, particularly amongst the groups who need a vaccine (i.e. the vulnerable). Some countries have more overall but that's sometimes because they've done all children for instance, which has little impact on hospital capacity or death.
runningpink · 06/12/2021 19:40

What area of Scotland @WouldBeGood?

It kinda feels like a ticking time bomb at the moment doesn’t it

WouldBeGood · 06/12/2021 19:48

That’s exactly how it feels @runningpink.

It was Renfrewshire

Thanks! I was just being nosey!

Lockdownbear · 07/12/2021 03:39

I'm just scunnered with all of it.
I was only just coming round to the idea our ski holiday was actually happening and now it's got a big dirty cloud hanging over it.

A couple of weeks ago DH was thinking about summer holidays, I'm now thinking England, I don't want to be a month to go and have so much doubt hanging over it.

Its a real shame because so many peoples jobs are at risk in the aviation industry if they don't get passengers.

runningpink · 07/12/2021 06:58

I’m also feeling like why should I get a booster jag.

I’m young, healthy etc and I have done everything asked if me throughout lockdown etc and am still stuck not being able to do stuff and with bloody masks.

So what’s the point. They keep changing the goal posts and we’re no better off

Do you know what I mean?

I’d rather the vaccine was distributed to countries who will struggle to vaccinate people

Scottishskifun · 07/12/2021 08:24

@runningpink I know what you mean but they aren't doing that because doses go unused, they go in the bin mostly.

My way of thinking about the boosters is that it will stop me becoming seriously unwell again and therefore not add more pressure to an already strained system. So they have less excuses going forward!

I was also young fit and healthy before catching covid it is a bit of a roulette wheel unfortunately and if higher immunity from a booster reduces serious illness or long covid risk (it does truly suck) then I'm better taking it. I know they will change travel rules again too around boosters as some countries already are.

WouldBeGood · 07/12/2021 08:38

I agree @runningpink. I’m a bit old but not high risk and am triple jagged and no better off. Still supposed to mask up; self isolate; travel effectively impossible. Life still on hold.

OP posts:
runningpink · 07/12/2021 08:41

I guess I just feels like we are being told just do x,y,z but then they add on a,b,c

Surely if fully vaccinated we should have a choice as to wearing masks etc but it just feels like nothing has changed

I stupidly booked a holiday for late 2022 which I’m now regretting as I can’t see us being in any better situation with tests/vaccine/travel rules/masks so will need to cancel. My own fault for booking one I know.

Sorry I’m having a bit of a meh day can you tell!

WouldBeGood · 07/12/2021 08:50

Railing is the place for a meh day!

OP posts:
runningpink · 07/12/2021 08:53

Also want to rail that it’s too icy to run and doubt I’ll want to go out this afternoon if the storm is as bad as predicted.

I’m struggling to walk in places. How long until summer!

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 07/12/2021 08:53

I’m worried about the booster too, mainly because of the heart effects. The risk/benefit was clearer for the primary course, but now I’m vaccinated I’m not starting from scratch and as reasonably fit 40 something I don’t think I’d be badly affected. We have quite a few parent friends of similar age who’ve caught it now and it’s essentially just another virus. You can’t even say you have societal benefits because as above you are still restricted anyway.

Lockdownbear · 07/12/2021 09:06

Covid seems to be a weird thing, I did speak with someone who's taken covid months after her second jag and been in bed for a couple of days with it.

But they are saying Omincom b is milder but more spreadable than Delta.

I don't mean to be a worry wart but maybe the real fear is the next mutation will completely escape the vaccines and be more deadly.
Something just doesn't seem right to the global reaction to this, makes me think their is something they aren't telling.

ecceromani · 07/12/2021 09:07

It worries me a bit that we'll have to have another few years of doom and gloom messaging from governments.
It's becoming obvious we're going to need annual boosters for the next few years until the pandemic burns itself out.
But look at the previous uptake of the annual flu jag campaigns. I know plenty of people who were eligible, including some quite elderly, who didn't bother with it.

Yes people who want to travel will need them. But other than that I can't see us making jags compulsory (although I never thought modern day Germany would be considering it) so I think we all know how they'll get people to come forward. Doom, gloom, fear, reading out daily death tollsConfused
I don't want several more years of this messaging. And to still have the number of deaths read out on the news every evening when there are way more people dying of cancer daily feels quite heartless to me

WouldBeGood · 07/12/2021 09:18

Sometimes I worry about that too @Lockdownbear. But I did the last time too, and it was not justified. I also kind of think that if there is to be something really bad then let’s just live life to the max now!

OP posts:
Lockdownbear · 07/12/2021 09:19

What's my thoughts on compulsory jags.

Hospital and care workers are being forced into it because of their jobs.

Others are free to weigh up the odds, make their choices, gamble appropriately.

Hospital workers are the people who pick up the heavy end of the stick when people loose the gamble.

Is that really fair on Hospital workers?

Maybe the other option is if you don't take the jags then you won't be treated if you have covid.

WouldBeGood · 07/12/2021 09:26

I think compulsory jags are wrong. Medical decisions are a matter of personal choice. It’s a slippery slope. Compulsory contraception next? The state deciding what interventions you must have for the greater good? At present these decisions are made by courts and tribunals, with grave consideration, for those who lack capacity to decide on treatment for themselves. Never a decision made lightly.

The vast majority won’t end up in hospital anyway. But it would be like refusing lung cancer patients treatment if they’ve smoked. Or fat people (😳) any treatments.

I've heard that quite a few people are unwell after their booster. I've booked mine the day before I start time off for the Christmas break so feeling a bit aggrieved that I may be unwell on my own time, or possibly still doing jury duty.

@runningpink I'm a real wimp when it comes to ice. Thankfully we have the running machine in the garage so I still managed a trot this morning, but I don't go as fast as I would outside, possibly because I'm reading Mumsnet on the iPad Blush.
It is a shame though as I've been going out once a week for a run with a friend in the morning and it looks like it's going to be a long icy winter so May need to think of meeting up another way.

rookiemere · 07/12/2021 09:47

@Lockdownbear I think they simply don't know how serious omicron is, so are going in hard and fast so they can't be accused of dithering like they did with India and the Delta variant.

Maybe I'm a bit Pollyannaish, I'm strangely confident it will turn out to be a flash in the pan, not sure about the likelihood of our Feb half term French ski holiday taking place. At least this awful weather should be giving a good base on the Scottish ski slopes.

ecceromani · 07/12/2021 09:47

@rookiemere DH and I both had our boosters a few days ago. He still has a sore arm, mine is just tender but we both felt absolutely fine so hopefully you'll be fine

WouldBeGood · 07/12/2021 09:56

@rookiemere I had absolutely no ill effects after booster plus flu jag, so fingers crossed for you.

You could go to a drop in clinic and get it done before holidays, maybe??

I took DS to drop in place for his. They were doing boosters too and it was quiet

OP posts:
ElephantOfRisk · 07/12/2021 09:57

Before scientists forgot how science works, the life cycle of a virus/infectious illness was reasonably predictable. It mutates but in general each mutation whilst it might be more infectious is generally milder.

The common cold would at one point have been deadly.

It looks like covid is following a normal pattern.

rookiemere · 07/12/2021 09:59

@WouldBeGood that's a good idea about the walk in clinics. If I'm not called in for jury duty I could try on Friday when it might be a bit quieter.
Thanks @ecceromani good to know some people not feeling badly afterwards.
I think for the first two vaccines I didn't have much of an issue about feeling lousy afterwards as I felt I was doing my bit for the greater good and my personal liberty but that connection feels a bit more fragile these days and I don't fancy the idea of boosters every 3 months if I'm going to feel lousy afterwards.

mapleleavesreturn · 07/12/2021 10:08

I wish they'd stop terrifying people with the constant news catastrophising - 3 out of 4 parents are absolutely terrified of covid, and this has sent them into a horrible down-spin.

Dh has his booster booked - he was so sick after the first jab I'm waiting 3 weeks after that to get mine to make sure one of us can do things over christmas!
