The railing never ends.

No resilience wankery, all railing welcome, along with good things or humorous asides.

I want to know how she can say that its "simple arithmetic" that even a milder variant will inevitably lead to more hospitalisations, if it is more transmissible. Surely that depends on 1) how much milder it is, and 2) how much more transmissible it is?! I know we don't currently know either of those figures, but it's not a no brainer, surely?

Lockdownbear · 14/12/2021 15:07

She'll be spitting feathers the UK have removed all countries from the Red List

ElephantOfRisk · 14/12/2021 15:09

what's simple arithmetic is that the health service has been underfunded, they've made no effort to sort anything at any point during this. They spend the extra money Westminster gave for the health service on something else so we are now being restricted to reduce impact on the NHs and it's got nothing to do with how many people get omicron. Therefore, that all adds up to never getting out of restrictions. Some excuse will be made every winter to reduce people getting anything that might mean they need hospital. In the meantime the health issues other than covid that have been largely ignored are building up and building up, mental health is a disaster and once again, it will be the publics fault for daring to try to live their lives in a perfectly ordinary manner.

How exactly do people think we are getting out of this?

2022HereWeCome · 14/12/2021 15:13

My favourite bit was right at the start when the FM gave the PCR test % positivity rate and felt compelled to add that PCR test numbers were down on the average and urging people to get tested.

Doesn't take a genius to work out that perhaps people are hesitant about testing when they know it will impact on their entire household / lead to everyone in the household having to self-isolate for 10 days. Surely the experts discussed that this was a very real risk?

WouldBeGood · 14/12/2021 15:15

Good point @ElephantOfRisk. What is the long term plan/exit strategy?

OP posts:
Lockdownbear · 14/12/2021 15:22

They haven't thought about exit strategy.

England was clearly get on with living in the summer. And allowing people to build natural immunity.

ecceromani · 14/12/2021 15:26

This is what worries me going forward.
The nhs struggles every winter but now there's perfect excuse.
we will live in a 1st world country but will all have to restrict our activities and access to healthcare for other conditions in order to "save" our nhs.

Or we could decide to do what many other 1st world countries do and spends lot more per head on healthcare

Lockdownbear · 14/12/2021 15:29

We'll end up with a two teir health service, private for who want to live life and NHS creaking at the seems.

ElephantOfRisk · 14/12/2021 15:30

to be honest, a lot of the NHS is a black hole that we could keep chucking money down to no avail.

However, there has clearly been money found for all sorts of other stuff that could have helped.

It's a proper reform (with appropriate funding) that is needed, but I wouldn't trust Yousless or any of the rest of them with that.

Yes, totally! £100m to compensate hospitality for their policies, and £100m to compensate isolating people for their policies, but £0 to the NHS to build up capacity suffering as a result of their policies. Why on earth not?!

Ha! Didn't notice that. Yes... indeed. What could have caused that drop I wonder?
Lockdownbear · 14/12/2021 15:37

I do think maybe the NHS needs a complete reform but I can't work out how you do it.

WouldBeGood · 14/12/2021 15:38

You’d have to be insane to test unless unavoidable just now

MLMshouldbe legal apologies I got that one muddled up about visitors to the household 🤦🏻

Scottishskifun · 14/12/2021 15:54

Yes don't avoid testing but it's a week til Xmas.....surely most people will use lft at home if they wish rather then the current slow rate of pcr return and risk of being told thou shalt not leave your house!

To say they don't work on symptoms is also not true they definitely can pick up cases with symptoms as well as post virus!

OnceUponAWhine · 14/12/2021 16:01

@WouldBeGood

Good point *@ElephantOfRisk*. What is the long term plan/exit strategy?
One could say that covid winter 2021 ‘insert name of variant’ is one mother of a NHS crisis squirrel.

There is no end date. It’s up to us to create our own exit strategy based on our own personal circumstances and health. We are grown ups after all.

runningpink · 14/12/2021 16:29

Did she say when the next update is scheduled for?

Wonder if we don’t behave and comply even though it’s not a legal requirement if she will use that as a reason to make things legal at a later date and blame us for being naughty kids.

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 14/12/2021 16:52

I've just seen on another thread she's speaking live just before the 6 o'clock news.

That will just top off the absolute stinker of a day I have had

It’s all been said today. Everyone can catch up with the TV news or on social media. Absolutely no need for a special edition of the Nicola show.
IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 14/12/2021 17:05

Oh I agree @OnceUponAWhine just have the fear now she's been given money.

Lockdownbear · 14/12/2021 17:13

Definitely no need for two editions of Nicola show in one day. She'll wear out her soap box.

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 14/12/2021 17:18

Surely short of a full reintroduction of the furlough scheme she is incredibly limited in how much further she can go?

More bitching about the tories? One can only hope that's all it is

mapleleavesreturn · 14/12/2021 17:21

It'll be a damp squib surely? The main beef hopefully was earlier

rookiemere · 14/12/2021 17:45

I just contacted my friends to check they were still ok to come round for drinks on Friday ( only 5 of us and we can space out in the living room).
One is coming despite a logistical challenge purely to spite Ms Sturgeon Grin.

ElephantOfRisk · 14/12/2021 18:11

I think we are all getting by on spite, thrawn-ness and sheer bloody minded=ness.
