How rubbish for you @Scottishskifun . I hope you're feeling better very soon.

Scottishskifun · 28/11/2021 21:04

I'm railing against the SG failure to even acknowledge what's going on in the North East! Its taken them over 48 hours to put out on twitter that they have met with a power companies and its a sad situation.....

2 days in freezing temperatures with no heating, electricity and for many water. It's not like its one place its thousands of homes including where I live we are lucky as other than a few power cuts it's come back on but many are not.
DH has been helping where he can with hot water bottles, flasks etc but given a emergency situation has been declared by the police no idea why its taken that long for any sort of statement!

Can't help feeling if we lived in a more SNP area then it would have been straight away assistance and statement. But once again being ignored. The communities and businesses are rallying around where they can.

The power companies have been working tirelessly in very challenging conditions but we are talking thousands of families and another night down to -5 in places!

ElephantOfRisk · 28/11/2021 21:19

There are still people with no power in Stirlingshire too. They've managed to open some schools in the area to offer hot meals and the like and have also organised transport to get people there but that has been two days people have been without power and as you say, it's bitterly cold.

There are a number of schools not opening tomorrow - some that still have no power and others because they are no aid stations.

Scottishskifun · 28/11/2021 21:32

@elephantofrisk yep it's disgusting!
Schools here are shut next 2 days as well.....
Screenshot of the pathetic message yet NS was happily on Andrew Marr programme this morning!
5.50pm they put anything out on it bloody disgraceful!

Do you actually really think that?

WouldBeGood · 28/11/2021 21:39

Even the SNP can’t control the weather

OP posts:
Scottishskifun · 28/11/2021 21:41

Yes it's taken 48 hours to say anything and then it's hold a meeting......
They have been preoccupied with a online conference and ignoring thousands of people who are spending a 3rd night in their houses with no power and no heating!

There is one centre set up and businesses have been opening their doors for hot showers, care homes have had to put social media requests for hot food and generators...... Their 3rd night in sub zero outside.
If this had been elsewhere in the country would it really take them this long to release 1 statement.....

Scottishskifun · 28/11/2021 21:42

No but they can help support in the aftermath of such events. There has been nothing from them.
ElephantOfRisk · 28/11/2021 21:42

I used to work for a power company back in the day. This is actually a highly unusual situation as far as I have experience of. Normally when power supplies are affected by a storm, the delay in restoration is usually because the storm is still raging and staff just can't get to fix it or it's pointless as could be knocked out again 5 minutes later. However this was a relatively short storm and it's been calm (as far as I can tell) since Saturday morning. And yet there are 100s of ongoing outages and people without power when there has been 2 full days in which to complete repairs. It must either be a people or parts issue?

Scottishskifun · 28/11/2021 21:45

@elephantofrisk they are saying its the level of damage. There are so many trees down.
The latest update for this area was 6pm aim to get back on its now changed to tomorrow at 10pm so potentially a 4th night.

WouldBeGood · 28/11/2021 21:48

Anyway, I hate everything today so I shouldn’t comment

OP posts:
ElephantOfRisk · 28/11/2021 21:49

So effectively 100s of small incidents rather than main lines coming down affecting huge numbers but more easily restored? The council Facebook page is having to keep asking people for their post codes to work out who is affected and it's just this evening that they've set up the emergency facilities. I think there has been a lack of communication to identify and report where there are outages.

Scottishskifun · 28/11/2021 21:55

@elephantofrisk they are saying its due to complexity of the situation, roads are still being cleared but also there is severe damage to multiple parts including now a underground cable system in one town.

If anyone wants to get a understanding of exactly how bad the situation is follow Fubar news on Facebook and get a taste of the pleas which are coming!
Families can't check on family the phone lines and mobile masts are down too.

Aurea · 28/11/2021 21:57

I'm in the same area as Scottish Ski Fun but have escaped relatively unscathed - no internet or phone for a couple of days plus low water pressure.

There are thousands and thousands of people in surrounding towns and villages with no heat, power or water and sub zero temperatures outside.

I didn't appreciate the extent of the carnage until the internet was back on and I could read the news.

Petrol pumps also don't function without power, so those without enough fuel in their tanks to travel to refuel are scuppered. It's an absolute nightmare and makes me worry about the future with no fossil fuels and everything replying on electricity, including water which is pumped with electricity.

ElephantOfRisk · 28/11/2021 22:00

This site is showing the current outages:

Scottishskifun · 28/11/2021 22:07

@Aurea my phone signal remained amazingly and we also got off lightly and have a wood burner but many friends are not so lucky!
Our friends are in our campervan on their drive as it has heating in it and cooking facilities but it's bonkers that the whole issue in the North East seems to have been largely been ignored.

NS did have time yesterday to tweet yesterday about a article in the national and to congratulate the curling team Hmm

RunLassieRun · 28/11/2021 22:11

The need to remove fallen trees has meant that accessing the faults has taken longer. They're doing all they can.

I don't anyone has suggested that they aren't? It's the lack of other provision provided for people and the lack of publicity and the lack of acknowledgement by scot gov that people are unhappy with.

I know the power company is doing as much as they can and people are working around the clock to clear trees etc

It's the lack of support and it took so long for 1 tweet to come out.
This isn't a area with lots of big hotels that can put people up etc. The local ones there are many also have no power.

alicesfavouritepen · 28/11/2021 22:22

What's the tweet going to do? Start the power back up?

WouldBeGood · 28/11/2021 22:24

We are so lucky to live in a country where we take these things for granted. Yes, it’s a total fucker to have no power. But I guess it will be back soon.

How about acknowledging what's going on, looking at options including requesting assistance from the army, sending support food, water. A action plan to set up warm locations or checks on the vulnerable....

Not a pathetic tweet to say they have had a meeting 2 days after!
Its the worst that some power companies have seen for 30 years...... Yet SG has been silent.

WouldBeGood · 28/11/2021 22:30

They have been busy with their very important conference @Scottishskifun 🤣

OP posts:

I can remember our boiler breaking and being without heating/hot water for about 12 hours and finding that bad enough. And we still had access to electricity (could put the oven on and open the door) and could cook, watch tv etc

I guess potentially some might have gas hobs and matches or coal fires but many might have nothing. I'm presuming some gas boilers won't work if they have an electric pilot light?
