I'm in the car reading a few threads where folks are fed up with the misery and fighting so thought I'd start a new thread. Not for politics or covid or fighting , just general stuff 🙂

I've had a nice day, off work on hols so we took a wee drive down to Peebles and had lunch, bought a few pies from lovely butcher and now heading home.

I had planned to go for a run after work today. It was so wet that I decided to leave it, then it stopped, so now I feel guilty.

But also having wine, so it's ok.

@ElephantOfRisk

My brother died when he was 42, not long after we lost my dad (67), my Brother in law (44) and Mother in law (70). Many more lost since that couple of years.

It's hard but I've accepted that there was nothing I could do and they are gone.

A short while after this my work engaged a program called "my best year yet" where basically you looked at a few things that you wanted to improve in your life and pared up with a colleague and came up with a list of goals to either achieve or improve the things you wanted to.

It sounds really cheesy, but it did make me take proper stock of things and I did improve my life. We actually ended up switching partners quick quickly when we realised that there were better matches. One of my things was that we were struggling to conceive and I was not great with Doctors etc. This made me actually go to the GP and get help. Other smaller things too. Other bloke wanted to improve his relationship with his daughter, another thing was wanting to learn to cook so lots of different things.

I guess what it did was make you focus on things that were important and also things that you are able to change.

So in your case @ssd, maybe listing a few of those things and steps you could take to change them would help you feel more positive?

I.e. you hate your job and feel undervalued - you could think about what transferrable skills you have and start applying for something else. One thing I learned was that women tend to only apply for jobs they are already qualified to do, whereas men will apply for jobs where they meet some of the criteria and this is generally a successful.
Or you are worried about your health and that of your family. You can't predict or protect from eeverything but you can take steps to keep yourself fit and have a decent diet. Money, maybe looking for jobs will help with this or you could think about other ways to earn.

I dunno, don't want to make it sound simple as it isn't and I know how it is to feel in a big hole. I guess what I am saying is that thinking about and doing very small achievable steps can make you feel better in themselves as you feel you are taking some level of charge over things that you can. It can make all the things that you have no control over recede a little. Write it down, tick it off. Always good to put down a couple of things you've already done as it's good to be able to put some ticks down straight away :o

What a brilliant, thought provoking post. Thanks @ElephantOfRisk

Sorry to everyone feeling flat. We were talking about this at work this week. Seems to be widespread. Combination of so many factors, as noted below, and it's difficult sometimes to see light at the end of the tunnel.

Big virtual hugs to anyone who needs them.

Also reading @prettybird post has reminded me I have an old Jillian Michaels dvd. I should really dig it out!

I live in a town where everything is for show. I used to be jealous of those with the brand new houses, Audis & BMWs and holidays to Dubai and Florida. Now I've realised that I wouldn't want any of those things and am quite happy with my little house (that's all paid for), my reasonable car and holidays to places that I like.

What I didn't realise when I was younger was that these people didn't actually own anything - they had huge mortgages, car loans and credit card bills. My late dad's voice used to come into my head saying, "Never buy anything you can't afford to pay for".

Each to their own. If that's how they want to live their lives, that's fine, but it's not for me.

Scottishskifun · 30/10/2021 18:00

@rararachael 😂 live in the North East by any chance?!
I'm exactly the same in fact I got the piss taken out of me at an old job for my car but it was my car!
It's changed quite a bit with the oil crash I hope it doesn't come back to the level it did there definitely seems like less audis/jags/bmws when on the rare occasion I travel into Aberdeen these days!

dementedpixie · 30/10/2021 18:17

I went a wee bit crazy and hoovered downstairs today. Threw out lots of boxes that we had kept for no reason as well (shoe boxes, headphone boxes, etc). My paper bin is now nearly full

I'm going to take the hoover upstairs to try and encourage me to do upstairs tomorrow.

Takeaway ordered for dinner and then it'll be time for a wee drink to wash it down

GrouchyKiwi · 30/10/2021 18:26

I have had a Sit On The Sofa Day today. I had such good plans too. Too tired, however, and now my legs have decided to act like I'm walking through treacle so I shall now have a Sit On The Sofa Evening too.

We're having a family viewing of SCD. We've got a scoreboard drawn up on the whiteboard, and the children all have score paddles they made a few weeks ago. DH bought some fun treats.

Someone has just set off fireworks close to the house and the dog is not happy. Usually she doesn't care, but I wonder if she's feeling a bit fragile after her surgery a month ago. I hate fireworks season.

prettybird · 30/10/2021 19:04

I run a wee FB group of friends, friends of friends and old work colleague (about 140 like minded people) called "Strictly BitchPod". Name is pretty self-explanatory Grin

The stream of consciousness from the articulate bunch of BitchPodders is now as much fun if not more Wink as the show itself Grin

GrouchyKiwi · 30/10/2021 19:11

That sounds fun prettybird. Grin I love the threads on here for similar reasons.

Well... ok so apart for the bloody deep fried Mars bar (for gods sake). No tattie scones, salmon, venison... I’m pleased that had cranachan (my absolute favourite). My American BIL declared that irn bru was liquidised bubble gum. But then he put jam on fried bread, drank squash neat and almost drank himself to death on tenants super larger (handnt ever had beer so strong)

WouldBeGood · 30/10/2021 19:32

I’m leaning towards thinking cheese might be a good addition to a roll and square sausage 😳

KittenKong · 30/10/2021 19:32

I was wondering where cheese and oatcakes were! At least she didn’t suggest bacon on everything!

Haha well it's not too different to a mac Donald's breakfast muffin that way!

DH years ago had some corporate tickets to the rugby which included a pre match lunch. It was stereotypical "scottish" Cullen skink, haggis and included a deep fried Mars bar with irn bru ice-cream. He said it was a shame that they hadn't shown some of the amazing less stereotyped foods!

My favourite scottish food is langoustines done with some butter can't get better!

10/10 would recommend 👌🏻
ISpyCobraKai · 30/10/2021 21:00

I love that video!
I feel that since its Glasgow they should gave also given them a munchy box Grin
If it wasn't for the fact that I'm a tad skint I'd be phoning for one now!

prettybird · 30/10/2021 21:38

Stornaway black pudding with Scottish scallops and Ayrshire bacon. Yum! Smile

Scottishskifun · 30/10/2021 21:46

😂 Spitting image tonight is hilarious and includes some COP26 with Scottish jokes and brexit jokes later just to balance it out!

RaraRachael · 30/10/2021 22:43

Scottishskifun I am indeed in ths north east Smile. I believe my town has one of the highest percentage of personalised number plates too. They're actually very handy when you want to identify a culprit for bad driving.

Ha! I'm amazing @Scottishskifun got that. When I read your OP that felt like it could be anywhere in Scotland 😂
Scottishskifun · 31/10/2021 07:01

😂 @PoloMintPatty it's the cars along with holiday location (plus I live here too so recognise the traits). Until I moved to the North East I didn't know many people who chose to regularly go to Dubai on holiday but its pretty common here along with Florida in October holidays.

RaraRachael · 31/10/2021 09:55

That's Dubai pronounced with a J - "I'd a lovely time in Jubai (whilst namedropping all the expensive places they'd shopped which mean nothing to me!)

There are lots of people who have never lived anywhere else and couldn't imagine doing so. Most of their lifestyle funded by oil. Not quite sure what they'll do when the arse falls out of that.

GrouchyKiwi · 31/10/2021 09:59

Miserable weather again today. Wonder if it will clear up for guising later. I'm probably going to leave a tub of sweets on the porch for any guisers so I don't have to open the door. And it will stop the dog going crazy every couple of minutes.

We were supposed to be looking after a friend's children today so were up early (for once the clock change was helpful!) and ready for that, but now they're not coming. I feel like I have a lot of time today!

Scottishskifun · 31/10/2021 10:24

@rararachael 😂 exactly that! Our town thankfully has more of a balance more NHS workers than oil but there are still a few which have the same showy attitude (obviously not all are like this DH definitely wasn't!).
DH had a few redundancies from oil so retrained thankfully but so many went through one crash only to go back to their old ways as soon as it picked up a bit!

I don't know what will happen up here so many houses are in negative equity now because they paid ridiculous prices! I hope they are serious about shifting it to renewable from now, so far all I have seen is a lot of chat and few jobs!
