Ah, herself too, @ElephantOfRisk? It’s not inspiring confidence

OP posts:
LizzieMacQueen · 20/09/2021 15:14

@Groovee yes, obviously a bit more to this story.

I hope they can heal whatever has gone wrong without the scrutiny of the press or anonymous bods (like me) on the internet.

WouldBeGood · 20/09/2021 15:15

That is strange @Groovee.

OP posts:
ssd · 20/09/2021 18:07

Very strange. Wee soul.

Lockdownbear · 21/09/2021 00:00

Found you, I wondered why railing dropped of my 'recent button'

The wee boy is weird as anything police searched the loft 2 twice before bringing specialist equipment in to find him in a space no adults could reach.
Wee guy just glad he's found.

After all the hoo haa about free music tuition in schools I assumed the instruments would be borrowed from school, no you have to hire them independently.
Something to be said for sticking with teaching the whole class recorder, squeaky but cheap.

WouldBeGood · 21/09/2021 10:47

It’s all quite depressing @Lockdownbear

But our dear leader is addressing parliament today with a Covid iodate, so that should cheer us all up!

Update even 🙄

OP posts:
Lockdownbear · 21/09/2021 11:42

Just super school letting restrictions to remain until mid October, I am doubting that they will change then.

Scottishskifun · 21/09/2021 15:28

I couldn't face watching the parliament update from NS but had a quick skim read through....
Spotted its accepted that testing restrictions on travellers would be a economic hit as people would just go via England...... So now it's who wins out JL or NS!

I still don't get the argument that it picks up variants given less than 5% are genome sequenced and if lft are good enough for testing NHS, children, teachers on a regular basis then why are they suddenly not sufficient for getting off a plane..... 🙄 You would still get a PCR test if it was positive and that can be genome sequenced!

ElephantOfRisk · 21/09/2021 15:47

You are making the mistake of trying to introduce logic @Scottishskifun

You can't do that as it drives you mental.

WouldBeGood · 21/09/2021 16:33

Surely now they’ll stop this vaccine passport rubbish? They’ve conceded it’s impractical for big events anyway

OP posts:
ssd · 21/09/2021 18:41

The people that would need to check the vaccine passports would be 20 yr olds earning minimum wage doing security at big events. Its a stupid concept really.

mapleleavesreturn · 21/09/2021 19:10

Yes but remember the important thing is to be seen to be taking control and creating a climate of fear-based compliance. the whole lot of gubbins since day 1 has been the same, I'd love to know how many people were fined etc for breaking the '5 mile rule' - vaccine passports just more of the same.

WouldBeGood · 21/09/2021 19:10

Probably unvaccinated too @ssd!

Back to Uni contact time, DS1 has started year 4 of his 5 year integrated masters in Computer science. I said earlier that he is getting 2 hours a fortnight Face to face. Have now spoken to him to see what else he has and it's 2 hours on a Tuesday and 2 hours on a Thursday, both on-line. So effectively 5 hours a week. Is that normal?

mapleleavesreturn · 21/09/2021 19:54

Seems a bit low? I did history back in the day which is low contact hours and that was 4 x 1 hr lectures and 4 x 1 hr classes per week.

Do they issue degree handbooks anymore? It usually specifies...I imagine they're electronic these days. There's no dinosaur emoji on mumsnet for me!

Aurea · 21/09/2021 20:02

Elephant

May I ask which uni your DC is studying at?

My DC will be applying for Compsci in 2023 and it's useful to know which unis have offered better teaching provision during covid times.

Thanks!

I have no idea, I never went to Uni so it's all a bit of a mystery still. I'm sure he'll have work to do when not actually attending but it just doesn't seem very much. He's only got 4 subjects (2 per term) so I guess that's 2 hours online for each and an hour for labs every 2nd week for each maybe?
sartorius · 21/09/2021 20:12

Does sound quite low @ElephantOfRisk
However is this is 4th yr of an honours degree (so final yr for some) ?
There would probably be a big self directed project in honours year.
Obviously for your son it's not his final year as he has masters year still to do.

I've no idea if that's how his course is set up!
Just an thought🤷🏼‍♀️

No this is low but comp science usually has a major project piece which is supposed to be group work. From friends taking it years ago it was about 10-15 hours teaching time and then workshops/coding sessions etc.
ElephantOfRisk · 21/09/2021 20:17

Not sure sartorius, it might also not be being run in the same way as normal either I guess. He's not complaining and is generally doing really well academically but he needs to find a placement for next summer and that might be more of a challenge as he has social anxiety and has at times been completely unable to speak. He'd make a good employee, being conscientious, bright, hard working, honest and diligent. He just needs to get past interviews and show what he can do.

ElephantOfRisk · 21/09/2021 20:19

His big project piece is in 5th year as far as I know.

ElephantOfRisk · 21/09/2021 20:21

Just looked at the course on the website and he has an individual project to do this year, and group one next year.

WouldBeGood · 21/09/2021 21:10

Looks like the yes movement is really dying, with the rally of a few people at the weekend, and the empty Queen’s Hall debate

OP posts:
ElephantOfRisk · 21/09/2021 21:18

I hope so, the polls just haven't changed significantly since 2014 and are currently pretty much the same as the result of the referendum.

Despite all these significant things that they keep saying have strengthened the case.

If they'd actually run the country properly they wouldn't have had a problem getting the vote so, they can blame everyone else but the blame for the lack of progress is entirely on them.

The reality is that aside from Sturgeon, they just aren't very bright or have very little actual life experience, i mean Yousless getting to where he's got just sums it up.
