Something from another country for snack that you like - now that would've been fun. My world kitchen is great for learning about food from around the world.

I know, I'm curmudgeonly. My heart sank about the lack of thought about European culture when I got the email about yet more flag stuff.

ElephantOfRisk · 18/09/2021 14:56

My Dc and I were lucky enough to go on a trip to Italy with school where they attended lessons and went on a few school trips with classes. They were most fascinated by the lunch where they all sat at tables in classes with the teacher for lunch and that the teacher stayed with the class all the primary years, it was lovely to see how affectionate they were to each other. They taught each other games and as it was the end of March and roasting by our standards, the italian DC were amazed at all the scottish kids being in shorts and t-shirts and going to the beach and in the sea while they were still in winter coats Grin . Us parents were in summer frocks and sandals (apart from the dads).

No flags were involved at any point!

mapleleavesreturn · 18/09/2021 15:26

Sounds lovely! I did a few Spanish exchanges at secondary, no flag identifying there either.

forfucksakenett · 18/09/2021 17:39

Flags aren't particularly political I'd say and are the simplest representation of culture I suppose apart from maybe food?

If you are offended by flags then you're offended and that's fair enough I suppose 🤷🏻‍♀️

mapleleavesreturn · 18/09/2021 17:44

Flags were the 19th c answer to international socialism, to stop the working classes uniting against the ruling classes. Quite deliberately political distraction.

I agree flag day isn't quite on a par with afghan girls being barred from secondary school.

mapleleavesreturn · 18/09/2021 17:45

My point is they aren't authentic culture - at best an example of top-down manipulation.

StarryEyeSurprise · 18/09/2021 18:34

Has the class teacher sent on her daily plan? If not, you don't know what they have planned for that day. They could well be looking at food, festivals, history, music etc.

Groovee · 18/09/2021 19:19

@Iwantthesummersun

Positive Oct through this morning for DD. Hubby and I both negative. She’s now pretty down as the reality of what she is missing has hit home. Reading the email, I would say she definitely had symptoms on Thursday night (stupidly didn’t pick up on it) so her release day will be a week on Sunday. It said symptom day plus 9 whole days after. She’s had a cold on and off for three weeks now. I can’t say it didn’t cross my mind for a second to pretend it hadn’t happened but she’s as honest as the day is long so couldn’t have lied. More importantly though, I’m a teacher and would be absolutely furious if a parent in my class covered up a positive. I have to hold myself to the same standards.
Aww that sucks. Hope she's not too poorly.
Groovee · 18/09/2021 19:24

I'm in Stranraer (Edin sept weekend) and a family member who lives here's birthday. It's all been so normal. Went out for dinner and it was lovely food. Busy too. Had a wee walk along the harbour. In our guest house for the night. Which is just lovely.

Scottishskifun · 18/09/2021 21:53

@groovee so glad to hear you've had a great time you definitely deserved a well earned break!

Thank you. It is really lovely down here.

titsintiers · 19/09/2021 08:10

Glad you're having a lovely time @Groovee as @Scottishskifun says you most definitely deserve it.

Railing about the September weekend next week, it's a massive pita holiday wise.

Scottishskifun · 19/09/2021 15:49

I'm railing today still about the state of lack of long covid support in Scotland despite numerous statements in Parliament! Not really for me anymore I gave up on that a long time ago but for others who can't afford private treatment.

With the BBC article today about GPs double workload and current issues (before I get the whole but it's come from a Tory msp..... He's still also working as a GP so knows exactly what's going on way more than the SG I would say!) it's a mess.
Add on that long covid sufferers should go to their GPs and handled that way according to the SG and its all a massive mess with everything at breaking point! Not to mention that if they hadn't insisted on GP route for everything long covid related then actually there would be more GP time to deal with other critical issues too

That's just awful. So many people are suffering. In Edinburgh we have the Thistle Foundation who seem to be offering support. They supported me when I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
mapleleavesreturn · 19/09/2021 17:52

It is really strange that it's all via GP, surely that would make sense for ongoing support after initial investigations but GPS must be despairing.

WouldBeGood · 19/09/2021 18:18

In good news (though no help to you @Scottishskifun) a study by the ONS has demonstrated that long Covid is much less common than previously feared.

Glad you had a good time @Groovee!

Not been to Stranraer for years, despite living in D&G for many years.

You get referrals if serious issues to respiratory, cardiac or neurology but if they come back normal (many do despite the crazy symptoms) it's back to the GP to try and get support with "non hospital" issues. So it's a constant merry go round and it takes up a lot of GP time. I have a review each month which takes up an appointment for them to tell me that they still don't have any answers or know what to do and to keep doing what I'm doing..... I stretched them to every 2-3 months as to me it seemed pretty pointless and I was wasting a appointment.

@WouldBeGood yes it's great news and I have improved a lot with the regular therapies I'm having. Just wish they would set up proper support and take the stress off GPs with it! GPs have been crying out for support and referral options for 18 months it just seems to have fallen on deaf ears with SG! £1 Mill per health board isn't going to touch the sides of all the issues with it!

DS now has a cough secondary to the non Covid cold. Dilemma! Should I keep him off? Will teachers not want a coughing pupil in?

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 20/09/2021 07:56

Keeping him off, because he’s fearful of being shunned! And coughing etc very unpleasant with mask on.

OP posts:
mapleleavesreturn · 20/09/2021 08:12

Probably a good call, coughing with a mask on is definitely not a fun experience.

Have woken up with horrible headache here.

WouldBeGood · 20/09/2021 08:16

Oh no, @mapleleavesreturn. Hope it eases soon

I definitely agree with your decision to keep him off but as a teacher I would not bat an eyelid at a coughing child. My two have been coughing for a month now.

Just seen there's a wee boy been missing overnight in Ayrshire. It's just your worst nightmare.

Lidlfix · 20/09/2021 08:24

I was the cougher in my classroom with my not covid cold recently. I got lots of evil stares and was constantly trying to reassure pupils I had been for a PCR. I don't recommend it.

WouldBeGood · 20/09/2021 08:36

That sounds miserable @Lidlfix.

I’m pleased I’ve made the right call. He really needs to go in tomorrow as he has a maths assessment.. fingers crossed
