Where there's a rule there are loop holes!

I've long thought a progressive anti conservative alliance would make sense in seats in England but really Labour should be able to win.

I've quite never understood why people on the left buy that the SNP would be even better at being a left wing party under independence - they're most like new Labour, after every trendy idea along with some good ones, and they're benefiting from much better financial transfers than rUK and it's still a shambles.

Lockdownbear · 29/09/2021 17:22

I'm also politically homeless voted tory as they had best chance of getting SNP out in our area.

I honestly can't see the benefit of Scotland being independent.
While I voted to stay in Europe, I hope that the current shortage of people in certain industries will help to drive wages in those sectors up.

I don't necessarily agree with forcing the NMW up as I think I creates a false bottom, we need a bit of scope for truck company A is paying a £1 more than B, so B raises their rates by £1.50 and the same in nursing homes let the free market raise the rates.

mapleleavesreturn · 29/09/2021 17:23

ssd I know your argument wasn't that the snp would be better under indy but that the entire political landscape would be better.

shouldistop · 29/09/2021 17:31

Baby ds is worse and now has a temperature. I'm not willing to try and fit those swabs up his tiny nose so I guess dh and I will have to test. Ds1 seems fine.

mapleleavesreturn · 29/09/2021 17:42

Oh no should, how awful, so sorry to hear that.

sartorius · 29/09/2021 17:50

@shouldistop there's a horrible cold doing the rounds.
Mine have it this week, Covid test negative.
In all likelihood that's what baby son has, poor wee thing

shouldistop · 29/09/2021 17:54

It most likely is just that but I feel bad about ds1 going to school incase it's Covid.

WouldBeGood · 29/09/2021 17:56

Oh, what a shame @shouldistop.

@titsintiers

How's your holiday going *@Scottishskifun*? It's getting chilly here now
It's been amazing so far, boat trip tomorrow, the breeze cools you down a bit in the middle of the day as its still hitting 27-29 degrees DS is loving it although he only wants to go swimming. DH has a watersports session booked for Friday which he's looking forward to! Its so worth the effort! Will probably be swearing at the PLF for returning at the weekend but at the moment it's endless greek salads, grilled fish and watermelon in the sun!
shouldistop · 29/09/2021 18:18

@Scottishskifun that sounds amazing!

Scottishskifun · 29/09/2021 18:19

I also hate brexit but found one plus side...... Full on duty free when you fly! Suddenly a litre of gin is £10!

ssd · 29/09/2021 18:20

I'm politically homeless too. I'm not so much pro independence as finding the thought of years of right wing tory government unbearable. I cant see how independence would be worse.

Scottishskifun · 29/09/2021 18:23

@shouldistop

Baby ds is worse and now has a temperature. I'm not willing to try and fit those swabs up his tiny nose so I guess dh and I will have to test. Ds1 seems fine.
This is what we do now with any symptoms DS has as he's terrified of the swabs now! We are a bit cheeky with Dr consultation if we need it and simply put a single line of covid tests conducted and negative without specifying..... But I get so fed up at the refusal to see them unless you state it last time it was because DS had a cough for 3 weeks which is well beyond covid time!
Scottishskifun · 29/09/2021 18:27

It's the cost of it all which is way worse to me! A hard border which would be required and confirmed by the SNP throws supply chain into chaos including food costs!

There is no way to pay for it other than raising taxes more either so we will all pay more, everything cost more and my pensions are likely to be screwed up for pretty much zero benefit when the SNP have shown time and time and time again that they can't even get the basics that they are in charge of right now.

It would be very different to me if they had a great success record but frankly everything they seem to be in charge of turns out to be a shit show mess! I really don't fancy giving them anymore power or something important like a divorce settlement from Westminster!

ssd · 29/09/2021 18:40

I guess I'm hoping we get independence and someone fantastic appears and creates a forward thinking party that looks after society from top to bottom. Especially the bottom. I don't mind raised taxes if they are spent properly.
I'm hopefully our young people rise up. And get the chance to rise up. I'm from a Glasgow scheme, left school at 15. University was for the well off, not the likes of me. My ds has just got a first class politics masters. I hope the future is in hands like his.

WouldBeGood · 29/09/2021 19:07

But there will be limits @Scottishskifun. No more filling my car with cheap wine…

WouldBeGood · 29/09/2021 19:09

And @ElephantOfRisknis correct: most of the day to day decisions which are ruining the country are in the hands of the SNP. So a change of government in Scotland is much more critical.

Scottishskifun · 29/09/2021 19:15

@ssd well done to your DS (and you).

I think it's more likely to go the other way as cost of living will rise putting people worse off for the basics. We simply don't produce enough of our own food ranges for instance. Hard border with England makes food costs go up, Spain were very clear about veto to fast EU membership so that's not an option either.

Many businesses either can't afford to match wage increase requirements or the big multi nationals will simply relocate where they don't have to which then takes away a lot of higher earnings to be taxed (several stated this last time)
Scotland has on average a lower proportion of taxable people so it will squeeze the working majority quite majorly.

I don't want 15 years of economic issues for my family whilst it sorts itself out, I'm already of the generation which had the financial crash making employment difficult and freezes on recruitment. Then 4 redundancies for DH due to oil price crash before he retrained.
I love living in Scotland but we are unlikely to stay in those circumstances and we wouldn't be the only ones which again takes away even more of the tax paying population and squeezes the rest!

ElephantOfRisk · 29/09/2021 19:20

If they had a good record of running the country, independence would have just been something that we naturally drifted towards, more and more would have been devolved until the point that it just made sense.

Unfortunately they have presided over failure after failure and caused nothing but antagonism between people, polarising the population probably forever whilst continually placing the blame (mostly unfoundedly) on someone else. There is no talent, no integrity, no honesty and pretty much nothing of worth in any of the party.

It's also worth remembering that people of many backgrounds voted for brexit, including many SNP supporters and many in Scotland. In retrospect there should have been more than a simple majority to take such a decision. You could have held the same thing 6 months earlier or later and had a different result. That should be noted for any Scexit vote.

Aww hope he's on the mend. It's awful when they are so wee x
Groovee · 29/09/2021 20:08

@Scottishskifun that sounds bliss

ssd · 29/09/2021 20:14

Yes i hear what you are all saying with regards independence. Its depressing all round.

ssd · 29/09/2021 20:16

I'm railing against James Bond. Not interested in the slightest. Never fancied Daniel Craig. Dont like anything to do with it all, its outdated crap. And getting shoved in our faces.

titsintiers · 29/09/2021 20:22

Yay for holidays @Scottishskifun it sounds magical.

I couldn't give a toss about James Bond either @ssd but I think that the Duchess of Cambridge looked absolutely stunning last night (not a royalist or republican btw, just love a nice dress)

I think we should stop saying scexit, it's a grim word and is making me feel quite queasy.

sartorius · 29/09/2021 20:27

I love James Bond
@ssd well done to your son, that's fantastic
