It's worrying - co worker in north England has used their last petrol to take their sick dog to the vets. I really hope it is resolved soon.

rookiemere · 28/09/2021 11:44

For the fuel situation I feel it would have been better if petrol stations had applied a £30 cap for each vehicle and barred filling of Jerry cans.
Too late now I suppose. Apparently we have two Jerry cans in the garage with 20 year old unleaded petrol am thinking we should empty them and sell the cans on eBay.

ElephantOfRisk · 28/09/2021 11:52

if people just return to normal fuel filling behaviours, we won't need any sort of priority list. Just stop filling cans and topping up every time you see a petrol station would be a start.

DH is hoping for a rainy weekend as the grass needs it hopefully last cut but he needs to get petrol for it and doesn't want to rock up with his can like a twat.

I normally fill at a quarter tank. I still have 3 quarters, i work from home so just local journies required for shopping etc so I'm not buying any and hopefully it will be back to normal in a few days and I'll fill up in a couple of weeks.

I do understand how people get sucked into it when it starts though as they want to get to work and if others have started panic buying you end up doing the same as the shortage has been created.

ElephantOfRisk · 28/09/2021 11:56

We've just swapped our car and new one probably has less in it than the old one did, but new car away to get polished and coated for a few days so will deal with that when we get it back. DH is NHS and obviously needs to get to work so is using my car anyway as planned but It will still have enough to last a couple of weeks I think, as long as no-one suddenly needs to do a long journey.

shouldistop · 28/09/2021 11:58

@ElephantOfRisk it's a vicious circle isn't it. We hardly ever use our cars. No idea how much fuel is actually in them. We're a 5 minute walk from a train station, 5 minute walk from the school, 5 minute walk from the library and 20 minutes from David Lloyd and that's the only places we go except the supermarket I suppose.

Scottishskifun · 28/09/2021 12:05

The fuel shortage is ridiculous and caused by media reporting and people panic buying! There would be plenty if people stopped acting like bloody idiots!

ElephantOfRisk · 28/09/2021 12:11

Unless people are filling the bath or keeping lots and lots of jerry cans in their shed/garage/house (for which I'd negate their house insurance personally) then there is actually only so much petrol that can be in active use in cars. As long as people don't keep coming back and topping up by £2.50 and causing queues and starting more panics when people see the queue, then as supplies are actually pretty normal, in a couple of days the idiots will still have full-ish tanks and everyone else can return to normal regardless of whether that is filling up every day or so as they are a heavy user or more like me where it's every month or so.

ElephantOfRisk · 28/09/2021 12:12

for the vast majority a £30 limit will be fine.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 28/09/2021 13:49

Was passing a quiet filling station and filled up as I was nearly down to the quarter (where I usually fill up). Restricted to 22 litres (just under £30) which is fine by me. It'll do me for long enough.

WouldBeGood · 28/09/2021 13:52

Can’t be arsed with £30 of fuel! Filled mine the other day and it was £75. I drive about a lot!

If they are going to ration fuel it makes more sense to do by quantity rather than trying to do it on occupational need.

shouldistop · 28/09/2021 14:22

@Lockdownbear that's true. I don't think there needs to be nationwide rationing though, it will calm down in a couple of days.

Lockdownbear · 28/09/2021 14:32

I think it will calm down too.

Did anyone catch it on the news an estimated 1m people hold HGV licences who don't actually use them.
So they need to find ways to attract those people back into trucking - probably pay more money and help get them insurance.

I can certainly see how not having an influx of cheap labour can improve pay and conditions for UK workers.

The care sector included those people deserve better money than NMW.

ElephantOfRisk · 28/09/2021 14:51

Truck drivers have definitely not been treated well, especially during covid, i'm not surprised that many dropped out of the job.

If anything this situation has taught us, it is that pretty much all jobs are valuable to society and workers should be better looked after.

We all have a role to play and the key thing is getting people who are disenfranchised into jobs or training and it would help with lots of stuff, mental health for one, a better economy for another and a sense of self worth and higher self esteem for another.

That's what we should be looking at and a more engaged and occupied population would also help the NHS

Lockdownbear · 28/09/2021 14:57

Truck drivers were a second thought during covid, esp during the first lockdown when cafes and service places closed preventing them getting access to toilets, showers and hot food.

I also heard about truckers struggling to get breaks in the Highlands because the laybys they'd normally use were full of motor homes. Unfair and not safe it's one thing saying they have dispensation due to circumstances but that doesn't make it safe especially if they need the loo.

sartorius · 28/09/2021 15:16

Totally agree!
They were being applauded as key workers keeping us all fed while being treated appalling Confused

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 28/09/2021 18:50

Some of the million may not have driven for a long time, some may no longer want to, for many reasons. But if even 1% go back into the pool, I suppose it would be better than nothing.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 28/09/2021 18:52

I'm confused about the vaccine proof needed for events. I'm going to an event on 15th October. Event says I need one. If they give businesses a grace period until 18th, do I still have to get one? Could the event refuse me entry without one?

ssd · 28/09/2021 19:01

Agree with everything said here.

Yes, they could still deny you entry. They're giving a grace period for businesses to get their systems in place before fining those who are not enforcing the 'passports' but businesses will still be expected to comply with the system from next week.
ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 28/09/2021 20:43

I'd better get one then, *Haud.

LizzieMacQueen · 28/09/2021 20:58

Is 'giving a grace period' code for 'we ballsed up & didn't give you enough info to get the system in place in time, oops, sorry'

Lockdownbear · 28/09/2021 21:16

Lizzie that's similar to my interpretation. I was thinking it meant we don't know if it's workable but we want a bit more time before we scrap the idea.

WouldBeGood · 28/09/2021 21:29

Here’s hoping @Lockdownbear

Aye, I'd say so. They're saying they're only doing spot checks at the football, and hopefully the nightclubs will win their legal challenge and the whole thing will disappear.
