New thread, a very appropriate title I feel ...

I agree. When Boris did the painting photoshoot won his free holiday, immediately after the release of the damming covid report. Where was Starmer?? I think the fact that nearly all the press are owned by Tory donors is a factor. But still..

Scottishskifun · 24/10/2021 11:21

@forfucksakenett agree that any large event brings travel headache and nightmare to that area be it the commonwealth games, big rugby games or COP26.
In the North East we get the oil conference and the occasional SNP party conference. From a travel side its annoying but from a local economy side of things its a huge boost.

The rugby is going to be a pain for Edinburgh next few weeks too with the rail strike as it means more travelling by car.
I just don't get being opposed to something because of who's arranging it. Fine if you don't like any of those things going ahead ever.

StarryEyeSurprise · 24/10/2021 11:30

COP26 is in no way, shape or form equal to travelling to Murrayfield by car. Or an SNP conference. You know that schools are shutting because of it?

Scottishskifun · 24/10/2021 11:43

I didn't say it was just pointing out that Glasgow isn't the only place whihh will have travel disruptions.

Did you object this strongly to the commonwealth games being held in Glasgow with over half a million people attending....

StarryEyeSurprise · 24/10/2021 11:51

Ok, yes I agree. Other places have travel disruptions.

I'm not objecting to it per se - see my previous post. It's going to be hellish for lots of people though and a different site would have been better.

Again, I don't think you get it to be honest. I think you feel that everyone is having a moan solely because it's a UK Government event.

WouldBeGood · 24/10/2021 11:51

@Scottishskifun if you take a look at the road closures it’s on a different scale, because of security issues around the attendees.

I was speaking to a shop assistant in Glasgow yesterday and she was anticipating a serious downturn in trade for city businesses. Says it’s a step too far.

Okay. You cannot compare a big rugby game or the SNP conference to the COP. Not even a little bit. I can only assume that you live very far from Glasgow and have absolutely zero idea of the exceptional disruption that we are expecting for many days.

Nobody is moaning about who is organising it. I can't see a comment where that is the case. You've just decided that for some bizarre reason.

WouldBeGood · 24/10/2021 11:53

As an example, the Clydeside expressway is already shut for three weeks.

mibbelucieachwell · 24/10/2021 11:55

The population of Glasgow is over 600,000. Will 30,000 visitors make much more difference in terms of epidemiology? Nah.

mibbelucieachwell · 24/10/2021 11:56

It sure is causing mahoosive disruption though. I wonder what the net economic effect will be?

Scottishskifun · 24/10/2021 12:05

@forfucksakenett the debate originally started on the concept that it allowed unvaccinated people to Glasgow, followed by linking to other conferences, then travel disruptions.

I am simply pointing out that Glasgow has hosted bigger events, Edinburgh hosts big events even up here in the barren North East we get over 30,000 delegates when they hold a biannual oil conference which is more than COP26......

So if Glasgow can accommodate over 500,000 people attending commonwealth games which had road closures why all of a sudden is one event completely terrible to the city!

Scottishskifun · 24/10/2021 12:07

I'm not disputing from a travel aspect it will be a pain! But if the main objection is travel disruption then surely people will object to the commonwealth games ever returning to Glasgow on that basis!

forfucksakenett · 24/10/2021 12:12

500,000 ordinary people is a completely different kettle of fish to 30,000 people that include many world leaders and the Queen. The commonwealth games disruption was largely contained to the east end and I don't remember there being any disruption at all in the city centre area. The organisation and impact of all this is staggering.

Why not take the word of people who actually live and work in the area and stop trying to make it an SG versus Westminster thing.

forfucksakenett · 24/10/2021 12:13

Does anyone remember when Obama alone came to Glasgow? That was totally mad in itself and that was just one guy!

Scottishskifun · 24/10/2021 12:22

I do believe the travel disruption and stated many times I don't disagree with that.
I disagree with using covid as a reason for it not to go ahead when other large events do!

I live in a part of the country which regularly gets the Royal family and for many years the idiot trump flying in fully aware of high profile visitors and Borris is apparently coming to visit (oh joy).

Mistressiggi · 24/10/2021 12:24

My fantasy is for the Eurovision to come to Edinburgh, like in the movie

forfucksakenett · 24/10/2021 12:26

Well if you understand the scale of it then surely you can understand why people are moaning / concerned about the impact on their businesses. Some city centre retail staff are being warned of potential 3 hour commutes. That's the difference between a shop opening or not. That's a huge impact on business. Surely you appreciate that this is different to the Queen visiting her second home, a journey that she makes regularly? It's not all the event of course, the rail strikes are a huge part of it.

forfucksakenett · 24/10/2021 12:28

Sorry I didn't see where you were moaning about covid being used as a reason for it being cancelled. I was responding to your suggestion that people are only moaning because WM organised this and not the SG.

WouldBeGood · 24/10/2021 12:37

@Mistressiggi yes to Eurovision!

Scottishskifun · 24/10/2021 13:21

@forfucksakenett the original implications further up the thread were based around objecting to due to it causing covid spread in Glasgow.
I was simply questioning if there wasn't a objection to other large events based on covid then what was it based it on........

Travel objections I do get (as stated many times) but also that Glasgow has managed large events in the past and I'm sure they will cope with this whilst hopefully showing Glasgow in a positive light on the global stage which hopefully brings more visitors in the future. I don't dispute travel issues but that was given later on!

Completely agree the scotrail strike will cause a lot of additional chaos and that all parties should be working towards a solution!

I gave the Royal family and Trump examples as I fully understand high profile people and the security that goes with it. The Royal family also don't just sit in Balmoral when here and take part in a number of engagements road closures are common. Same with Trump even before he was president and his son liked to fly in for golf during his presidency. Yes that is a smaller scale than COP26 before that one gets thrown at me.

StarryEyeSurprise · 24/10/2021 13:29

No one said it shouldn't go ahead. I lived in the city centre during the Commonwealth Games and don't recall major roads being closed. Perhaps someone can correct me if I'm misremembering? We often stay on Braemar and have done when the Queen , and others, are at Balmoral. Have you been on the expressway in Glasgow? The M8 through the city centre? It's just that if you haven't, its quite hard to get your head around why someone who would normally take 25 minutes to get to work is needing to factor in three hours due to COP26.

I said objections 😉

Yep been on the M8 multiple times. I get the travel issues and it will be a nightmare. But I also see it as putting Glasgow on the global stage, hopefully increasing future tourism when it often gets overlooked quite a lot for Edinburgh and also a well needed boost to the hospitality sector in the city who have disproportionately been effected by the Glasgow lockdowns for so long.

I also have friends in Glasgow who are hosting some delegates/visitors and another who is renting out their house (making a absolute killing whilst they go away kinda jealous of that one!)

I just hope it goes as smoothly as possible.

Braemar is beautiful, Charles usually when up puts in many visits in different Aberdeenshire towns and in Ballater quite frequently along with Braemar.
Andrew seems to have stayed in the castle though.......... 😂

@starryeyesuprise there are rumours that Borris is doing a Japanese cherry tree opening in a Aberdeenshire town called Stonehaven because bizarrely someone in Parliament asked him to.... So you can always have a day out on the North East Coast and ask him your question! All else fails there is a great castle!

Surely if it normally takes 25 minutes you're able to walk at least part of the distance, rather than endure a 3 hour commute? Similarly for those who are working in the city centre - buses travel in and out, and will have diverted routes planned. Yes, for some people it's going to be a nightmare, but a bit of creative thinking may help.
