Another lockdown being considered

Has anyone else heard about this? Sturgeon is considering another circuit breaker if cases don’t fall in the next few weeks. My heart sank when I read this as we’re due to get married in October. Do people think it’s likely she will do this? I’m from England and totally regret booking my wedding in Scotland now Sad

Suppose it depends how cases go. They have shot up so depends if that translates into hospital admissions and death. Schools went back nearly 2 weeks ago and i think that has helped drive cases up

Dentistlakes · 26/08/2021 09:12

Where did you hear this? I wouldn’t be surprised if NS did implement another lockdown. She often takes a different approach to England. I hope it doesn’t disrupt your wedding op.

Sweetchocolatecandy · 26/08/2021 09:15

It’s been widely reported today by BBC news, Sky news, the Scottish Sun etc.

WouldBeGood · 26/08/2021 09:15

If I were you I’d try to change your wedding to England. It’s insane up here and it seems quite possible there will be another lockdown or at least more restrictions, which could well impact a wedding.

Hotcoffee10 · 26/08/2021 09:17

Absolutely no justification for another lockdown currently. NS has no judgement on these issues. Another lockdown will prolong pressures on the NHS at this point. To help the NHS we should stop all asymptomatic testing and only isolate the sick.

Sweetchocolatecandy · 26/08/2021 09:17

@WouldBeGood I would love to but it’s already been paid for in full with a no returns policy so we can’t afford it. We’ve already postponed once, I just can’t bear this stress.

With hospital numbers going up by 20-30 a day it's not much time till we're back in difficult time for the NHS.

I hoped we were past all this shit but apparently not.

Sad
WouldBeGood · 26/08/2021 09:20

Totally agree @Hotcoffee10

WouldBeGood · 26/08/2021 09:22

Oh, no @Sweetchocolatecandy. How stressful. The SG has no thought for the impact on people when they float this pish.

I really hope you get your wedding the way you planned 💐

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 26/08/2021 09:23

I’m feeling concerned about this. We live in England but DD goes to university in Scotland. Hope everything goes ok for you wedding.

RJnomore1 · 26/08/2021 09:24

I can see it happening, I am so fed up living in Scotland by now.

NautaOcts · 26/08/2021 09:31

We’re on holiday at the moment in Scotland, but just compared rates between here (Moray) and home and is massively higher at home - 350+ per 100 000. Scotland seems ok compared to some parts of the Uk. And schools haven’t gone back yet in England.

Another lockdown being considered
ClerkMaxwell · 26/08/2021 09:35

I would hope she and her government are considering all options just in case things go badly health wise. It would be hard to argue that weddings and other social events can go ahead if hospitals are overwhelmed. There is no guarantee that switching your wedding to England will be any better covid wise by October although I agree rules likely to be less stringent. Is there a possibility to switch location?Sturgeon is cautious which I like.

dementedpixie · 26/08/2021 09:37

There's only 391 people in hospital and 45 in ICU so it doesn't look like the high case numbers are translating into high hospital admissions.

Hopefully vaccinations are breaking the link between cases and serious illness

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 26/08/2021 09:39

Nah, it feels like a ground-staking exercise around vaccines (for secondary school kids, etc) to me. Get a few more jags in arms. The more people are vaccinated now, the better the autumn and winter will be.

Her language is all about caution (as it always is) but none of the serious analysis suggests that new lockdowns are imminent.

I also wonder if there's a bit of political deflection going on here; spark a bit of a flurry of covid-coverage, and it takes some of the heat off the SNP-Green deal for a few days.

dementedpixie · 26/08/2021 09:39

I dont see a circuit breaker mentioned; just that they aren't ruling put restrictions if required. School are off in October so maybe that can be the circuit breaker

Newgirls · 26/08/2021 09:42

I’m worried about my uni student too. They were so much stricter than England last year and it was an awful depressing situation for them.

OP it might be ok for your wedding. Surely things like that will be protected as far as possible.

Maybe it is NS pushing for more people to get jabs. My 19 year old had her second this week and was amazed how many older people were still getting theirs.

Leftphalange · 26/08/2021 09:45

I don't think she will. In my experience most people in my area feel that we're double vaccinated so we have to love our lives with it. I think another lockdown would cause outrage, people are already not bothering with masks sometimes and I think she runs the risk of people just rebelling completely. It's awful here with her as she has it hanging over your head. I think she will just say it to scare some people like my MIL into staying home of their own accord and to encourage the younger ones to get vaccines.

Sally872 · 26/08/2021 09:46

When I listened to her the other day she mentioned something about "hopes another lockdown would never be needed but she would not shy away from it if she had to" or words to that effect. Didn't sound like anything planned.

charliebrown59 · 26/08/2021 09:48

I'm not sure without UK furlough Scotland can afford another lockdown (although scheme runs til end Sept).

School closures, universities reverting online, that's more likely. Hope you'll be ok for the wedding @Sweetchocolatecandy what a stress!

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 26/08/2021 09:54

How can she possibly justify it when there is no furlough. If they extend that then yes I think she will.

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 26/08/2021 09:56

Is this coming from her briefing the other day or has something else been said?

Because I know that she did mention restrictions being a possibility again but it was very far from being set out as a reality. That's how the papers reported it though because nothing else she said was noteworthy. Basically: be careful.

WouldBeGood · 26/08/2021 10:08

These are new news reports this morning

Hi OP- I’m so sorry you have this to deal with. We’re used to the threats and being ‘telt’, but so sad if you’ve chosen Scotland for your wedding and have to be subject to this kind of lingering threat.
If your venue has to lockdown again (and I really don’t think Scottish businesses will take any more of this shit, I’m fully expecting them to push back) they will have to refund you. I know it’s probably more stressful emotionally than just about the money, especially if you’ve cancelled once already. You could hold firm and assume all going ahead, as once NS realises people won’t take another lockdown specifically for Scotland, she’ll pull back on the threats as popularity polls are most important to NS.

Personally, I think it’s all leading to vaccine rollout for 12-16, this is part of the strategy, blaming schools and keeping our kids masked up. If I had a Scottish business I’d be telling SG- through the medium of sweary words- to reinforce their support, not just roll out more scaremongering. It’s too much now.

Groovee · 26/08/2021 10:18

I'm not sure but I wouldn't rule it out.

Open the nightclubs at a similar time to the schools returning...
