Another lockdown being considered

Has anyone else heard about this? Sturgeon is considering another circuit breaker if cases don’t fall in the next few weeks. My heart sank when I read this as we’re due to get married in October. Do people think it’s likely she will do this? I’m from England and totally regret booking my wedding in Scotland now Sad

@SylviasMotherSaid

I am not a a fan of Boris Johnston but if he had came out and enforced masks and went on about them the way Nicola does I think she would have taken a totally different approach to them !
Spot on!

From the BBC on the SG briefing today

"Ms Sturgeon says the government is not considering introducing a so-called circuit breaker lockdown to try to limit the spread of the virus"

Explosivefarts · 27/08/2021 12:56

I’m so glad she confirmed no circuit breaker. Wonder what the next move will be. Can’t close businesses as it would be pointless as it’s spreading in schools. But she has prompted rightly so keep schools open and that would be her priority.

RunnerDown · 27/08/2021 12:57

These threads always seem to be more about folks hatred of Nicola than a discussion of the facts.
There is clear evidence that masks reduce transmission. Many public health experts are aghast that Boris has stopped mask wearing in England - esp in schools. If you think Nicola only keeps them going because Boris hasn’t then you are lettting your political beliefs cloud your judgement.
Numbers are rising exponentially at the moment. So no matter how much people don’t want any more restrictions the awful reality is that they may have to be re- introduced if it continues and the NHS is being overwhelmed again. The pandemic won’t go away because people are fed up of it.
I think she should be doing more at the moment. She should put adequate ventilation in schools, maintaining all the social distancing stuff and halting mass events.
But - despite the fact that I have a medical background, am educated to post graduate level , I know on these threads that you are instantly labelled as stupid and unthinking if you show any support for Nicola.

Explosivefarts · 27/08/2021 12:59

*promise not prompted

Nonsense

There is clear evidence that properly worn FFP2 and FFP3 masks reduce transmission. Evidence for cloth masks is patchier. I would expect they probably do reduce transmission more than doing nothing but less than an FFP2 would, but we don’t know how much more/less, or whether that’s time-limited so maybe effective for a 30-minute bus ride but not for a 7-hour schoolday, or how much delta changes that.

It would really be good to have a bit more evidence on this, if we’re debating things like whether they should be kept in place all day at secondary schools. No?

latissimusdorsi · 27/08/2021 13:06

Looking on SG public dashboard the latest figs available (up to Monday) show the 2 largest groups of positive cases are 25-44 and 0-14.
That's school kids and their parents I'd say so what would you shut to make a difference?
Hopefully those age groups are unlikely to turn into hospital numbers next week

GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 13:07

And to try to head off accusations of Nicola-hating, I saw most of her briefing today and thought it was pretty good and sensible.

titsintiers · 27/08/2021 14:41

I would agree with that @GoldenOmber

Tuppity · 27/08/2021 14:45

Such a shame. I assume they aren’t really considering shutting schools only 2 weeks after opening. I assume any changes to restrictions would just be not to go in each other’s homes.

Explosivefarts · 27/08/2021 16:07

Yes tuppity I think that may be all they can do and I don’t think anyone will stick to it .

rookiemere · 27/08/2021 17:56

I don't think they'll shut schools unless they are absolutely desperate. Met a friend for lunch today and due to her job she's semi privvy to some of the thinking- she thought rolling back big events could be a possibility in the first instance if needed.

Tuppity · 27/08/2021 18:07

Small changes to the restrictions are unlikely to make much difference really unfortunately. It’s so difficult to manage.

Yep. I am hoping they try and ride it out without additional restrictions.

I do think the prolonged restrictions in Scotland have done more harm than good and I'm not sure they would really be respected at the moment.

People's behaviour will start to change now. They will be more wary before they do things. They may chose to keep distance from vulnerable family etc.

I think that may have the biggest impact over the next few weeks, although that will be diluted by schools being in.

tigger1001 · 27/08/2021 19:09

"do think the prolonged restrictions in Scotland have done more harm than good and I'm not sure they would really be respected at the moment."

I agree with this. I've really noticed a big change in attitudes now and people are just beyond fed up.

It's not just the prolonged restrictions, it's the governments own very mixed messages for the last few months. People are getting more and more cynical about the governments reasonings and I think compliance for further restrictions will not be great.

Obviously if shops etc shut, there are little people can do, but if they try to implement restrictions in the number of people you can meet indoors etc then I just can't see people complying now.

rookiemere · 27/08/2021 19:18

Yes @Wakeupin2022 my friend didn't come for lunch today, she was worried about rising numbers and passing covid on to her DPs with health issues. But having said that the restaurant was full.

Other friend and I both have DCs so unless we kept them off school - which I'll never do unless there is no choice - we run a much higher chance of catching it even if we never went out.

RaraRachael · 27/08/2021 20:11

We've been told to go back to seating p3-7s in rows which is a PITA as with around 30 in a class, there isn't really room to do this comfortably

Haudyourwheesht · 27/08/2021 22:52

@mibbelucieachwell

50% of the current cases are in under 25s so restricting events like weddings would be disproportionate. A huge number of cases were linked to the Boardmasters Festival and the Latitude festival, also to Transmt in Glasgow. Events such as those would be more obvious candidates for restrictions.
You know Trnsmt hasn't happened yet? So maybe, just maybe, what you're saying isn't actually true.

Aww really I wonder if our school will do the same. They just announced that classes no longer have to stay in class zones in the playground anymore too
RJnomore1 · 28/08/2021 00:27

@Haudyourwheesht yep I’ve got TRNSMT tickets on two weeks. Just hoping it happens.

Sausagema · 28/08/2021 07:49

They are starting to do activities with different years together in the playground at our primary school. It is BRILLIANT. The only faces happier than the kids in the pictures are the teachers.

Haudyourwheesht · 28/08/2021 08:13

@RJnomore1 My senior pupils are so excited. They've missed so much. In other good news, the flume is open at my local pool. It was lovely to see the wee ones so excited.

Flumes are clearly one of these things that cause an uncontrollable spread of covid, despite the fact that you go down one by one and it's constantly being washed with chlorine.

RaraRachael · 28/08/2021 10:40

Explosivefarts it's really annoying as last year was SO hard. We have a new HT and I think she may be trying to make her mark by being ultra firm (a la NS).

We stuck to having rows all of last year even though most neighbouring schools had theirs in groups Hmm
