The end was not nigh, and still looking far far away, so here’s the latest thread.

Usual railing rules apply: all rails or good news welcome, no nauseating positivity or resilience wankery. 😃

NotSoLongGoodbye - fairly sure it's not speculation, John Swinney announced a consultation on it yesterday. Concerns me there's not been more objection to it

WouldBeGood · 18/08/2021 10:58

@NotSoLongGoodbye it’s not speculation.

They are “consulting” on it until November I think, but they never listen to anyone else. It’s very serious.

The Scottish deficit has also soared this year. They really are running a total shitshow.

Oh God I'm really concerned now. I won't swear but bloody hell this smacks of power-crazed SNP politicians doing things for 'our own good'

NotSoLongGoodbye · 18/08/2021 11:02

Yes - if DS wasn't at school we would be packing our bags and moving to NW England where lots of my family live

Scottishskifun · 18/08/2021 11:04

@ssd not sure if it makes you feel better but it's a PCR test that has to be done (which is more reliable than LFT) and it's only for double vaccinated people so not all.

I think with MN you could easily think that being double vaccinated doesn't make a difference due to threads etc. But studies are showings that 22 million infections have been prevented which is a lot!
Plus I am convinced your a super antibody person 😁

ElephantOfRisk · 18/08/2021 11:08

I got my code through and have ordered my test. I'll let you know how I get on.

Maybe if they stopped fannying about with all the shit they prioritise then Scotgov might be able to make a difference to the real issues of poverty in this country.

This thread needs more voices too:

For those with secondary school age children confirmed this morning by the education secretary that exams will go ahead "if safe to do so......" so would say no real clarity for many and could still get cancelled.
Apparently "careful contingency planning has taken place in the case there is further significant disruption to learning or if public health conditions do not allow for the holding of a examination diet"

With the statement that further guidance on what this is will be issued "at the earliest opportunity"....... Seems like more sit and wait and uncertainty.

I saw it in the evening express website.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 18/08/2021 11:18

Those GERS figures are absolutely shocking - 22.4% deficit c.f. 14.2% in the UK as a whole, with public sector spending soaring to an additional £1,828 per person compared to the UK average. They're blaming COVID of course, but that doesn't explain why we're so much worse off than the rUK (although SNP mismanagement/excessive restrictions might..). And they want to push through the right to unilaterally impose all these restrictions again should they 'judge' it necessary without the need for that pesky scrutiny.

Consultations are a complete waste of time and money. The SNP launching a consultation means "this is what we have decided to do, like it or lump it". If hte consultation doesn't show overwhelming support they will just refuse to release the results, like the gender recognition and hate crime "consultation".

Total shit show and waste of time.

Ah but @WouldBeGood that's because they are shackled to Westminster! In an independent Scotland, the deficit would cease to exist because we'd control our own taxes and spending and everything would be AMAZING, just like New Zealand, or Denmark, or Iceland, or any other little random country. The word "deficit" won't exist in an independent Scotland!

ElephantOfRisk · 18/08/2021 12:37

We'll self identify as a very very rich country and all the poor people will self identify as billionaires so it will all be great. And we won't need to pay for any defence which fucks up our economy because the world is a stable place and we don't need any troops or weapons. We can build a wall to stop people sneaking out in to enjoy the freedoms we have...

ElephantOfRisk · 18/08/2021 12:39

Consultations are also a way to pretend you are doing something while you kick the can down the road a bit. This one will obviously just go through no questions asked but anything potentially beneficial will not see the light of day.

OnceUponAWhine · 18/08/2021 12:42

Consult with whom? Between themselves and the gardening wing?
We minions won’t have any influence on it whatsoever. I would just tell them all to get to fuck anyway, even on a multiple choice questionnaire.

OnceUponAWhine · 18/08/2021 12:49

Kate Forbes on Twitter today blaming Westminster for Scotland’s deficit. Even if they’re good for nothing else, at least we can rely on them for entertaining, predictable statements. GrinGrinGrinGrin

ElephantOfRisk · 18/08/2021 12:50

As I said on another thread, at least they are consistent, consistently shite.

Tomorrowisanewday · 18/08/2021 12:50

TheGenealogist - my thoughts exactly Angry

WouldBeGood · 18/08/2021 13:22

@TheGenealogist see you were correct! Kate Forbes says so 😃

The SNP blaming Westminster is as predictable as night following day. The figures are so bad for nationalists the only way out is non evidence based assertions.

I can't be bothered to engage this year, if it's not absolutely clear the UK transfers help support Scotland and have done for a long number of years now then there's no point discussing it as you're in a place beyond evidence based argument.

riverrunning · 18/08/2021 13:34

I see Forbes is resorting to the usual Scotland can do it guff. Nothing new here from them. Blame covid will be a strategy for the next 20 years.

ResilienceWanker · 18/08/2021 14:30

Urgh. It is all so depressing and predictable. It's really bad, but at the moment we're shielded from the worst because we ARE part of the UK and do have something of a safety net, regardless what the SG say. God help us if we weren't...

mibbelucieachwell · 18/08/2021 14:35

Good afternoon y'all. At least the SNP can take credit for being brilliant at something . Such a shame the something is their endless capacity to prolong public Covid anxiety with their failure to guarantee exams next year. For goodness sake. By then plenty of 16 and 17 year olds will be double vaccinated and it'll be the late spring. You'd think they could come up with some system of moderation for children who have had to miss schooling between now and then to ensure fairness if that's what they're concerned with.

My personal rail is that I still feel compelled to check the number of cases every day. The Scottish figures are shooting up again - I know they're always highest on Wednesdays and Thursdays but the trend is definitely upwards. And even though I know nobody in my home is at risk from covid it still makes me slightly anxious. I'm back working with my music pupils again mostly non socially distanced, which is so much better than being at opposite ends of a room (for many reasons) and now I'm on the constant lookout for symptoms of covid. Tbh if I got it soon it would hopefully get it out of the way and I could relax about having to test, tell pupils parents blah blah but such has been the fear mongering by the Scottish government (and the media) that I still have some covid anxiety. Angry

In other news DS ordered a vaccine certificate from the SG. It has details of both his vaccines (first was done in England) . All good so far. But he only realised after he ordered it that it's going to go to our old home which was sold again recently and we have no contact details for the new owners. DS has gone back down south leaving me to chap on the door of our old house and ask the new owners to phone when it arrives so I can pick it up.

Pretty much and a result of oil downturn as well (which NS last week declared no new developments should be approved to the PM) not sure their maths stacks up on that one! Never mind the fact that many rural communities are reliant on oil for heating system or it needs to be a gradual phased out ensuring energy security........

Climate change does need addressing but unfortunately its not as simple as turn off the switch unless we are going back to candles and wood burning!

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 18/08/2021 15:06

@mibbelucieachwell the number of tests has also shot up, no doubt because schools are back and they are trawling asymptomatic people again. These would have been flying under the radar (because people with mild/no symptoms don't usually obsessively test for disease), but now positives picked up by lateral flow go on to have PCRs to confirm, and voila, loads more cases. Not sure it matters that much tbh. The situation is very different to previous points in the pandemic.
