The end was not nigh, and still looking far far away, so here’s the latest thread.

Usual railing rules apply: all rails or good news welcome, no nauseating positivity or resilience wankery. 😃

I'm liking the civil service job portal though scottishskifun - Quite a variety there! I'm getting a bit fed up with not having any work (self employed, so it's my own fault really, but I've lost the oomph to chase stuff tbh) and am thinking of going back to a proper job, but I'm also slightly falling out of love with my area, though have no skills in anything else. I think I'm having a bit of a mid life crisis, really. And now isn't the time to have one of them!

The SG is looking for a new Permanent Secretary, for £180k or so if anyone fancies it Grin

titsintiers · 17/08/2021 09:22

I'm not sure £180k is enough to put up with their bullshit.

Scottishskifun · 17/08/2021 09:43

@ResilienceWanker yep it has a massive range! It's always worth clicking on to check the details as job titles can be a bit strange sometimes!

The application forms can be a bit of a bitch my tip would be to look at the competency matrix (just Google the dept/govt!) and job description and answer question. Oh and copy the questions into word and type there before copy and pasting as the damn things time out and you lose it!

😂 I actually used to work for a SG dept a few years ago but it was a science one so not too bad definitely didn't pay 180k though!

shouldistop · 17/08/2021 09:46

Just about to go to my first toddler group with baby ds! Found ones that's open finally Grin

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 17/08/2021 09:50

What kind of work do you do @ResilienceWanker ?

True dat Grin I'd be willing to hold my nose for a bit, though, to be fair.

Urk. You see, it's things like competency matrices that give me the heebie jeebies Grin I'm just not designed for modern jobs.

I do environmentally stuff, includewomen. Impact assessments for planning - that kind of thing. All the big nasty developments that no one wants in their back yard... So I'm too tainted with Big Industry (and maybe too pragmatic Blush) to be a proper environmentalist, but not commercially minded enough to go down the development side of things. Biology/ science background, but now definitely a generalist - reports with numbered paragraphs and assessment matrices and things rather than proper science with actual numbers. And absolutely shit at waffly big picture kind of stuff.

Oh, exciting news shouldistop! Hope you both enjoy it. At least you should get a cup of tea and a biscuits, which has to be something.

Railing against the SG consultation on making permanent the powers to make “beneficial temporary measures”. Including the power to close schools due to public health concerns. Abd more.

This is chilling

Wtf have I just seen. Walked past the local primary school at playtime. Supervising staff in high vis coats, masks and gloves. One has an apron. OUTSIDE.

WouldBeGood · 17/08/2021 10:37

Oh my god, @TheGenealogist!

How welcoming for the new tiny P1s.

riverrunning · 17/08/2021 10:43

Masks, gloves and aprons - bloody hell. And I'm sure the kids have all been deluged in hand sanitiser at least 15 x already today.

ElephantOfRisk · 17/08/2021 10:45

Maybe they'll install a sheep dip type thing at the gates where all children will be sanitised head to toe and might have the bonus of them learning to swim. Keeps those pesky parents out of the playground too.

SG hasn't dropped masks for schools, so masks in school grounds. Shit I know. Only decent thing is kids are use to seeing masks in nursery too.

Gloves and apron seems excessive unless they've been dealing with an injury.

The playground supervisors stand at the door as they troop in in the morning, after break, lunch with the bottle of sanitiser.

Oh God. I'd assumed something like this would be on the cards. Consultations - a sure fire way of only listening to the opinions they want and ignoring everyone else... Hmm I mean, some of the suggestions seem fine (online public meetings, increased flexibility of timescales assuming all parties agree, and so on), but I don't know why they need permanent powers to enact those... Just bring them forward as changes to the relevant legislation! Not keen at all on school closing powers etc. That should definitely be subject to debate/ challenge in parliament, and only for very specific reasons - not be able to be done on a whim because there's a bit of a worry about case numbers or something...
randomsabreuse · 17/08/2021 10:59

I'd assume they were dealing with an injury. We're on day 4 and my

randomsabreuse · 17/08/2021 11:02

Posted too soon. Day 4 and my P2 has had properly scraped knees and a head bump. 5 head bumps in her class yesterday!!! She's spent the summer at sports camps so should know how not to crash but no!!! I'd be wearing stuff required for treating crashes ready if I were on duty! They are allowed to play with not "bubble" people and use more playground though!

ResilienceWanker · 17/08/2021 11:03

The whole PPE in playground thing does seem excessive. We've just had an email from the school and council about arrangements for restarting, and it all sounds pretty sensible. The whole playground is back in use, and the kids can play with anyone - not just their own classes, and they're stopping the staggered play from what I can gather. No assemblies, masks for adults (in primary - including STILL parents at pick up Angry) and open windows seems to be the only weird stuff still in play. But I'm sure we'll find out properly tomorrow!

ResilienceWanker · 17/08/2021 11:07

Disinfectant moat around the school sounds fun, though! The risk of drowning or light chemical burns would make the school day much more exciting Grin

Tileso · 17/08/2021 11:08

First primary class positive case this term already. They don't have to isolate, fantastic, but it does feel odd after the indoctrination for so long.

Same here Resillience and it’s really hard to complain about IRL at the moment, as the employment situation is so tricky for many.

I have gambled on applying for an actual contract, going to work for someone, instead of myself. It’s leftfield too, but something I’ve fancied doing for a while. I just thought, what the hell, I’m at an age where my skin is thick enough to take rejection not really on the inside, I’ll be hugely disappointed and drink too much wine to compensate.

Today, I’m mostly trying not to be angry about schools returning with pretty much same conditions in place. Trying to sit on my hands and not type ranty comments on TwitterAngry. We have to go with the ‘it’s just for 6 weeks’ but we’ve been there before, it’s just for X number of weeks…haven’t we?

sassanach · 17/08/2021 11:58

careers adviser here (use a variety of usernames so not to be identified in RL!)

Civil Service jobsite is good, other ones to look at are goodmoves (charity jobs), myjobscotland (public sector), indeed, charityjobs, and jobs.ac.uk (uni jobs)

S1 jobs is pretty rubbish and getting less user friendly. The jobcentre one doesn't have a great range of jobs either.

This is inevitable. I’m ready for a fight with that one or I’ll finally leave Scotland as it will tip me over as it’s so much overreach from SG now, above and beyond devolved powers. It would also seriously impact future U.K. payments, such as furlough schemes- forcing the U.K. gov hand financially- possibly their plan anyway? I can’t be bothered talking about them today, they are just the gritty, shitty icing on a stale, Covid-flavoured cake…
