The end was not nigh, and still looking far far away, so here’s the latest thread.

Usual railing rules apply: all rails or good news welcome, no nauseating positivity or resilience wankery. 😃

I was waiting for someone to mention alcohol deaths had gone up in England. They had an almost 20% rise compared to our 17%. However that rise takes them up to 13 per 100k and ours is at 21.5/100k.

ssd · 17/08/2021 18:57

Alcohol is such a big part of a lot of people's lives in Scotland. Ive worked in a few pubs in the city centre and theres people, usually men, who came in every night. Having a drink is part of their lives. Me and dh hardly drink at all and we both feel a bit of a weirdo in our social circles. At my age, not being prosecco daft, or sinking a few glasses of wine at the weekend is pretty uncommon. Sometimes i wish i could drink, but i suffer too much afterwards. But i know how dependant so many people in Scotland are on drink, i really dont know the answer. There's so many aspects of why people drink.

WouldBeGood · 17/08/2021 18:59

I read something the other day which said it’s not airborne as such, in that it doesn’t float in the air waiting to pounce. Hence no evidence of spread on public transport and so on

I drink loads, especially now, to dull the pain of my empty restricted life

Thats interesting @WouldBeGood

I really dont know how ive not had it by now. Unless i was asymptomatic. Working in a shop almost all the way through except a few months at the first 2020 lockdown and getting public transport i really don't know how I've avoided it. As well as dh having it last year. Its really weird.

The transmission is really weird. The article was really interesting. Can’t remember where I saw it though

Scottishskifun · 17/08/2021 19:11

@WouldBeGood no it doesn't fly through the air more the particles can remain for a time period and that's dependent on refresh rate. In a completely static environment that's many hours (I think 16 is the most found in lab conditions) but very few environments are static including public transport as the doors opening allows a certain amount of air exchange.

Hence all the adverts now are about being outside or opening windows!

ElephantOfRisk · 17/08/2021 19:14

I got an invite for an antibody test via the Zoe app so i've signed up for that out of interest. They wanted people who'd had symptoms even if the hadn't been tested. I'm double jagged too so this might be interesting.

Ooooo you might be one of the rare super antibody people!!!! There are a very small few people found who's bodies naturally create the antibodies just on exposure without ever getting the infection itself or vaccination. Not many have been found but basically body creates them just by a small exposure levels so your body gets rid of the virus before it ever reaches a viral load enough to register as an infection.
WouldBeGood · 17/08/2021 19:18

It was clear that it was mostly close and sustained contact rather than anything else, I remember that

Lidlfix · 17/08/2021 19:24

I drink a fair bit but it's not to dull pain at present . During both lock downs it was though as I really missed other people and social interactions and felt so isolated whilst under huge pressure at work.

DH and I have been enjoying our own roaring 20s since hospitality opened up. I know that fear of another almost 7 month lockdown is a motivating factor in my carpe diem attitude as I had a very long winter to regret not snatching every moment last summer. But we also enjoy creating cocktails, matching a nice wine with a new recipe, savouring a single malt after a distillery visit rather than grabbing something cheap to get hammered.

I completely see where your coming from SSD as we have become a gin/Prosecco/wine o'clock culture and that worries me. Much as I am not going to change my behaviours at the moment, unhealthy ones are normalised.

ssd · 17/08/2021 19:43

@Lidlfix, you sound like you enjoy your drinks though. I used to really enjoy a drink but now the headaches kill me. I'm a headachy person, so anything that makes them worse is to be avoided. @Scottishskifun, i bloody hope so Grin though i think taking high strength vit d from the very beginning of it all has helped me too.

ElephantOfRisk · 17/08/2021 19:44

I barely drink as I mostly can't be bothered. I'm not anti drink but generally can take or leave it. I have the occasional bottle of fruity cider and even more rarely, DH and I will split a bottle of wine. I like some sparkles at Christmas and on birthdays and if someone was making me cocktails then I wouldn't say no either. Dh has the odd beer or dram but usually just at weekends. We both come from a background of big drinkers and have had our own moments when we were younger.

You are over 4 times more likely to die from alcohol in the most deprived areas of Scotland and in general, from all causes 1.9 times more likely to die (presumably this means early as i'm not sure what it means exactly?) as taken from the infographic produced by nrs scotland

What does it involve? Would you not have antibodies anyway after the jags? Or am i missing the point of the test?
sweetpotatoaddict · 17/08/2021 19:51

I did one a month or so back. It said no antibodies, but added in that this was testing for past infection not to see if the vaccinations had worked.

ElephantOfRisk · 17/08/2021 19:51

I've no idea really ssd but i got an email inviting me to participate so I went for it. I think i've to wait on another email to order the test etc so it might take a while and i only started completing the daily thing this year or towards the end of last year so I've no idea how it knows I had covid in March as I've never been tested and wasn't using zoe then. Maybe I had to add that info at some point, can't remember.

Or maybe it might be connected to the things I reported after having the jag?

I don't know but i'd be interested to see what it says.

ssd · 17/08/2021 19:59

It is interesting and its good someone is researching it further

ElephantOfRisk · 17/08/2021 20:02

There were a whole lot of other reasons you could be part of the survey, main one for scotland was being in Education. It initially told me I didn't qualify but then i realised i'd used a different email to the one I got the invite through so i did it again and it was fine.

Lidlfix · 17/08/2021 20:15

Be warned star jumps and in my case DH literally squeezing the blood out of my punctured finger tips were involved. Hand sanitizer the next few days was nippy. All to find out I had no antibodies.

WouldBeGood · 17/08/2021 20:28

I did star jumps yesterday @Lidlfix.

Quite the sight.

I need an effective sports bra.

ElephantOfRisk · 17/08/2021 20:29

I've always been pretty good at bleeding so hopefully not too much of an issue - i'll report back or come looking for tips nearer the time :) Now if all the wanted was a mysterious unexplained bruise then i'm their woman....

It's not that there is never a reason for the bruise but i'm clumsy and have a shite memory so finding a massive bruise somewhere is always a bit of a "where the feck did you come from?" moment.

ElephantOfRisk · 17/08/2021 20:30

did you end up with 2 black eyes?
Lidlfix · 17/08/2021 20:36

Star jumps and squats with jumps were DD2's fave part of our back garden boot camp in lockdown v 1. I have worried about the structural integrity of my decking ever since Blush.
