The end was not nigh, and still looking far far away, so here’s the latest thread.

Usual railing rules apply: all rails or good news welcome, no nauseating positivity or resilience wankery. 😃

I think it’s worse here as we had such harsher restrictions so very low natural immunity

I think all the winter sickness bugs and colds will be out in force this year

ssd · 29/08/2021 17:48

I agree with you @runningpink. I haven't heard when us over 50s are to start getting the free flu jag, its all gone quiet....
And dont bloody blame @riverrunning, get stuck in

runningpink · 29/08/2021 17:54

I was chatting to a friend yesterday who is a primary teacher, early 50s. She was saying all the teachers at her school are now being offered the flu vaccine this year at same time as the kids. So it’s taken until covid for this to happen!

There appears to be an issue with routine bloods as well due to a shortage of equipment.

I’m also on the wine! Looking at the pile of dishes but they might be getting ignored until the morning!

Scottishskifun · 29/08/2021 18:58

Opening up at the same time loads of kids sat in poorly ventilated spaces for 6 hours a day was always going to cause issues.

Combined with lower immunity from less catching alpha variant (which was more transmissible among children) as schools were shut and we were all in lock down when it was really ramping up means more people especially the young available to infect.

StarryEyeSurprise · 29/08/2021 19:06

@ssd

Oh i'm sorry for those who feel unwell, we definitely have forgotten how to fight germs now we are all sanitised to the hilt Sad But im glad you're ds got away *@mibbelucieachwell*, what a nail biting time you have all had.

In other news...why is it so bad up here? Its hellish in my area, England is open up more and cases aren't as high? Is it really schools???

Cases are double in England what they are here. ONS stats - 1 in 140 here, 1 in 70 in England, 1 in 40 in NI and 1 in 120 in Wales. We are the lowest in the UK..
WouldBeGood · 29/08/2021 19:13

Cases are falling in England

We’ve handled this so badly.

Travelling tabby has a useful breakdown of nations especially when done per 100,000 shows what's going on.

There are definitely some very high pockets in England as well such as the SW but this is mostly related to a known event

Another useful one for what's happening per nation.

England looks fairly stable. When do the NI schools go back?

Scottishskifun · 29/08/2021 19:28

Next week. NI lockdowns have also been strict so think they are seeing the same thing as here more potential people as less natural immunity in the population.
ssd · 29/08/2021 19:48

I notice its very much swings and roundabouts.
Our cases soar and Englands cases fall

Then theirs soar and ours fall

But I cant figure out why

I dont think theres more immunity down there. I dint know what it is

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 29/08/2021 19:49

"Cases are double in England what they are here."

This simply isn't true, as shown in the graphs above. The ONS is a lagging indicator, usually a couple of weeks out of date. What's more, the trend is at least as interesting as the absolute numbers, and England has been stable for several weeks. Perhaps a slight rise but actually falling slightly now. 5 consecutive days with lower case numbers than the week before. Scotland by contrast is rocketing right now, as above probably because we decided to time our opening up for the same time as schools going back. We also have less natural immunity so could well be more vulnerable to delta than parts of the UK with higher natural immunity. Thankfully it's in younger age groups who are less at risk, but the numbers are very high and enough to get everyone twitchy about hospital capacity. Whichever way you slice it, the decisions made re. timing of opening up are a big part of the current problem - if we didn't always have to wait and see what happens in England before taking action, and if we'd actually understood that an exit wave was inevitable so best to time it earlier in the school holidays, I doubt we'd be seeing 7k cases a day now.

We've always been offered it in Glasgow. Last year however, there were no slots for teachers as all taken by folk working from home I suspect.

I've never bothered before, only took it when I was pregnant but might go for it this year.

riverrunning · 29/08/2021 20:16

According to Devi, JCVI is to blame for Scotland's covid surge, for failing to approve jabbing 12-15 year olds quickly enough, and failing to be Denmark.

Amazing how quickly she's adopted the SNP strategy of cherry picking examples from any small country they imagine they could be, regardless of any real factors.

Scottishskifun · 29/08/2021 20:23

ONS data is useful for potential trends but yes it tends to be about 10 days behind and also uses modelling to estimate. They are clear about this on their website and the ranges. If anyone is interested link below in how they calculate, lags and estimations.

Today’s not all bad though as NS is self isolating. Hopefully with no access to media.

Careful @riverrunning she's just doing her best and now her mental health is suffering. Just like every other bugger that's had to endure restrictions based on her advice over the past 18 + months

Seriously - I hope she's confined to one room with her dinner delivered to her, no human contact for a fortnight.

Give her a taste of what isolating kids have had to tolerate for the last year. People will look back in horror at the official instructions given to parents who's kids were contacts of positive cases.

ElephantOfRisk · 29/08/2021 21:38

Agree, but also hope that they forget to let her out again....
