Guilt Free Railing 11

The end was not nigh, and still looking far far away, so here’s the latest thread.

Usual railing rules apply: all rails or good news welcome, no nauseating positivity or resilience wankery. 😃

I bumped into someone who works for public health Scotland and she mentioned that she thinks it will be great once the vaccine is approved for primary aged children.
Dh and I have agreed we won't vaccinate our kids against Covid. We don't believe the risk of Covid to be great enough to vaccinate with a relatively new vaccination. I don't understand enough about it to feel comfortable with it. Maybe in a years time I will.
I assume vaccinations will be done through school which means I'll have to send a form back saying I don't consent so the staff will know. This makes me feel uncomfortable. I'm worried they'll think I'm an antivaxxer or that I'm selfis.

Lockdownbear · 28/08/2021 22:52

Somehow I can't see primary kids being any time soon. They have barely agreed to secondary kids but they still aren't rolling it out plus the issues of vulnerable in the rest of the World need done too.

WouldBeGood · 28/08/2021 23:03

I’m waiting to see for ds13 too.

Some evidence one dose might be a good balance. But I need to be sure.

I wouldn't vaccinate mine (under 5) now, unless the evidence changes. As far as I can see they're in little danger of serious illness from covid but the vaccines remain experimental and will be experimental for a while yet. I've had mine, as has DH, but they can wait.

Scottishskifun · 29/08/2021 10:07

My DS has been much more ill with a recent cold then he was with covid!

At 2 he's not at any risk of being ill from it currently and whilst I believe firmly in vaccinations I don't believe in giving it to young children especially when there is a long way to go to get other countries adults vaccinated!

If in a few years it's a requirement to travel then we will reexamine it but by then there will be a lot more data

riverrunning · 29/08/2021 10:22

If it's safe, it should be available on a voluntary basis for people that want their 12 + to have it. Tough choice - it's so late in the game now I can't see how we'll avoid a winter lockdown even if we start vaccinating kids, due to the time it takes to roll out.

The next big spike is going to be university student led - what have we done to get those vaccine numbers up - that should be the focus now.

latissimusdorsi · 29/08/2021 10:37

Yes I'm sure there will be a student led spike but shouldn't necessitate any restrictions.
On the whole last year it was halls of residence which were the problem areas iirc, not actually in lectures.
Vast majority of students in halls will be under 25 and very unlikely to put strain on hospitals.
eldest DC is starting uni and double jagged exactly 2 weeks before she moves. All her friends, except 1, have had their jags in preparation for going to uni.
Its really being pushed big time for students.
Also going to be drop in clinics on campus to catch those who haven't been jagged or from overseas.

ssd · 29/08/2021 11:46

The spike in uni age kids is whats happening right now. With pubs open, nightclubs open and festivals happening, its spiking right now. I dont think uni will make much difference.

mibbelucieachwell · 29/08/2021 11:50

riverrunning Don't worry. There are other more targeted measures the SG could impose instead of a lockdown if they feel they need to. Proof of double vaccination for entry to nightclubs/pubs/festivals would be a possible one I guess.

I'm really hopeful for December, by then the percentage of double and triple vaccinated people will be very very high and a significant number of children will have post infection immunity.

To continue the Eurostar to Germany saga , DS still hasn't had anything from the vaccination certificate people. His case has been opened and flagged as high priority but still nothing. Biting my fingernails now.

ssd · 29/08/2021 11:58

Oh god. What a bloody awful worry you dont need @mibbelucieachwell

riverrunning · 29/08/2021 12:30

You've got to wonder what the point of a priority case is if it still takes so long - nightmare mibbie, fingers crossed.

Scottishskifun · 29/08/2021 14:42

My rail today is bloody colds and now zero resilience to them!
DS has brought a particularly nice one home from nursery, runny nose, streaming eyes, sinus and headaches and yes we covid tested ourselves (not DS I'm not putting him through any more unless it's absolutely urgent) before someone calls the MN covid police was negative!

We have all felt like rubbish I can't remember the last time I was knocked down so badly by a cold! Seems our immune system has completely forgotten what to do!

mibbelucieachwell · 29/08/2021 14:56

Really sorry to hear you're all poorly Scottishskifun

Update on DS' vaccination certificate saga: DS didn't get anything from them in time for his Eurostar departure. However, the border control people accepted his details on the NHSinform.Scot website. However, he had great difficulty getting his very large instrument on the train with him, even though he had followed their previous advice about booking an extra seat for it. Was nail biting stuff. So pleased for him. I would have been so annoyed for him if he'd missed out after jumping through so many hoops just bcos the Scottish system is a shambles. There have been reports of people getting certificates with the wrong details on and all sorts of problems apparently. Thank you again for the solidarity. Railing opportunity much appreciated.

Off to finish painting a drain pipe now, so help me. 😁Looking forward to a takeaway for dinner.

shouldistop · 29/08/2021 14:58

@mibbelucieachwell so pleased it worked out for him in the end!

shouldistop · 29/08/2021 14:59

@Scottishskifun that's rotten Sad I'm not feeling great actually, bit of an upset stomach, aches and tired.

WouldBeGood · 29/08/2021 15:20

Oh, I’m so pleased @mibbelucieachwell! What a relief for you

Hope you all feel better soon.

runningpink · 29/08/2021 16:22

I’m so glad your DS got away @mibbelucieachwell

Hope everyone feels better soon

I can’t shake off that horrible feeling that things are going to get worse again. Been anxious and on edge all day. My spare room however has been gutted!

ssd · 29/08/2021 16:57

Oh i'm sorry for those who feel unwell, we definitely have forgotten how to fight germs now we are all sanitised to the hilt Sad
But im glad you're ds got away @mibbelucieachwell, what a nail biting time you have all had.

In other news...why is it so bad up here? Its hellish in my area, England is open up more and cases aren't as high? Is it really schools???

ssd · 29/08/2021 16:59

@mibbelucieachwell, wheres he gone again and what is he doing?

ssd · 29/08/2021 16:59

My brain is a sieve

BroccoliFloret · 29/08/2021 17:01

@Haudyourwheesht

I don't understand why council places still have closed cafes. Kelvingrove, for example, have not opened their cafes or either of their gift shops. Surely they're money makers? They're bitching about being skint - surely over priced poor quality baguettes and coffee is the answer?? I certainly buy them.
Agree.

We visited Muiravonside park near Linlithgow yesterday. Sunny afternoon. Car park heaving. Lots of people around.

Cafe and visitor centre FIRMLY CLOSED. They could have made a packet selling ice cream, drinks and sandwiches.

ssd · 29/08/2021 17:03

Crazy these places are shut

riverrunning · 29/08/2021 17:32

Well the wine is open here, and the crisps - covid positives in one dc's class, the other dc is off school with a skin infection. Cheers!
