The end was not nigh, and still looking far far away, so here’s the latest thread.

Usual railing rules apply: all rails or good news welcome, no nauseating positivity or resilience wankery. 😃

I am but he's pretty ill, I'm not convinced he doesn't have it

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 25/08/2021 22:10

I am railing on behalf of parents of school children and teachers in schools. How dare JS claim a) cases are up because schools are back AND b) that mask-wearing is therefore even more necessary - BUT ONLY IN SCHOOLS! He's wrong on both counts.

WouldBeGood · 25/08/2021 22:24

He’s a dick

Lockdownbear · 25/08/2021 23:26

Maybe we should campaign for ScoGov to show solidarity with kids and wear their masks all day inc on Nicolas soapbox!

WouldBeGood · 26/08/2021 07:33

Just seen the Times reporting “possible circuit breaker lockdown” or other restrictions possible in Scotland. Hopefully it’s just dramatising, but I’m feeling super anxious at the prospect.

Railing against the fuckwits in charge here.

OP posts:
Lockdownbear · 26/08/2021 07:37

FFS I knew that would happen.
But you know what happened the last time the circuit breaker lasted 9mths. People will not buy into this time. You can stop people going to pubs and cafes but you can't (and won't) stop them gathering in houses.

The idea that it's safe to have coffee in a cafe with a dozen random folk but it's not safe to have coffee in a pals house with just two of you, just won't wash any more.

titsintiers · 26/08/2021 07:42

In the name of the wee manny @WouldBeGood what a load of shite. Surely Nic realises she can't keep us wrapped in steel wool forever?!

Lockdownbear · 26/08/2021 07:44

Not to mention is Boris going to cough up furlough money - no I doubt it.

I've just heard for a scout group and a BB group both trying to get back up and running, both struggling to get the numbers.
I knew at the beginning it's hard to get stuff up and running after they have been stopped, 1980s schools industrial action, took years for stuff to restart.
This could end up being exactly the same.

latissimusdorsi · 26/08/2021 07:48

I agree @Lockdownbear
People won't comply the way they've done in past, particularly the youngsters.
There's no incentive to comply.
Last time we were waiting for vaccine rollout.
There's nothing else to wait for now everyone's double jagged,

I think its all scaremongering

titsintiers · 26/08/2021 07:59

I don't think it's a great incentive to people who aren't vaccinated. I do think it'll convince some parents of teenagers though, and maybe that's the reason?

riverrunning · 26/08/2021 08:23

I can't see that they're incentivising it well either - they. We'd to announce a plan leading on boosters and increased vaccine out rather than masks and restrictions that don't work.

As it stands, why would I rush to vaccinate a teen now when it looks like they'll soon be back to online learning?

Psychologically they're doing the opposite of incentivising vaccine uptake by hinting at increased restrictions soon.

riverrunning · 26/08/2021 08:24

There's no carrot is there? Vaccinate your teens and we'll shut schools anyway, as we can do that and it's cheaper than furlough.

WouldBeGood · 26/08/2021 08:25

Yeah, I’m definitely not going to rush to vaccinate mine as I don’t believe that will be enough. Then it will be the next hurdle

Plus, nothing’s going to do more to get me back out to cafes and pubs and travel places than dangling the possibility of having them all taken away again.

Scottishskifun · 26/08/2021 08:36

No way in merry hell am I complying again with another lockdown! She can get to fuck!

Borris won't give her furlough money (good on him I say) and the economy is in a precarious position!

Its another scaremonger tactic to distract away from the fact that it was stupid to have a exit wave starting just as schools went back so she's wanting to deflect from the peak at this point being as a result of her delays!

riverrunning · 26/08/2021 08:38

How long to we reckon before universities switch back to fully online learning for this term?

WouldBeGood · 26/08/2021 08:44

Once again, dreadful anxiety for everyone. Especially businesses who are just back

randomsabreuse · 26/08/2021 08:50

All the younger kids' sports activities around us are doing well for members. I think venue availability is more of an issue. Possibly staffing if jobs have changed as well.

Swimming is still a disaster, now we just have queue and wait rather than booking, which is a pain with impatient younger children! As for swimming lessons and parent/toddler stuff - no such luck!

I've gone down the specific sports and music route with my kids rather than 'general' stuff like guides. Don't know if that's more general ...

latissimusdorsi · 26/08/2021 08:54

@riverrunning

And it makes no sense to do this if students are allowed to mix freely elsewhere!
Most Scottish unis are going with 1m distancing so students will be in a spaced out and controlled environment in class.
So why further damage the education of the next generation of doctors:scientists/engineers etc when they will actually be less risk in class than at their jobs in supermarkets, hospitality etc or round their mates for a party🤷🏼‍♀️

Lockdownbear · 26/08/2021 08:54

She seriously fucked up, both this summer and last.
Boris pushed ahead opening stuff as soon as the schools stopped she wanted to be 2 weeks behind him - except our schools stop 2 weeks before theirs - so really it's the end of the school holidays before restrictions in Scotland lifted both this year and last.

When the fuck will she learn?
Why do people still support her?

Lockdownbear · 26/08/2021 09:00

@randomsabreuse the sports have been allowed to operate indoors but guides and scouts etc haven't.
So the more general youth organisations if they had outdoor space with access to toilets they could operate. Needing toilets ruled out many parks and places esp in the evenings.

And because they haven't been running many kids have been joined sports which are running.

ADreadedSunnyDay · 26/08/2021 09:01

Meanwhile in my world an awful lot of parents continue to do daily lateral flow tests on their primary and nursery aged children - at some point they will get lucky and get a positive. I really struggle with the mindset and ethics here (unless extreme extenuating circumstances). When did this become ethical?

ResilienceWanker · 26/08/2021 09:04

I can't believe they're still wittering away about lockdowns. Haven't we moved on from anyone seeing that as a good idea when, what, 80% of the eligible population is fully vaccinated? Where else is there to go? (And yes, if even that proportion of vaccination doesn't take away the threat it's not going to encourage the remainder to come forward!) Any reintroduced restrictions will surely affect the young and those reliant on government/council/ volunteer services most, too. They won't be able to close businesses because furlough ends next month (and is already quite tapered off) so it will be public and third sector things that are closed "as a precaution"... Libraries, children's centres, toddler groups, council leisure centres not saying schools because I can't even.... It makes me so angry...

Re universities, if any kind of social distancing is brought back in, I think that will scupper lots of teaching plans. DHs department has massively increased numbers this year (who'd have predicted teacher assessed grades would mean more students would reach the offer they had for uni?!) and they can't fit everyone into the allocated rooms with 1m distancing, which was their plan. So they're having to increase room numbers by 5 or so (still keeping under 50 per room). But if 1m is brought back, they'll just have to revert to online. Amusingly, the rule is now that if you're an employee of the university you can remove your mask when seated, but if you're not, you need to keep it on. So he's having meetings with PhD students where the student should have their masks on when they're discussing the thesis, but can take them off when they're discussing the students' teaching responsibilities Grin Unsurprisingly, in practice he's making them a coffee and letting them nurse it over the course of the meeting...

Lockdownbear · 26/08/2021 09:04

God only knows why people are testing young children. I don't know how Lateral flow tests work but the swabs for standard tests are brutal enough for little kids.
