The end was not nigh, and still looking far far away, so here’s the latest thread.

Usual railing rules apply: all rails or good news welcome, no nauseating positivity or resilience wankery. 😃

I'm with you @OnceUponAWhine
I wish people would stop testing when they have no symptoms. And doing lateral flow tests (unless working in certain settings). We do not test for other transmissible illnesses 'just in case'. Wish people would just accept Covid is everywhere and as long as people aren't getting seriously ill, dying in 10,000s we have to accept the other risks

ElephantOfRisk · 25/08/2021 14:53

Yep, when I feel perfectly well, I wonder what is wrong so take paracetamol just in case I am ill and I don't know it...

Seriously, just take normal precautions when around vulnerable people as if you have the flu and make masks optional for kids and adults.

ResilienceWanker · 25/08/2021 15:07

@Covids

Aarghhh! So my family were given home test kits (along with all the other people who turned up at Cumbernauld and were told the systems were down). They got home, did them and then discovered that the postal bags they were given didn’t have the important purple label that you’re supposed to stick on them to track results so they’re no use to man nor beast! My DP phoned the 119 number to be told they can’t help and can’t communicate with the Cumbernauld test site (probably all gone home). Said we could try driving over to Cumbernauld this evening and they ‘might’ be open again but they don’t know for sure. We’re right on border of East Dunbartonshire and Glasgow and they expect us to drive over there again on the off chance?!! My DS actually ordered some proper home test kits on Monday night before booking a drive through appointment - they haven’t even turned up yet.

I’m totally aghast at the uselessness of it all and could cry!!

Oh God covids - that is all such a shambles! Admittedly, it sounds like the cockup with the test centre could just be a one off, but the test kits being faulty, and not arriving when ordered does sound like there is something else going on. We've ordered lots (well, at least 5) home test kits over the past year and they've all arrived the next day, or first thing the following day if ordered after about 9pm... So they could well be overloaded (not surprising given the current system of anyone with any close contact needing a test in order to go back to school/work). Which isn't great.

Our class has had 4 positive cases in the past 3 days, which isn't brilliant. Though the worst is headaches/ stuffy noses, apparently. It is really unclear what is classing as a close contact in these situations though... Apparently 3 of the 4 children sit on one table, but the parent of the original case didn't have the contact details of the other children on the table, and the school wasn't allowed to provide them, yet test and protect hadn't contacted the school to get them to inform the parents... Hence why they set up a panic-wattsapp group which has encouraged everyone else to test and unearth the remaining 3! Which it seems has used up all of Scotland's supply of PCR tests in the past 2 days - so sorry about that... Grin (Being an antisocial git, I only found out about this group this morning and am already too scared to post anything like "stop fecking testing..." ).

@TeenTraumaTrials

Railing about John Swinney's interview this morning

"Scotland's record number of Covid cases is partly being fuelled by the return of schools after the summer holidays, the deputy first minister has said.

John Swinney said the data showed that high numbers of young people had tested positive in recent days.

And he said the case for secondary pupils continuing to wear facemasks in school was growing "ever stronger"."

This is all so far beyond ridiculous it makes me want to weep. How many of these were actually cases (and by that I mean ill as that is the actual clinical definition of a case) and how many people who foolishly tested their children before going back to school. It was reported yesterday that people with Delta have 300 times higher viral load than with other variants - a flimsy, ill-fitting paper mask that is on and off and pulled up and down all day is bugger all protection.

Whaaat? Yes, increasing cases in classes where pupils are already having to wear face masks is sure fire proof that them wearing face masks stops them spreading it HmmConfused
WouldBeGood · 25/08/2021 15:31

This could be promising though as usually whatever Swinney says is shortly overruled on the grounds that it was pish

Very true! Grin
riverrunning · 25/08/2021 16:32

None of the increasing measures prevented the last lockdowns.

I wonder if we'll see a rush to vaccinate teens and boosters - that's at the very least a path not yet invalidated by previous experience.

titsintiers · 25/08/2021 16:34

I assumed his chat was to instil fear into teens/ parents to get them vaccinated

Eh???
Heartening to see the face masks doing such a good jobHmm

Scottishskifun · 25/08/2021 17:10

Soooo a few days ago it was noooo its not fuelled by school return by Jason Leitch and today by John Swinney its caused by school return?
Well which one is it?! Do we believe the clinical director or the covid minister??!!

The phrase don't know their arse from their elbow springs to mind!

Ha, so true.

At least he clocked up a Covid tsar media appearance, wasn’t he on holiday/had no comments when cases were at their highest over the school summer hols?

Oh they know the difference, because they talk out of one of those most of the time.
Groovee · 25/08/2021 17:38

Blame the schools... but not the nightclubs.

Good point, well made Grin

Also, covid must be psychic as it somehow knew the schools would be going back at least a couple of weeks before they actually did. And to spread most in the late teens and early 20s first. But no, definitely nothing to do with the nightclubs and general relaxation. It's all those stinky schoolkids...

WouldBeGood · 25/08/2021 18:00

If they are saying schools not clubs etc then it’s clear that the masks are making things worse then 🤷🏻‍♀️

Flossy05 · 25/08/2021 18:13

So fed up with the kids being blamed for all of this. Adults are mingling/socialising/working with no masks required but it’s the masked up kids fault that it’s spreading. By that logic the masks are causing the increase Confused

Does anyone care anymore what causes the rise ? But yeah school kids are easy target which is weird as it drastically increased before schools were really back
forfucksakenett · 25/08/2021 18:35

Obviously I don't know what is causing the rise but I do know (anecdotally at least) that's the vast majority of kids are not really wearing a mask. It sits on their chin or under their nose.

I follow management advice and ask them to put it back over their nose but it's a losing battle and I'm increasingly uncomfortable with it so I've developed selective blindness for most of the day. They look miserable.

I think it's a mixture of heat and generally being completely fed up.

ssd · 25/08/2021 18:52

Poor wee buggers, its bad enough in a shop but in schools it must be awful.
In better news ds is negative.

Scottishskifun · 25/08/2021 19:04

I think they are blaming it so that they don't have to answer the real question of it was known that relaxation of rules causes a spike so why didn't they do it sooner to avoid the cross over with school returns!

Its not school kids fault at all and it's already well known with research into delta that sitting in a poorly ventilated area even with a mask on does not stop it spreading or catching it as the viral particles required are much less and easily escape from the masks even if they are worn properly!

I think the SG just don't want to accept they have minimal control over it! If masks were so effective then numbers wouldn't be going up in school age kids! Or in fact way before with different control measures.

It's impossible to control a highly mutating virus which has been present for over 18 months! Very different in countries which got to zero but they are now struggling with delta and low vaccination numbers.

I’m glad they’re doing that, how utterly miserable and hot for them otherwise, especially this week ☀️. I wonder how many of them will speak out against the masks when they see their Welsh and English peers returning as normal over the next few weeks.

The weather was so gorgeous today but I tore the mask off after a short, sweltering bus ride.

Great news ssd re no covid.

Great news @ssd
