The end was not nigh, and still looking far far away, so here’s the latest thread.

Usual railing rules apply: all rails or good news welcome, no nauseating positivity or resilience wankery. 😃

@OnceUponAWhine they will check if you ever want to sell your house. We're not planning on moving at any point in the near future, but it's the sort of thing that they will definitely highlight on a homebuyer's report.

Groovee · 20/08/2021 11:59

3 texts from test and protect. All saying the exact same thing.

TheGenealogist · 20/08/2021 12:03

Also railing about the text from school "A positive Covid test has been identified in your child's year group". What year group would that be then? Should I guess which one of my kids you are referring to?

In fact, I know what year group it is as it's one of DDs friends. But still what is the point of telling you that there is a positive case, and that test and protect will be in touch if you need to isolate. Pointless text, waste of time for all concerned.

OnceUponAWhine · 20/08/2021 12:06

Apparently many schools have already put out messaging to say that there’s a case linked to school. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a direct case in a classroom. It’s been suggested by a friend (NHS worker and education role connection) and then I can see a comment on another thread that confirms that, the letter is actually a gentle nudge to the parent community to encourage testing at primary level. This is a worrying comms line from schools (made by the councils) if true.

I will not be testing the DC if they have shown no symptoms or hasn’t been identified an obvious close contact.
In fact, I won’t even test if it’s obviously covid and will just keep them home until all seems better. The tests are distressing for young children, we shouldn’t normalise continuous testing of ‘healthy’ children.

mibbelucieachwell · 20/08/2021 12:22

Morning all. Good to hear about tests coming back negative.

random That's so rubbish. 🤞🤞

Apparently the increase in cases in UK is mostly being driven by young adults. There was a festival in Cornwall attended by mostly older teens which seems to have been a superspreader event with literally hundreds of linked cases. We're getting Transmit but it's not a sleeping/having sex in tents thing and more young people will be doubly vaccinated so hopefully will have less impact.

Not in the spirit of railing, sorry to be optimistic Grinbut I was heartened by reading that being doubly vaccinated and catching covid seems to confer excellent immunity from even mild covid for probably a loooong time. Will try to remember where I read that and link. Presumably community covid levels will (eventually) become much much lower.

I'm hoping we're only a few, bumpy, weeks away from this. Not that the SG would like anyone to think that. No, they're happy for unqualified spokespeople to frighten everybody with talk of variants of concern and possible further restrictions. All those supposed scientists enjoying being celebrity doom mongers give me the rage. They're hardly ever actual virologists. Just because they're a Prof, doesn't make them qualified to comment on the 'science'. Eg, I googled Prof Graham Smedley who likes to peddle doom. He's an epidemiology mathematical modeller or something like that at the London School of Health and Tropical Hygiene. Nowhere on t'internet can I find what his first degree was in. Presumably cos he's just some bloke who can do a bit of maths and stats. Christina Pagel is another one. She's a mathematician. Giving her opinion on covid as if her opinion is worth anything more than anyone on here's is. 😡I mean, we can all read studies and look at the mountain of data published by ONS and Public Health Scotland and England.

@Sandseasun that’s nuts about the app

Good post @mibbelucieachwell I personally benefit from reading optimistic and intelligent summaries on days like this. Thanks for non railing thoughtsSmile

WouldBeGood · 20/08/2021 12:31

Well said @mibbelucieachwell.

Though from my brief foray to transmt, tents were not a prerequisite to close physical contact 😂😂

(For the youngsters, not me!)

Lunchtime rail about the new ScotGov and NHS ads, sans Jason though. The ‘reduce the risk, Scotland’ ones, which feature an apron-clad ‘mum’ (so relatable, of course) running around opening windows and saying we should be outside to stay safe- even if we’ve had both doses of the vaccine, let’s choose to be outside, etc.

I’m really curious as to who signs these off and actually thinks they serve a purpose other than making me want to smash my tv screen they are truly hideous.

(Memory if someone on here DC going to a casting for these ads, maybe it was for this ‘family’ guilt trip one?)

Direwolfwrangler · 20/08/2021 13:33

The adverts give me the rage. I hate the ‘it’s kind to remind’ ones re logging test results. All they do is make me switch off!

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 20/08/2021 15:24

Apparently the SNP and Greens formalising the arrangement that has been in place for what, 5.5 years?, makes it ‘impossible’ for Westminster to say no to Indyref2. Personally, I’m not sure what’s changed since yesterday 🤷🏻‍♀️ (On Indyref anyway, obviously women’s rights are now significantly more at risk now).

ElephantOfRisk · 20/08/2021 15:32

Nothing has changed. Polls haven't moved significantly from the last indref, despite brexit, boris and whatever else AND they've spent the campaign money on who knows what.

It's all bluff and bluster and even those who are pro indy must see that they can't run a piss up in a brewery. They aren't going to get another referendum much less a vote for independence in the near future and the mismanagement and poor quality legislation etc etc is going to make the situation worse should a miracle occur.

It's utter madness. I read that the Greens both wanted to form the power share AND still retain their spot to challenge at FMQ. Confused

randomsabreuse · 20/08/2021 15:56

All negative, results came in just before lunchtime so P2 went to school. Let in by head who was pleased that we'd a) tested and b) sent DC in for the half day once freed!

Very relieved but not looking forward to 2yo starting nursery in November as he'll be in and out with random fevers...

OnceUponAWhine · 20/08/2021 16:15

Oh please let me rail about the press conference this afternoon. Stood at podiums with flags in background to announce the SNP/Greens dirty deal. They’re on such a power trip. Absolutely deluded.

Groovee · 20/08/2021 17:14

You may be surprised. We didn't have as much illness as we expected last year.

Just received the same. DD is S1. No idea if it’s her year group. As much use to us as a chocolate teapot.
Scottishskifun · 20/08/2021 17:51

@elephantofrisk yep! I think many see SNP as a means to an end but a bit like brexit it will be them negotiating a potential divorce settlement...... Given they have massive failings on pretty much most things they are in charge of be it education, drugs deaths, women or public spending (gievn Scotland gets more per head then anywhere else in the UK as well!) I really don't understand why people would risk it!

But if higher taxes, higher food costs due to a hard border, pension issues and no EU membership for at least 5 years due to Spain veto (which was publicly made many times) then yep it's a great idea...... 🙄 Remind to sign me up for that one!

OnceUponAWhine · 20/08/2021 19:03

Anyone else notice how many schools have been informed of a case today, conveniently on a Friday giving you more than 48hours to test without impacting your school week? 🤔
you’re not impacted by this case in school today…but we’re telling you about it anyway and maybe we’ve worried you into taking a test anyway this weekend?

🤔

(By schools, I mean councils and by councils I mean SG)

ResilienceWanker · 20/08/2021 19:47

Is this the "warn and inform" letter we've been told we'd get? I know they like their little 2 word phrases, but that is a bit "protect and survive" to me (1970s nuclear attack advice slogan Grin). Presumably, yes, it is to encourage people to be more aware of symptoms and maybe test "just to be on the safe side" without any further info as to how likely it is that you need to be "warned", or even informed. Does seem a bit sneaky.

Current shit-covid thing at school is lunches. They're still eating in their classrooms, but the choice of meals, rather than being a hot option (veggie), or a baked potato, or a selection of sandwiches, as it was for all last year, is now a meat option or a veggie option (so one choice for veggie children). And around 2 days a week the veggie option is pasta, which is cooked in another school, brought to ours in big vats, slowly congealing, and then dished out. Unsurprisingly, it's not pleasant, and DS refused it even in P1 so has managed to avoid it ever since by choosing something else on offer... But now it's that or nothing. So I'm having to be a lot more organised with packed lunches this year. And I'm not an organised packed lunch kind of parent...

shouldistop · 20/08/2021 19:54

My poor boy was so tired after school that he was sobbing about nothing really Sad his first full week and the most time he's ever been away from me in a week. Wee soul.

riverrunning · 20/08/2021 19:57

My dc1 got so, so tired in p1, i fully appreciated why the school holidays are needed at that point. The term running up to December feels very long.

ResilienceWanker · 20/08/2021 19:58

Awwww. Bless him. It's good that he seems to be enjoying it, but, yes, it is exhausting for the new ones (and some of the old ones). I remember DS coming home and going to bed at, like 6.30 a few times in his first half term as he was soooooo shattered! Actually saying... I'm a bit tired, I want to go to bed. He NEVER does that!

shouldistop · 20/08/2021 20:04

He does love going which I'm grateful for. My godson is at the same school and cries every morning which is heartbreaking.

School holidays definitely needed, I'm already looking forward to the September weekend. I've really missed him this week.

ElephantOfRisk · 20/08/2021 20:21

I prefer it when they start back midweek, it's a bit like a phased return, so they do do 2 or 3 days and then have the weekend before getting into a full week again.
