The end was not nigh, and still looking far far away, so here’s the latest thread.

Usual railing rules apply: all rails or good news welcome, no nauseating positivity or resilience wankery. 😃

And, as social distancing gone, why do we still have to prebook slots for galleries, etc?

@Y0uCann0tBeSer10us I'd imagine some are still choosing to wear masks. It would be nice to have the same choice here.

Yeah I don't get that about social distancing apparently stopped either. It hasn't made any difference to anything I do. Still have to book things, children still on staggered starts & breaks at school etc.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 19/08/2021 20:37

I completely agree @shouldistop, I think mask wearing should be optional. There doesn't seem to be strong evidence that it helps with infection rates, even if those were what was important (not so much any more). People who feel safe wearing one can continue to do so, but let the rest of us use common sense and, perhaps more importantly, regain a sense of control over our lives. It makes so much difference psychologically to be able to trust your own instincts instead of being nannied. Then there are people who struggle with them of course, often belittled in this whole debate - make it optional and there is no excuse to bully/judge them any more.

ssd · 19/08/2021 21:20

I'm scared to not wear a mask now. Which is ridiculous. I've managed over 50 years to exist without a mask and now because of government propaganda I'm scared to not wear one.

I didn't realise I'm so easily swayed.

riverrunning · 19/08/2021 21:22

It's our new habit - I got on the bus with two kids who no longer have to wear masks today and they insisted on wearing them as 'they weren't safe without them'.

Sandseasun · 19/08/2021 21:24

You couldn’t make it up. I’m railing that the gov have asked a Denmark company to do a digital app for us to travel at the cost of £600,000
Surely we have that expertise in Scotland or blooming well use the UK one. Oh no she couldn’t possible do that!

randomsabreuse · 19/08/2021 21:32

Just had to Covid test the family as 2yo has (predictably exactly 1 week post sis starting school) run up a high 38s temperature. We did everyone as if we're negative we're all free even if he's positive. Also he's got previous for odd symptoms with a fever and for getting random fevers as sis goes back to school. Not looking forward to him starting nursery on that account!

Better bloody be negative as we've been everywhere last few days - 2 sport groups for DS and then today (before temperature appeared) to playpark, pharmacy to get lateral flows (needed prevcompetition under my sporting governing body rules), post office and supermarket.

Hope they're quick back and negative as DD has her first school party on Saturday and I have my first running race in what feels like forever on Sunday. Given every other race I've entered this year has cancelled I'm very meh about entering anything else as it's either postponed to random dates next year or a child will be ill and take me out.

So frustrated!!!

Scottishskifun · 19/08/2021 21:41

I'm railing against the advert which advises me that it will be law me to install and have interlinked fire alarm systems by next Feb....
So I would need to pay £220 to install a heat alarm, a fire alarm in my living room and in the upstairs bedroom........ Despite the fact that I have a CO2 alarm and already have 3 smoke alarms in my house..... Which work...... 🙄

Yeah until I move house they can piss off with that one!

runningpink · 19/08/2021 21:52

I can understand interlinked in a large house but otherwise don’t see the point. I have normal alarms already.

Trying to pin down an electrician will be a nightmare and I also can’t afford that sort of money when I have no job. Will also require redecorating/touching up areas at more cost.

The advert also says pick up a leaflet in your local library…em they are only open a few days and hours so that’s unlikely! 🙄

Scottishskifun · 19/08/2021 21:58

Yep I do get it if you have multiple floors!
But to tell homeowners they have to pay for interlinked systems when the fire service have stated they would still be providing properties with no devices a stand alone fire alarm it just seems a bit like a money spender for very little difference in small properties!

ElephantOfRisk · 19/08/2021 22:06

It's another one size fits all approach. I have 2 interlinked smoke alarms, they work fine. I have a separate carbon monoxide alarm in the room with the boiler, it also works but none of that is good enough.

Also note that all new cars will have a speed limiter from next August. I'm not condoning speeding but it's yet more control.

WouldBeGood · 19/08/2021 22:09

The increasing control and removal of free will is dystopian

Not sure if it's dumb and dumber or more shit and shitter.
Scottishskifun · 19/08/2021 22:17

@WouldBeGood

And tomorrow is reported to be when the Axis of Evil with the greens is announced
Oh yes will look forward to that one where large areas of the North East Scotland are likely to be thrown under a bus........ Quite glad they don't have control on that one but the language will probably be strong to appease the green party! All from the govt that proposed independence would be funded by the oil industry..... 🤔

Should state I fully believe in climate change and reducing emissions but well aware that's its not as easy as just turning off the switch for fossil fuels. Also stating that loads of renewable energy sources can cover usage when a part of that number comes from burning wood pellets shipped from the US to me is a bit hypocritical! Or the fact that places like Shetland a lot of heating/hot water for public buildings etc comes from burning waste yet nothing I have been seen to replace those sorts of systems has been proposed!

WouldBeGood · 19/08/2021 22:23

I don’t think the greens care much about that: their all consuming interest is the gender pish, and the erasure of women

OP posts:
IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 19/08/2021 23:01

Yeah they became a one issue party a long time ago, and it has fuck all to do with anything green Angry

LizzieMacQueen · 19/08/2021 23:31

The fire alarm thing bothers me too. There's a suggestion that your home insurance may be void if you haven't complied.

Is the heat alarm only required in your kitchen if that also is your most habited room (which it is in our house)?

Then a smoke alarm in top & bottom hallway? Pain in the ass as I've just redecorated. I think I'll go for the long life battery rather than wired in. I'm not attaching it anywhere near my ceiling rose.

Hadn't heard about the speed limiters on new cars.

ssd · 20/08/2021 08:56

The fire alarm thing is surely a con. We cant afford it, we've both lost part of our family income in the pandemic and i cant afford to fit new alarms. We both work but in low waged jobs. Its so unfair this alarm law is coming in just now.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 20/08/2021 09:05

The fire alarm law, as well as being a huge financial burden, just seems really unnecessary for most properties. Perhaps ministers in massive properties are in a different situation, but if my fire alarm goes off I can already hear it from anywhere in the house because I have a normal sized property! Something else that just hasn't been thought through very well.

TheGenealogist · 20/08/2021 09:07

I have no idea whether we comply with the fire alarm thing or not. We had the loft converted about 8 years ago and at that point had to replace battery smoke alarms with mains wired ones, we have one on each level. But heat alarm in the kitchen? We have some sort of alarm in the kitchen, it keeps going off when DS cremates his toast. Might be a heat sensor too, no idea.

Apparently there is now a requirement for "one smoke alarm installed in the room most frequently used for general daytime living purposes" which we definitely don't have. And we definitely don't have a carbon monoxide detector either.

TheGenealogist · 20/08/2021 09:11

Oh and the smoke alarm in the room you use the most - why? We don't smoke. Nobody ever smokes in my house. We don't have an open fire. We switch the telly off before going to bed. The kitchen smoke alarm and the hall smoke alarm are no more than 20 feet away.

What are they expecting might spontaneously combust in my lounge when I'm sitting on the sofa? (Apart from me with anger reading about the SNP exercising ever more control over our lives that is)

OnceUponAWhine · 20/08/2021 10:00

As if they will ever check? Are they even working with insurance companies on this- so if you reside in Scotland, you’ll be penalised (££££) for not having them installed? How will that work? Yet another case of overreach by the SG. Remember it was delayed as originally due to be rolled out in 2020. Why is it back on the table already?

Wondering what today’s squirrel will be- to cover the noise around the greens and the subsequent promotion to pretendy government roles for those that didn’t earn the right to be promoted.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 20/08/2021 11:53

We got FireAngel alarms on a good deal on Amazon - keep your eyes peeled. No electrician needed, no need to redecorate either, just 5 minutes to install. If you want them, that is.

We're just back from a week in England. Masks were still being worn more than we expected, in shops and in hospitality venues, especially by staff.
