The end was not nigh, and still looking far far away, so here’s the latest thread.

Usual railing rules apply: all rails or good news welcome, no nauseating positivity or resilience wankery. 😃

Absolutely agree @OnceUponAWhine

It’s just fuelling anxiety now

Cases don't matter. Who cares if someone who has had two vaccinations has covid? Utterly irrelevant.

Hospital admissions and deaths matter and they are LOW and DECREASING.

Scottishskifun · 19/08/2021 19:05

@Lockdownbear couldn't agree more DS goes ape each time we even drive in now 😔 it's difficult to explain to a 2 year old! He's had it and has several months at least left of high immunity!

WouldBeGood · 19/08/2021 19:10

Exactly @TheGenealogist. It’s all doing my head in.

You fitness ladies are putting me to shame. I could do with loosing a few lb. Any tips?

@Lockdownbear, as it ever was, eat less and move more...Grin

I'm not doing well on exercise but i've slowly slowly been dropping and if I average it out since lockdown started, i'm losing about a pound and a bit a month. Which sounds like nothing, but i'm only about 5 pounds from a normal BMI now, though probably about a stone to lose to be comfortable.

I think it feels more sustainable this way as I've not actually been on a diet, i've just cut down portions a bit and have swapped my evening treat for an ice-lolly but honestly if I fancy something more I just have it.

I'm trying to go back to doing intermittent fasting (8 hours eating zone and 16 no eating zone) as I found that pretty good to stick to to stop me snacking, but i think that's easier when I was going in to the office as less temptation to eat breakfast/mid morning.

runningpink · 19/08/2021 19:22

Thanks for the reassurance folks. The fear if lockdown is always there in the background so when I see things like numbers increasing I panic!

In terms of fitness tips. Im probably the wrong person at the moment.
But meeting a friend helps as less chance of changing your mind.
Scheduling some sort of routine. I find if I go out first thing I feel good the rest of the day and I don’t have time to talk myself out of it.
Sign up for a class so your committed.
Find something you enjoy

Maybe we need a Scotsnet accountability exercise thread to motivate and inspire us all

runningpink · 19/08/2021 19:24

Oh I have another rail!

Finally got my check up at dentist. They cancelled three times cos you know covid.
It’s been 18 months since my last visit.
I now need a filling…first available appointment is middle of November! 🙄

riverrunning · 19/08/2021 19:25

I'm terrified of another bout of homeschool, and lockdown. Not only the awful lockdown with schools shut but all the fear and not seeing anyone and how long it all takes to get back to anything like normality.

I've got to join a gym - it's been probably 5 years since I did any exercise and it's so bad for my health.

ssd · 19/08/2021 19:26

Its so bad. Im surprised any of us have teeth left

Lidlfix · 19/08/2021 19:26

The intermittent fasting Elephant- what hours did you eat and not eat? My friend did really well losing weight with it, I am also interested in the other benefits it brings.

ssd · 19/08/2021 19:27

Im worried about a lockdown on my dcs aged early 20s, i dont think they could take it.

My friend has been removed from her dentist list for not attending since 2019🙄
WouldBeGood · 19/08/2021 19:29

I’m doing loads of exercise. But still fat as a pig. But I do think I look better and am quite pissed off with the lack of noticing of this by my nearest and dearest!

On the other hand, my dentist is totally normal 🤷🏻‍♀️

@OnceUponAWhine

I say again, wasn’t this just the way pre 2020, many of us walking around, socialising, going into the office via public transport with a whole raft of viruses, bugs etc. Most of the time we had absolutely no idea we were carrying anything. Haven’t we just reached that point again now, but with-hopefully- more people washing hands and randoms not snuggling up to you on the train/bus. Testing serves no real purpose for our day to day lives other than to enable restrictions to continue and for overreaching governments to introduce vaccine passports shareholders of the pharma industry to get richer. Or am I missing something?

(Actual baulk at the idea of spitting in a pot at the workplace for testing. I hope that method doesn’t get rolled out 🤢)

I totally agree! I have no idea how many cases of, for example flu or chicken pox there are in Scotland every day. But if I did know, and knew they were rising, I might be concerned. Especially if I knew the government was itching to impose restrictions on society to bring them down. It may make me less likely to go out if I didn't have to, and if I had to work, it might just make me anxious and unhappy at having to put myself at risk. So I'd rather not know, really! And I definitely wouldn't test myself to see if I had it without symptoms, even though both those diseases can be fatal and can spread before symptoms come on.

Of course, some things are useful to know. There are measles outbreaks every now and again (as the 00s kids whose parents didn't vaccinate them cos of autism come together in university towns) and DH went to get a shot a few years ago as it wasn't routinely available when he was a child and he wasn't sure he was immune. So that public health info was useful and triggered a particular beneficial behaviour. Knowing there were however many thousand cases of an unavoidable and likely mild respiratory disease, probably less so...

The pot spitting I think would just be an alternative to swabbing, for people who can't tolerate the throat/ nostril thing. I'd probably rather do spitting than swabbing tbh, though neither are my idea of a fun night out. Though it looks like it won't be going anywhere as a method any time soon!

Oh, ffs. I'm sorry about that. This is also what I'm worried about for me. I had a wisdom tooth removed and a filling in the tooth in front of that (which the WT was in the way of) in Feb 2020. It was my first ever filling (and fucking traumatic) and the dentist was a bit worried the same thing could happen on the other side. She was considering removing the WT to make it easier to clean the one in front, and so prevent the need for a filling, but decided against that, as that was the traumatic bit! Her famous last words were "oh, well we'll keep an eye on it over the next few appointments" and I haven't been able to go since. If covid makes me have to have nasty dental work that could have been avoided, I won't be impressed.
Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 19/08/2021 19:51

Apparently our dentist is only doing treatment for private patients now which is awesome 🙄. I'd definitely recommend joining a gym @riverrunning, the routine of it is kind of shaming me into doing exercise, and it is helping with a lot of the muscular niggles I've acquired after 18 months of working from home already. Plus it's forcing me to interact with people and do 'normal' stuff, and is some time to myself without the kids, which is really helping with my anxiety issues.

shouldistop · 19/08/2021 19:56

It's been a month since masks were dropped in England. Has anyone been keeping an eye on the case numbers down south? Is there any proof that Scotland keeping the legal requirement for masks has helped our case numbers at all?

ResilienceWanker · 19/08/2021 19:56

@Lidlfix

The intermittent fasting Elephant- what hours did you eat and not eat? My friend did really well losing weight with it, I am also interested in the other benefits it brings.
I did this too, really just as a way of controlling calorie intake rather than for the "proper" benefits. I've lost about a stone since Feb, which is pretty shit, but I was only just overweight then and am now comfortably "healthy" (ha!) if at the upper end. But I've found it really easy, and apart from the time limit, I haven't really limited anything else, which I would prob have to do for serious weight loss! But I'm a carb fiend and not giving that up. Or cake. Or wine. I have a black coffee at breakfast time, white coffee at 11 (which isn't strictly fasting, but I don't really care) and then lunch at about 12.30, dinner at 7 ish, and then mint tea at bedtime. I sometimes do drink wine in the evenings but only at weekends, and if I'm away or something I will have proper breakfast, but find it easy enough to stop that before it becomes a habit Grin
Lidlfix · 19/08/2021 20:01

I think I could do that Resilience. I enjoy hot drinks and keep myself going until lunch that way. Can you recommend a book/app or anything ?

ElephantOfRisk · 19/08/2021 20:01

@Lidlfix

I did 12 until 8 @Lidlfix, so basically skip breakfast, have lunch at 12, dinner at 5ish and then a wee snack before 8.

It does give a lot of other health benefits. A friend of mine got much more into it than me and cured herself of a lot of gastro issues and sleep problems and various other stuff.

Honestly after a few days you don't miss breakfast at all. I noticed that when I get hungry, if i ignore it, 10 minutes later i'm not hungry anymore.

It's also really good for diabetes if that applies.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/08/2021 20:05

Friend got involved in lots of FB groups I think. It's supposed to be more like humans would have evolved. i.e. get up and go foraging so light lunchy type thing and then hunters would maybe bring meat to eat once a day and that would be your lot. We were never supposed to have 3 meals a day (plus supper!)

WouldBeGood · 19/08/2021 20:05

There’s been no surge in England since mandatory masks were dropped.

Pointless security blankets then as I thought. Well hopefully there will now be pressure on wee nippy to do the same up here.

Nope, none at all. Infection levels in England dropped sharply after the mask mandate was dropped on freedom day and have remained largely stable since. If anything, it's the other nations that are rising again. Worth bearing in mind of course that people might be choosing to wear masks in England now, but there's no evidence that putting it in law rather than trusting the people has any beneficial effect.

Definitely time to lose the mask mandate
