Is the end nigh?

It is a bit crazy that not all teachers will have been jagged by the start of the new year. I thought all over 18s should have been given the vaccine by mid July, so 20s/30s should have had theirs by the end of June, meaning their 8 weeks would be up over the summer or shortly after the start of term - though maybe the SG didn't meet that target? It can't be long, anyway - and I think the mRNA vaccines are fine to give at a shorter interval too, if the worry is catching covid in between the two jags rather than building up the full potential immunity between jags (which is presumably the worry here). We do seem to have had a big slowdown of vaccines from early June (?) though, which can't all be caused by the necessary 8 week delay, or else there'd have been a pick up again from the end of July.

I don't think there should have been prioritisation of teachers initially though (other than if they were CEV or CV so eligible for a jag earlier than their age group). The JCVI always said that the aim of the vaccine programme was to reduce hospitalisations and deaths, so prioritising those more likely to need hospital care (i.e. older people first, and their carers) was really the only way that could have been done. You may think it wasn't properly managed if non-frontline NHS were included in the first round (though non frontline NHS are often critical to the work of the front line folks), or disagree with their aim, and think it should have been to stop as many people catching the disease as possible. But we are where we are and I don't think it's fair that children are subject to further restrictions for maybe 6 weeks- maybe more - because the government failed to vaccinate enough of their teachers by the start of term.

The tiers system (sorry sorry, ‘protection levels’) was daft in many ways but at least it gave some sense of when things might change. Go above this many cases and you’re in Level 3 and that thing is shut, go down to this many cases and it can open again, sort of thing.

Saying we’re leaving the levels system but still keeping restrictions in place makes it all feel so bleakly endless. If ‘beyond level zero’ isn’t enough to lift restrictions then what is?

WouldBeGood · 11/08/2021 14:21

SNP also “revising” their commitment to upgrade all play parks as they didn’t allocate enough money for it.

What a shower

ResilienceWanker · 11/08/2021 14:23

Agreed! It's nice that we've left the fucking tiers behind, but we now seem to be in a no man's land of restrictions, but nothing to guide us as to when those restrictions might be lifted. If we're doing well enough to leave tiers, I'm not sure how much better we need to be doing to leave masks, or signing into pubs, or removing those bloody one way stickers from libraries, or reopening children's areas in museums... At the moment, Edinburgh's case numbers are hovering around between tier 3 and 4 Shock and we're obviously not in as bad a position as needing to close pubs and not serve booze with a meal (because 150 cases per 100k isn't leading to 15 hospitalisations any more, but

Groovee · 11/08/2021 14:23

When the numbers start rising then it's going to be schools blamed. Not the maskless night clubs.

I love my job, but I am still bound by restrictions. I'm tempted to find a metre stick and a loud speaker thingy and bellow loudly about the distancing... I'm sure NS will then announce that Groovee wumman is taking this too far.

ResilienceWanker · 11/08/2021 14:27

(not that the stickers and chair kidnapping actually did anything to reduce cases or hospitalisations in the first place, mind you!)

What a surprise wouldbegood! I'd never have imagined that. Are they using the money for our free bikes and laptops we were promised?

WouldBeGood · 11/08/2021 14:28

I’m sure they are @ResilienceWanker 😂

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 11/08/2021 14:30

Scotrailing: their staff are to stop enforcing the wearing of face coverings and leaving it to personal responsibility. Hurray! The tide might be turning.

They say they’re putting on more trains in case people are anxious.

Guys I need snack ideas for school.
So far I'm thinking banana, apple, oaty bar. Can't think what else. Ds1 asked for a plum but I think 1 isn't enough maybe and we've only to send 1 item. He has berries every morning with breakfast.

First day tomorrow! Spending the afternoon name labelling everything.

shouldistop · 11/08/2021 14:49

I used to get iced gems or party rings for my snack Grin

ResilienceWanker · 11/08/2021 14:50

Ooooh. That feels promising. Though I'm not sure how much enforcing they were doing anyway - thought they left that to the BTP. Glad they're bringing in more trains, though - we go out a lot at weekends to see DPs, and the trains have been heaving since May or so, which makes it difficult to distance if we'd wanted to. They're not removing the alcohol ban, though. SadWine Though I did like the chap's comment about it being difficult to control masks "where customers were perhaps more refreshed than usual" Grin

ElephantOfRisk · 11/08/2021 14:55

Would a tub of fruit be one item? Grapes/a couple of plums cut in half with stone removed in a tub?

I always found that screw tops were easier to manage than some of the other types of lids. You could put some cheese and crackers?

My DC weren't the type, but veg sticks and dip?

shouldistop · 11/08/2021 14:57

@ElephantOfRisk maybe a tub would count as one item. He doesn't like veg sticks but absolutely loves chopped plum / cherry tomatoes so I could send that one day.
I thought about mini cheddars but sometimes he opens them too fast and drops half.

God, I can't believe my baby is going to school tomorrow. I feel a bit sick.

ElephantOfRisk · 11/08/2021 14:57

Bag of raisins? rolled up cold meat?

They really want something they can shove in their pocket and run around and eat at the same time to be honest. Sausage roll or a pepperami would be the very job but not sure if that gets past the lunchbox police. Grin

Scottishskifun · 11/08/2021 14:58

@NotSoLongGoodbye

Makes me cross that 'key' workers whether in education, food distribution / manufacturing or whatever were not prioritised after the NHS/care staff. An awful lot of NHS staff aren't front facing / were working from home etc but still got first jab in Jan/Feb - I know as I work alongside them.
I think this is dependent on health boards. Ours they were prioritised on the "bin lists" so actually teachers, front facing council workers and sometimes just the local staff in the coop got called first so most got it from late April/May.

It's frustrating that they didn't do this across Scotland though!

ElephantOfRisk · 11/08/2021 14:59

Crisps probably not allowed but might get away with popcorn?

So lovely seeing them on their first day :)

ResilienceWanker · 11/08/2021 14:59

Awwww! Bet he's soooo excited. Bananas/ apples are good. Chopped carrots/ pepper/ cucumber or something if they'd get eaten and you feel like looking like a Worthy Parent. Confess, we settled into the "crisps that aren't crisps" thing fairly quickly, alternated with non-messy fruit. Things like mini cheddars, mini rice cakes, mini bread sticks in crisp style packets. Or a sucky yoghurt pouch? If you're limited to 1 thing, you could chop up say 2 plums and put in one of those small sealable plastic boxes, and he can eat the pieces individually. May not meet my non-messy criteria, though! (still traumatised by doing that with raspberries once... The uniform and bag did not come off well...)
shouldistop · 11/08/2021 15:01

@ElephantOfRisk oh I know, they've specified 'healthy' and one item so not too restrictive so far as healthy is subjective and surely dependent on a child's whole diet.
Ds1 won't run around while eating. I'm afraid I drummed it into him that he had to stand still or sit down to eat when he was a toddler so he still does it now Grin I suspect most of his snack will just go uneaten as he'll want to play.

latissimusdorsi · 11/08/2021 15:05

@shouldistop something he can eat quickly, or at that age you risk him not eating it because he will want out to play.
Small banana, small apple, cereal bar, tub of grapes (2 handfuls), crackers, mini breadsticks
Nothing needing peeled!

shouldistop · 11/08/2021 15:05

@ResilienceWanker he is so excited! He doesn't realise yet that he's not going to be allowed to play with certain friends and his cousin though due to bubbles. I haven't had the heart to tell him. He accepted the rules at the nursery without any issues though so he'll be ok.

latissimusdorsi · 11/08/2021 15:07

Don't overanalyse the has to be healthy message. Many schools really just mean no sweets/chocolate!

ElephantOfRisk · 11/08/2021 15:08

You are probably already organised, but these little screw top tubs are pretty easy to handle and about the right size though you might want something else for popcorn/cheddars etc.

mibbelucieachwell · 11/08/2021 15:10

Box of raisins
Digestive biscuit
Mini cheese roll
Mini slice of cold pizza if he's okay with it cold
Vegetable crisps

WouldBeGood · 11/08/2021 15:11

Aw, @shouldistop big day!
