Is the end nigh?

I can’t see the fireworks tradition happening again tbh. Even though there is no risk. Apparently they are going ahead as normal Im England

Yeah, I'm a teacher and I've not had my second yet. Can have it in the next few days..

StarryEyeSurprise · 07/08/2021 13:38

Re fireworks - it's councils making excuses to save money ( my theory anyway!).

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 07/08/2021 14:41

Wales joining England in not requiring masks or bubbles in schools so I'm railing at once again Scottish children being singled out for harsher treatment. The impediment to learning is obvious, as, unfortunately, is the fact that education is very far down the list of priorities for the SG.

WouldBeGood · 07/08/2021 14:47

This is really making me angry @Y0uCann0tBeSer10us. Our children let down once again

And no isolating for double jagged close contacts.

Sorry to totally derail the railing, but @titsintiers, you offered Netflix recommendations yesterday (and then I went to bed at 9.30!Blush) Do you (or anyone else) know any good comedy/ lighthearted stuff.. ideally a series with 30-45 min episodes? Doesn't need to be suitable for watching with a 10 year old, but if it is that opens up more timing options! We've got a few more adult/serious things were watching, but are up for something mindless/ quick.

We've got malcolm in the middle on the go as a family, and have also been rewatching old BBC cheese like fawlty towers and vicar of dibley, which DS finds unacceptably amusing even though it's really politically incorrect. Kind of want to find allo allo Blush, for the bad accents, but I don't think that's available. Oh, and taskmaster without the bleeped out bits, which definitely makes us Bad Parents. And outnumbered (ditto).

Without DS, we've recently finished Motherland, Black Books and rewatching Father Ted.

Other threads recommend Schitts Creek and Derry Girls. Any of those good/suitable?

We only have Netflix and Iplayer, but have paid for the channel 4 without adverts (which makes it watchable! Can't stand adverts...).

Thanks!!

Yes. This is my theory too. They are allowed up to 5000 (?) outside, without any extra permissions, which should make enough entry fees for a decent display. Maybe they had to make a decision before the changes were announced, but it does seem like a long time before.

Possibly it's because they can't make extra cash by allowing food stalls or something (the fringe doesn't have its bars/low quality rollover hotdog stalls this year apparently, to stop people gathering close together... Hmm) but I don't think that is actually forbidden from Monday any more (and outdoor eating seems to have been preferred over I door throughout, even with queues). It's most odd.

WouldBeGood · 07/08/2021 15:38

Schitts Creek is just brilliant. I watched it religiously with my boy and he must have been about that age when it started. We both cried when it ended!

Full House and Fuller House were good light watching, it was weird that he liked them. But he was obsessed 😂

@ResilienceWanker have you watched The Durrells ? Didn't watch with DS but I think it would be suitable, we watched it during the first lockdown and it was such a lovely piece of fluff.

ResilienceWanker · 07/08/2021 15:50

Ooh, thanks both! I'll look those up. I remember enjoying the 1980s adaptation of my family and other animals with Brian blessed at about that age, so the durrells may be a good shout. Plus, DH has a bit of a Thing for keeley hawes.

titsintiers · 07/08/2021 18:01

I loved Derry Girls, it reminds me of being that age at that time. Definitely worth a watch.

Have you watched Suits? It's pretty lighthearted. And so is sex education although you couldn't watch with your dc. If you liked Motherland you might like Catastrophe.

I'm watching Virgin River just now and I finished Sex/life (Jesus h Christ 🍆) I also love this is us on Amazon prime.

Agreed. Absolutely not my normal thing but totally loved it.

Derry Girls is possibly the best thing on the the telly.

WouldBeGood · 07/08/2021 18:23

@titsintiers the minute I watch anything even vaguely smutty DS always chooses that moment for a rear foray from his lair,And accuses me of watching porn

WouldBeGood · 07/08/2021 18:26

I might try the Durrells then @forfucksakenett as I thought that but could be worth a go!

forfucksakenett · 07/08/2021 18:58

It's a bit twee or something but I honestly couldn't help but like it. Fair warning though it made me crave a holiday.

WouldBeGood · 07/08/2021 19:11

Sometimes that stuff is reassuring! Going to try it thanks

ElephantOfRisk · 07/08/2021 19:13

Virtually everything I watch seems to have excessive and unneeded shagging in it - no, i'm not watching porn! - It's got to be quite boring tbh, all the fake moaning etc. Whatever happened to leaving something to the imagination? Now i'm sounding like an old prude Grin

AmadeustheAlpaca · 07/08/2021 19:14

I mentioned this on another thread. If you have Disney+, I would recommend My Name is Earl. The second series in particular is excellent. Episodes are around 25 minutes. It’s probably OK to watch with children around, though there are some grown up jokes which might go over young children’s heads. Earl”s ex wife Joy is superb.

Scottishskifun · 07/08/2021 19:21

Re fireworks it's because it's a huge hassle to get it covid compliant so many are finding it too tough as many are community groups etc.
Although it's "up to 5000 people" SG has made the rules that LA have to follow that there is still spacing so it's then dependent on how big the space is (and they make them assess it!) Just wanted to give some background DH is having a nightmare dealing between organisers and the SG rules. They also should be pre-ticketed in advance.

Just another fun thing which is pretty much zero risk taken away by all the additional loops they now have to jump through!

Tell him you're watching see education for Gillian Anderson's wardrobe, it's on point.

YeDancer · 07/08/2021 19:45

Afterlife on Netflix is brilliant

ResilienceWanker · 07/08/2021 20:26

Fab telly recommendations - thanks! I'm definitely giving the durrells a go... Love programmes (and books) that really make you want to go there. Though I've just finished a book set in Mexico, with drug cartels and gang violence and whatnot, and I still started googling holidays in Mexico, so I think I might be a bit holiday-starved. Luckily it going onto the red covid list has saved me from myself for the moment.

Think DS might like Derry girls as it's set around teens/ school, and it's rated pg apparently, so although it may be a bit rude and have some disturbing themes it should be OK! And I'll give Schitt's Creek a check beforehand for DS-appropriateness Wink. DH likes the sound of catastrophe for something child-free as he rates the co-writer/ star who wrote motherland. So that should be us for a bit Grin

I agree about the excessive shagging! DH and I started watching something in Russian the other week, but had to give up because we couldn't work out who was who, and they all seemed to be shagging at least 2 other people, all very gratuitously. But they focused too much on the shagging and not enough on the character development so I had no sympathy for anyone... Nice bums, though. (and the "continue watching" picture was two of the shagging people, which was a bit disturbing to have to see all the time)

ElephantOfRisk · 07/08/2021 20:42

If you are going to Mexico, I thoroughly recommend going to the Pacific coast.

That's ridiculous! How can they insist on particular spacing when they've taken away the requirement for SD in society?! Surely that was the point in removing it - to allow for sufficient numbers at events that made them worthwhile for the organisers! I know they need to allow for emergency evacuations and stuff, so they've never been able to cram folk in unsafely, but to insist on limits above that, for outdoor venues within their own 5000 person limit seems excessive. It does just seem to be that they can't let go of the control over things that should be for LAs to license and set rules for. Can't really blame LAs and businesses getting frustrated and the latter just giving up.

There was a big food festival that was supposed to take place in Edinburgh this weekend that was cancelled last week because they just couldn't meet the requirements the LA (as set by the SG) was wanting, to allow the extra numbers that they needed. So all the small businesses that had ordered in food/ stock / staff for the event were out of pocket. OK, that was under tier 0 rather than "beyond tier 0" but it seems crazy to have so many hoops, for an outdoor event with seemingly minimal risk, when we are supposedly "getting back to normal".
