Things moved quickly so I just started a new one ...

Thanks all for the clarification. We are doing twice weekly testing, but as @Mistressiggi says it's a bit hit and miss just asking the kids instead of relying on the app.

I guess we just wait and see how it evolves. I'll be relieved when they all get their injections.

Thanks @dancemom
Hospital numbers similar to last weekend.
good news they're holding steady as that's the number that really matters

Hospital numbers on the rise again. I suppose they'll keep rising as case numbers are high. Sigh. And on and on it goes.

WouldBeGood · 23/08/2021 15:49

Still no indication that they’re in hospital because of Covid though

ElephantOfRisk · 23/08/2021 15:56

Higher prevalence in the community means that people admitted to hospital for any reason are more likely to test positive regardless of whether they are admitted for covid.

We are either still not measuring properly or not reporting the accurate stats.

It's time testing went back to being a diagnostic test for people who are ill rather than using it for everyone, it's not accurate enough for that really.

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 23/08/2021 16:15

No, but of course the levels in hospital mirror what's going on in the community, so either way they're up.

WouldBeGood · 23/08/2021 16:17

But it’s then not significant that they are in hospital

Scottishskifun · 23/08/2021 16:52

It's so hard to tell because SG despite numerous calls from the statistics authority refuse to break down the numbers.

It's incredibly frustrating and to me the only explanation is to continue to scare monger in order to try and get compliance!

Pootle40 · 23/08/2021 16:59

I keep wondering why this isn't available.....apart from 'it doesn't support a narrative of compliance'. Even the NHS' MI capability must be able to produce......who caught it in hospital / who didn't; who needs Covid medical interventions/ who doesn't. I think at some point the 'cases' will just naturally tail off again anyway. Think we're just on that rollercoaster of numbers and if so, let's stop hearing about them.
IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 23/08/2021 17:59

@WouldBeGood

It is if restrictions are linked to the number of people in hospital. It doesn't matter why they're there, just that they're there.

That's a lot of they're/there's in one sentence!

Scottishskifun · 23/08/2021 18:14

It's less than 3% of cases in hospital which is very low.

It's no longer linked to the restrictions if that was the case it would be in the thousands but vaccinations have broken that link.

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 23/08/2021 19:28

Oh I know, but I'm not sure the Scottish Govt will continue to see it that way over winter, etc.

Haudyourwheesht · 23/08/2021 20:34

They're not really talking about it any more though. When was last time she stood on her wee corona podium?

I've noticed this too @Haudyourwheesht and find it hugely encouraging. What clearer sign that case numbers don't matter any more could there be than no-one batting an eyelid at a fourth spike of cases that is (also) higher than the winter peak? It finally feels like people are moving on.

She must have heard you! New covid update at 12.15 today.

(please don’t shut stuff please don’t shut stuff)

WouldBeGood · 24/08/2021 09:38

It’s really stupid. Blatantly obvious that “cases” would rise with testing for schools

GoldenOmber · 24/08/2021 09:50

I’m a bit worried they’ll want to bring back some kind of restriction so it looks like they’re Doing Something.

But, as I see it: the virus isn’t going away, it is always going to be circulating, so restrictions that stop cases now are only really delaying those cases until some time in the future.

That delay makes sense if we’re waiting for the vaccine rollout. And it makes sense if it would stop the NHS being overwhelmed. But if we’ve already offered a vaccine to everyone eligible, and the NHS is not going to be overwhelmed, what’s the point in delaying for the sake of delaying? “Okay, we need you all to go back to outdoor meetings and no hugs and mass class isolations for six months, and then face the same number of cases anyway in February when we’ll also be dealing with flu.”

So I hope they don’t.

LizzieMacQueen · 24/08/2021 09:56

Most recent case I heard of was caught (they think) in a night club.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 24/08/2021 10:00

"She must have heard you! New covid update at 12.15 today."

Ah shit. Apparently Jason has been on this morning saying how 'concerned' he is about the sharp rise in cases after 5 consecutive days of over 3000 cases and a test positivity of 12.4%. Cases have more than doubled in a week. It can't all be schools though, because it started peaking again before any school-related infections would have worked through. More likely it's related to going to level -1 and night clubs etc. opening. Either way, it's not surprising and something we basically have to go through now it's clear that it's not going to be possible to stop spread, even with vaccines. Even Devi is making noises in that direction now. Better now than in the winter.

One thing I don't quite understand is why we are still getting January level peaks after opening up completely when England, who opened up completely over a month ago, hasn't had anything like that level of peak since. In fact they look remarkably stable, and that's with significantly more 'relaxing' than we've had up here. Is it still the legacy of the 'zero COVID' strategy and being under harsher restrictions last year? It's probably fair to say that our 'immunity' is more skewed towards that from vaccines rather than natural infection than England, and perhaps natural infection gives a more all-round immunity than vaccines? I think I read something along those lines recently. Or is it even possible that our extra 'mitigations' like mandatory masks or screens etc. are actually increasing spread?? Whatever the case, it's a bit weird (although still probably doesn't matter as people are much less likely to get seriously ill).

GoldenOmber · 24/08/2021 10:18

England seem to be following a week or two behind us. Bit later with the June/July wave, bit later to see cases start dropping from that, and even though their unlocking came sooner they were a bit later in removing 10-day isolation for contacts. So I reckon they’ll be doing the same as us by end of this week.

dancemom · 24/08/2021 12:21

• 4,342 new cases reported
• Of tests that reported results, 14.5% were positive
• 10 new reported deaths of people who have tested positive
• 43 people were in intensive care, an increase of two
• 468 people were in hospital, eight more than yesterday

Is that a new record?

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 24/08/2021 12:59

Apparently it's a record, yes.
