Things moved quickly so I just started a new one ...

That school advice is a massive relief as a parent of primary children. I had assumed that for primary kids the 'close contact' would be the whole class as they all mix quite freely (so basically no change) but it does read as though only siblings or kids having sleepovers will be affected which should be much less disruptive 🤞

WouldBeGood · 19/08/2021 09:16

This is actually great news, as it should really stop the mass isolations from school, even for secondary kids.

tiredoftiers · 19/08/2021 09:48

The nhs ggc letter was very clear. No isolation unless contacted by test and protect. Children will only have to isolate if prolonged close contact eg.same household or overnight stays.
Definitely removes a lot of the anxiety we’ve felt for the last year. Felt like every second day there was another email from either school or nursery. It was really destroying me!

• 3,367 new cases of COVID-19 reported
• 39,660 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results
â—¦ 9.0% of these were positive
• 7 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive
• 33 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
• 317 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
• 4,068,806 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 3,512,673 have received their second dose

😬 that’s a lot of cases.

Reminding myself that hospital numbers are still low, so it’s not the kind of problem it would have been this time last year before vaccines…

Direwolfwrangler · 19/08/2021 15:30

@Rae36 for under 18s there is a much slimmer chance of being asked to isolate now. It really will be limited situations like sleepovers etc. Routine contact such as in a classroom unlikely to result in self-isolation being required.

Tileso · 19/08/2021 16:04

Case numbers rocketing. Interesting to see the graphs - peak end of June fell sharply with schools closing, we've been back a week and they're shooting up.
Fingers crossed hospital admissions rate doesn't follow this.
So done with this!

ElephantOfRisk · 19/08/2021 16:14

This is the first day for months when the highest level of cases per 100k has been in the 20-24 bracket rather than the 15-19 age group. I would guess that it could be clubs and gyms but the hospitalisations and ICU figures continue to drop, so vaccination is doing what it should.

GoldenOmber · 19/08/2021 16:24

I think it’s too soon to be due to spread in schools. Rise by test date on the Travelling Tabby graphs jumps high on Monday - 5 days from infection to symptoms plus one day to sort a test, I don’t think enough schools were back last Tues to cause it alone.

ResilienceWanker · 19/08/2021 16:41

No, I assume it's from the generalised relaxation of restrictions on the 9th (nightclubs, changes in close contact isolation policy and so on) rather than schools (hence the greater rise in the 20s and older teens rather than just school age). Though I am worried schools will be used as a scapegoat, with restrictions kept for a bit longer as a result, just because of the timing...

Tileso · 19/08/2021 16:42

How could I forget 'freedom' day was last Monday Grin of course that's why, not schools so much!

WouldBeGood · 19/08/2021 17:01

Will it not be because people tested before going back to school, as was requested? So loads will be asymptomatic positive PCRs after positive LFTs??

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 19/08/2021 17:21

I suspect it's a combination of nightclubs/restrictions easing and possibly schools going back too that's causing the rise in cases. Instinctively it's quite alarming to look at, but I have to keep reminding myself that it doesn't matter as long as the health system is overwhelmed, and that actually we have to go through an exit wave to get to endemic equilibrium. I guess we all have to retrain those instincts to react to cases!

That's definitely part of it for sure
Helensburghmiddleagedmum · 19/08/2021 20:54

It's because parents are testing children again now that they are back at school, I know a lot of parents didn't test during school holidays so that holidays and trips weren't put at risk of having to be cancelled

Thanks Dancermom. The high rates seem to be staying up.

msssm · 21/08/2021 21:11

Forgive me if I'm being dumb but can someone clarify something for me?

My son has just started S5, and has already had a confirmed case in his year. The letter from school states that the other kids only have to isolate if they are contacted by test and trace.

As far as I am aware none of my son's friends have the NHS Scotland app, so given that how could the kids at risk possibly be traced?

forfucksakenett · 21/08/2021 21:29

I think the aim is to minimise contacts tbh. I wouldn't worry. He'll not be traced. It's really only very close contacts. Siblings for example.
GoldenOmber · 21/08/2021 21:59

Mad prediction time with the case rates: I think they’re already peaking now and will start obviously falling again by next week. (This based on what they’re doing if you look at the days breakdown by test date, plus what delta peak did before, plus guesswork about how many unvaxed 20-somethings there can be who haven’t already had it by this point, plus possibly some wishful thinking).

And then in about 10 days time England’s cases will start doing the same and everyone down there will lose their minds.

msssm · 21/08/2021 22:15

Thanks @forfucksakenett but I think I am more worried about my son NOT being able to be informed if he has been in contact and has to isolate. He has asthma, so while not in a high risk group I'd like to know if he has had any exposure.

Just seems crazy to me that they are relying on a system that just doesn't work with kids?

Mistressiggi · 21/08/2021 23:28

Surely they will consult with the positive case about who they have spent the most time with. Not use the contact app.
This won't be foolproof though

Direwolfwrangler · 22/08/2021 06:19

@msssm they are not using the app. Contact tracers are interviewing the case themselves (or parents is too young) to determine the close contacts most at risk. Routine contact in school no longer necessarily a reason for people to be asked to isolate. It’s a huge shift from last term.

Scottishskifun · 22/08/2021 09:40

@msssm you can always choose to do a test on your son if you want. Typically infection will appear on a test 3-5 days after exposure for majority of people.

Not much point isolating if not a close contact though all it does is disrupt lives and education.
