I did manage to book a slot on the day on Sunday, it was busy.

Scottishskifun · 27/07/2021 08:20
@IncludeWomenInThePrequel do you think a lot of that age group had AZ as their first vaccination then decided they didn't want it again with all the bad press?
Yep I think this is a big factor and some wanting Pfizer only to be refused.

Although my area majority of friends in the 40-49 bracket had Pfizer or moderna and were able to request it.

Lockdownbear · 27/07/2021 08:38

The National Museum is well worth a visit. But I've been dodging all Museum type places with covid and masks.

I tolerate masks in shops but actually hate them so avoid places they are needed for pleasure.

Or they're just coming up to the 8 week time to get their second 🤷🏻‍♀️

shouldistop · 27/07/2021 08:53

@riverrunning aw that's a shame, I don't think we'll bother then. That's what the museums are like in Glasgow now too. Ds gets bored.

@IncludeWomenInThePrequel do you think so? I'm 33 and I'm already double jagged but I know the speed of roll out has been different in different areas.

WouldBeGood · 27/07/2021 08:53

@Y0uCann0tBeSer10us I share your concerns about the drive to force people to get vaccinated.

It’s a slippery slope when the state starts interfering with bodily autonomy.

I also think the lack of opening up as promised when the elderly were jagged hadn’t helped. I feel pretty duped, and Im at more risk from Covid (though still tiny) than a slim younger person.

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 27/07/2021 08:54

Thirty and forty somethings double jagged here too.

StarryEyeSurprise · 27/07/2021 08:54

I'm slightly older and still to get my second. We could pick from evenings, weekends etc. I think the roll out has been fab.

shouldistop · 27/07/2021 08:55

Yeah I really don't like the coercion that's going on. And the way the goalposts are constantly changed.

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 27/07/2021 09:02

Yes it's part of it I think.

DH is 48 and only got his second two weeks ago. My boss is 40 and got her second yesterday.

Scottishskifun · 27/07/2021 09:06

I don't like goalposts moving and it pisses me off if they are saying more of the 40s need second jab to open up as that's people's choice.

I don't have a problem with pointing out foreign travel will require it as you can see that already from many countries and I think it's a reasonable compromise for people over 18 rather than banning travel for however long. If I was younger that would be a huge influencer for me.

ResilienceWanker · 27/07/2021 09:45

@riverrunning

I was at the national museum this weekend - they've got a confusing one way system in place, mandatory masks and all touch displays and children's area closed off.

The Galloway hoard exhibition is wonderful, although of course no interactive displays.

My dd still enjoyed it though - museums now are like the museums of the 70s and 80s, without any interactivity but can still look at things in cases.

Yes, this is what we found when we went last summer when they re-opened. It wasn't all that much fun for us to be honest, and we haven't been back, though it was a standard rainy Saturday afternoon thing for us pre-covid. I'm not sure when the interactivity will come back. We've been to museums in England since and they had all their touch screens and children's stuff in place (with sanitiser etc available) so I'm not sure if it's just the Scottish guidance that is restraining them, or if the NMS has just taken it to extremes.

I also find museums a bit tiring at the best of times. I think it's the temp/ humidity they need to maintain, but I always need to sit down a lot! And I found it pretty unbearable masked tbh. I had to find a few corners to take the mask off for a bit without getting shouted at by the staff, and I never have to do that anywhere else! I've found the same at museums and galleries elsewhere, so it's not just me being weird about the NMS.

riverrunning · 27/07/2021 10:05

I love NMS and part of the issue is that a lot of the amazing interactive things they remember and love are closed and it's jarring for them. Even though I explained beforehand what wasn't going to be possible dd was still a bit upset.

If I had to come from glasgow with a 5 year old I wouldn't bother at present, but an hour or 1.5 hours is ok for us as we don't have a long journey.

riverrunning · 27/07/2021 10:07

It's funny resilience I struggled at NMS in the mask - it was a hot day but I never normally find it a problem either

ResilienceWanker · 27/07/2021 10:07

The vaccine thing is worrying. I'm mid 40s and I was only invited for my second jag today. I had to reschedule to make it at least 4 weeks from testing positive, and given free choice I'd have waited a few weeks, as immunity seems best overall at 12 weeks between jags for AZ (though I may have scuppered that a bit by catching it between jags!). However I'm a bit worried that they are winding down the hubs (like they have the hydro), and given how awkward it was to find an appointment at anywhere even vaguely convenient (they weren't offering me any appointments at any of the main hubs when I first looked, apart from the Highland showground which is a 3 hour + round trip on public transport) I just jumped on the only appointment I could get for later this week.

The system just seems peculiar. I don't know why you can't opt out of having an appointment, as they now seem to be promoting the drop in system... then people who do want a guaranteed slot where they don't have to wait would have more choice! As far as I know, if you miss your appointment, they don't give you another one automatically and it's up to you to find a drop in. So why not make appointments easier to come by - especially in the local/ community centres. In Lothian they've got a drop in vaccine party bus, but as far as I can work out they don't publish its whereabouts in advance, only on the day, and it's in wildly different locations every day, so they must work on people just seeing it and thinking, "oh yes, I'll do that" rather than planning ahead to go on a particular day. It must work for some people I assume, but the odds seem stacked against people who can only get to places in walking distance of their home/ work without preplanning/ arranging childcare/ juggling work or care commitments etc!

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 27/07/2021 10:15

Glasgow Science Centre has almost all of its interactive exhibits going, so I guess it must be down to the individual Covid assessment for each place.

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 27/07/2021 10:17

BUT - oh my god the heat of the place in a mask for four hours...we all left feeling like we'd been steamrollered. It's a shame as we would definitely have stayed longer but we were boiled.

riverrunning · 27/07/2021 10:21

That's good to know include I've been entertaining far fetched ideas of museums in Oxford mostly as I want to go but glasgow science centre zooids a better must do!

shouldistop · 27/07/2021 10:21

@IncludeWomenInThePrequel that's good to know about the science centre. Maybe we'll book for there.
Ds1 finishes nursery this Friday and doesn't start school until 12th august so booking a few wee treats we can do in his mini summer holiday.

ResilienceWanker · 27/07/2021 10:27

And from what I read, it seems the "gateway condition" or whatever NS is now calling having fully vaccinated the over 40s applies to all over 40s and not just the 40-49 cohort (who weren't considered at risk enough to get jabbed in the JCVIs first phase so are only just getting the second jag now, especially if people want to keep the 12 week schedule). But I'd have thought that any 50+ who wanted the vaccine would now have had the time to have both jags. So are we really being held up as a society because people have decided they don't want either jag, or their second one, or got it on holiday in England and can't get it registered in Scotland or whatever?! I really don't remember that being a condition of relaxing restrictions earlier!

What proportion of fully vaccinated had the SG decided is OK? Will they now let people have some choice in the vaccine they are offered, if it's a matter of being jabbed or not? Are they really holding off restrictions and "blaming" a group of people doing something entirely legal, but choosing not to have a medical treatment? So many questions....

ResilienceWanker · 27/07/2021 10:28

@IncludeWomenInThePrequel

Ah, that's good to know! Thanks! I suppose the entire point of that place is the interaction, so there wouldn't be much point to it otherwise Grin
IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 27/07/2021 10:38

Yeah - just try not to go on a sunny day! You do have to book, I'm pretty sure.

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 27/07/2021 10:39

I see she is making an announcement today. No doubt to tell us she will actually tell us the real story next week. At least the weather has broke a bit here the heat was crazy. Not complaining about my nice tan though

Bytheloch · 27/07/2021 11:17

Overheating in a mask in a museum sounds grim, take it off or pull it down and breathe. No staff are going to wrestle anyone out of the building for not wearing. If they approach you, say you are about to faint- that will give them something genuine to deal with…

I haven’t given my dc a mask to wear since school finished, which has included cinema, shops and then holiday down south where children don’t have to wear anyway.

Like pp I went to St James quarter and didn’t wear one. Popped it on once in the shops out of respect for the shop staff who are obviously still wearing (and have to, to retain jobs, so I wouldn’t abuse that…they should have same rights as colleagues elsewhere in U.K., but alas not) Dc didn’t wear at all at St James- Covid police at entrance walked towards me, I just started chatting to DC and kept on walking. I would say quite a few folk without.

I’ve stopped wearing to go into public toilets (where many still have cubicles and basins not for use, causes queues inside the toilets ffs!) and for standing up to leave in coffee shops after having sat there to drink my coffee🤷‍♀️ Don’t use the app, don’t check in- most places don’t ask you and if they do, just look busy on your phone…leave anywhere which demands you behave a certain way, just take your business elsewhere.

Off back down south before school holidays are over, can’t wait to live again like a grown up making choices. Theatre tickets and museums booked. I’m double jabbed- would refuse it for my child- so my responsibility on a society level is entirely mine.

No fucks given for what television’s Nicola Sturgeon is announcing today or next week, she needs to get back to the day job now, so many other aspects of Scotland in crisis, that needs to be the priority (which should include sustaining long covid support through the NHS and ensuring the system is robust ahead of the winter months).

Long post, but that’s my rail todayGrin

WouldBeGood · 27/07/2021 11:26

I’m with you @Bytheloch and taking a similar approach though I’m not really going anywhere because it’s too depressing and stressful.
