So irresponsible. Here we go again. Will Glasgow ever be out of lockdown?

@RaspberryCoulis

Who's defending it? Not me, the behaviour in George Square is indefensible.

But I'm not going down the sectarian "rangers bad" route which a lot of Scotsnet posters seem desperate to lead us down. Football attracts a large toxic element. Rangers displayed that toxic element yesterday, it will be another club next week, next month, because that element exists in EVERY CLUB. When the Euros come to Glasgow and scotland play England, the toxic Scottish element will all band together against the toxic English element.

This really is dillusional beyond comparison.

Unfortunately there has been abuse scandals withing both celtic and rangers. But using child abuse as a stick to beat other fans with is the lowest of the low. You need to get a bit more clued up @Weareallabitcomplicated

Or stop listening to your hibs fan hubby...

Morgan12 · 16/05/2021 18:49

@broxigirl you mean the 'terrorists' who were forced to fight for their freedom? And the British Soldiers who took their land and killed their families?

Irish songs are mostly about hope and freedom, the fight for a very real cause and about the men women and children who gave their lives for that.

Rangers songs are usually about the killing of those people. Songs of hatred and bile. See Penny Arcade for starters.

titsintiers · 16/05/2021 18:49

Jesus Christ yet another scotsnet thread makes me want to weep for our future.

The thread is criticising the rangers fans outrageous behaviour. Rightly so.

To bring up historical child sex abuse cases is frankly abhorrent.

Are we all so entrenched in outdated culture and beliefs that we cannot collectively criticise said behaviour?

forfucksakenett · 16/05/2021 19:03

Even more vileness being reported.

Here we go again with the Rangers fans.

There are loads of songs with hatred in though tbf!
I mean as a English person flower of Scotland is no bed of roses with the interjections..... 😂 I still sing it at the rugby though!

Broxigirl · 16/05/2021 19:15

Celtic = Good
Rangers = Bad

Gies a fucking break. Are some Rangers fans complete and utter arseholes - absolutely. But save me the sanctimonious bullshit that Celtic fans are all angels that can do no wrong 🤮.

Christinayangtwistedsister · 16/05/2021 19:18

No I don't think Celtic fans can do no wrong, however, this thread was started about yesterday's incident .

Away and have a meeting with yourself
ssd · 16/05/2021 19:41

Nobody here has said Celtic fans are angels. Your need to wind your neck in.

Totaldogsbody · 16/05/2021 19:59

Glasgow was a no go area for most Glaswegians yesterday. The Police and City Council should have had George Square cordoned off. After months of lockdown ordinary Glaswegians couldn't go for a drink the Saturday before we go into lockdown again, because drunken Rangers fans caused havoc. The First Minister and Justice Minister come out today condemning the celebrations and anti-catholic singing but it's too little too late as always. George Square was wrecked a few short weeks ago by the same supporters, every Scottish person could have told you it was going to be the same on Saturday so why was it allowed to happen again? It's about time the Scottish Government stopped paying lip service to this racist anti-Catholic behaviour but they're too scared because it's a vote loser. The Rangers fans who stayed at home celebrating with family and letting off fireworks were the fans that their club can be proud of but unfortunately the minority give the majority a bad press again.

The sex abuse scandal at Celtic is off the scale. It was an organised ring covered up by those at the very top.

Abusers were invited back into the club even after convicted.

Have your tit for tat fighting over football but please don't make out Celtic aren't part of the biggest sex abuse cover up in Scotland.

Disgraceful.

Scottishskifun · 16/05/2021 22:58

I think Celtic and Rangers should look at what has been done at other English clubs to curb violence and behaviour.
Extensive CCTV systems within the grounds, life time bans for any sort of abhorrent behaviour, working extensively on joint community projects with fan clubs etc etc etc.

It is an ongoing battle but Scottish football and some fans behaviour reminds me of football clubs in England in the 90s. English clubs still have issues of course they do but they also work hard to stamp it out!

I don't see the same strict reprocussions reported in Scottish football.

Quincie · 17/05/2021 05:02

We have a totally ineffectual government - so busy proving to the public that we must get independence that actual life in Scotland is stuck in the past.
This ongoing racism and the appalling drugs deaths are unjustifiable in a small country. I have no idea what they are thinking of - oh but we need named persons and baby boxes as we can't be trusted with our own children. Sad.

StarryEyeSurprise · 17/05/2021 07:13

The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012 was an Act of the Scottish Parliament which created new criminal offences concerning sectarian behaviour. This was first proposed by the SNP.

The Act was repealed on 20 April 2018.

Quincie · 17/05/2021 08:02

WAsn't it unenforcable? Hence repealed.
A bit like this latest law on hate crimes. You need to start with teh society and build from teh bottom not come up with random solutions like we are all idiots and a bit of threats from the police will fix us.
But surely you need to tackle this from childhood - not sticking plasters after the damage is done.

Selkiesarereal · 17/05/2021 08:55

If I thought the Offensive Behaviour Act would have helped I would have supported it wholeheartedly but I don’t believe it is.

I really did find this thread quite upsetting yesterday as just scrapping back really did unveil how ingrained the sectarian mentality is in the west of Scotland from both “sides.”

This doesn’t exist anywhere else in Scotland and why it is still so prevalent now in the 21st century is a national embarrassment.

I don’t know what the answer is but maybe everyone needs to stop with the football tribalism for a start it isn’t helping.

Wakeupin2022 · 17/05/2021 09:15

But surely you need to tackle this from childhood - not sticking plasters after the damage is done.

Add to that the damage the political environment in Scotland is doing. This is a powder keg that is beginning to go off.

I don't excuse anything that happened over the weekend. It's appalling and these people are scum but it's clear from the polarised and sectarianism views that are allowed and acceptable ( very obvious here) because they are not the blue half of Glasgow that this is a problem are only going to get worse. Yes Rangers fans will be the bad guys, but it doesn't help anyone in Glasgow or anywhere else in Scotland.

The SNP do have a lot to answer for with their divisive politics.

ArnoldBoo · 17/05/2021 09:31

We are a mixed family- supporters of both teams in the family, except me who hates football.
I took our DD to her dance class in town. Shed missed so much due to lockdown and she pleaded with me.
She was terrified on the drive home, guys standing on bins stamping and shouting, screaming horrible things, blasting horns, letting off flairs. A drunk man came right up to her window and screamed something we couldn't even understand. She's a 5 year old girl in a pink ballet outfit for fucks sake.
Anyone who thinks this is remotely OK needs get some standards.
And yes, I have blamed myself for taking her but shouldn't she be able to go to her paid for Ballet class regardless of who wins a sporting competition?

charliebrown59 · 17/05/2021 09:44

Your poor dd, that's awful, mine would've been so scared by that. We could all do with a bit more trying to focus on what we've got in common and improving our local environment after the pandemic.

The football thing seems a mad and sad outlet of a lot of depressed and angry people but as usual they're hurting others with their behaviour.

thedevilinablackdress · 17/05/2021 09:55

That's awful ArnoldBoo.
This is what we should remember - just how anti social football crowds are. And not just in extreme circs like Saturday.
They can make towns and cities no go areas on a regular basis. I've been that scared child (and adult) worried that the train I was on its going to crash because of all the drunk men jumping up and down. Or forgetting to avoid the Subway at a certain time on a certain day because it'll be full of drunk belligerent swearing crowds. Keeping my head down and not making eye contact while listening to sectarian singing and violent chants.
Etc. Etc. Etc...

Quincie · 17/05/2021 10:45

Well next final should be crowd free - hit them where it hurts. Or if Rangers are in it, only the opposing supporters. Yes trouble would kick off elsewhere but bring in enough police to deal with it ( if Scotland has enough police).

You just get more wringing of hands.
There is anger at Israel and Palestine - that dates from 1940s - sectarianism dates from 1700s FGS, they need to grow up and move on.

Morgan12 · 17/05/2021 10:56

The stuff coming out on Twitter today is just awful. Police injured etc. Why was this riot allowed? Especially after last time when the Rangers fans did the exact same thing. This shouldn't have been allowed in normal times when covid didn't exist either.

Also the chant 'I'd rather be a p.a.k.i than a Tim' is just a whole new low for these animals. Scotlands shame indeed.
