â—¦ 2.8% of these were positive
• 0 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive (noting that Register Offices are now generally closed at weekends)
• 5 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
• 94 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
• 3,121,945 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 1,852,179 have received their second dose

Hospital numbers rising, I think? Plus test positivity but I always wonder if that's because fewer people go to get tested on Sunday.

florafoxtrot · 24/05/2021 14:31

Yes, 49 patients in GG&C in contrast to 21 this time last week. ICU numbers seem fairly consistently low though so hopefully that means people aren't becoming as seriously ill.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 24/05/2021 14:44

Wow @florafoxtrot is that right, hospitalisations have more than doubled? That's not brilliant is it.

Pootle40 · 24/05/2021 14:50

They're not hospitalised WITH Covid. They are people in hospital for any reason who have tested positive for Covid. So because they don't share that detail with us we don't know how many are being treated for Covid. I'd guess not that many.
Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 24/05/2021 14:52

The ICU figures are encouraging, and what decisions will be based on by the sounds of it. My mind is a bit blown by reportedly half of vaccine appointments being no shows in Glasgow though, especially given what's going on there. The weakness of the summons-by-letter system rather than letting people book their own appointments now we're down to younger age groups with more commitments maybe? I hate to think how much vaccine wastage that adds up to if it needs to be used on the day.

florafoxtrot · 24/05/2021 15:02

Yes, fair to say we don't know how many have been hospitalised with COVID vs. how many have tested positive while in hospital but the figures are right enough.

latissimusdorsi · 24/05/2021 15:18

Yes I was appalled at all those wasted appointments too @Y0uCann0tBeSer10us
Wonder if that's letters not arriving in time? We had that issue in Lothian couple of months ago when loads of people received the letter after their appointment! Wasn't on the scale of Glasgow numbers though

ashmts · 24/05/2021 15:33

@Y0uCann0tBeSer10us This is just anecdotal, but one of my NHS colleagues just got her letter (late 30s). She's already been vaccinated through work. She called to ask how to cancel and was told it was fine, just don't turn up. So she'll have been recorded as a no-show. I wonder how many others are in the same position.

Scottishskifun · 24/05/2021 15:41

It's not very clear on the letter it should say in big bold writing call this number to cancel at the top but it doesn't.

Our local vaccination centre is seeing up to 50% no shows its how I got mine sooner as a bin list. Younger people move far more frequently with rental accommodation etc as well!

Why it's taken them so long to set up a text service I don't know and even then it's only for the next set!

ResilienceWanker · 24/05/2021 16:01

Why it's taken them so long to set up a text service I don't know and even then it's only for the next set!

I was asking myself the same! It shows they have the capability of people signing up to say "please text me when you have made my appointment so I know when/where it is before getting my letter". But have chosen not to deploy it for anyone 30 or older. Which is nice...

Us oldies had to fill in the "missing appointments" form or phone the helpline - when we didn't think we needed help, and didn't know if we had missed our appointment or not, but wanted to know if we had one and when it could possibly be, to allow us to plan our lives. So making us seem neurotic and naggy because we just couldn't be patient and wait for our letter like we've been told to.

I know I'm sounding bitter, and I think it's great that the 18-29s can get the advance warning as default if they want it - but really, would it have been so difficult to roll that out to everyone (for second doses as well...)? I'm the last person to claim that everything is set up to disadvantage women and favour men, but surely the way they have chosen to do it IS biased against women, who are less likely to be able to drop everything to make a short notice appointment, at any point in the week, somewhere within about an hours drive (assuming they have access to a car). Maybe reading "invisible women" has been bad for my blood pressure

tiredoftiers · 24/05/2021 16:03

The number of no shows is absolutely gutting. Suspected this might be the case. Anecdotally I know of someone who received their letter after their appointment, and someone else who is missing from system. There are so many willing folk ready to roll up their sleeves, it doesn’t matter who’s arm when it comes to the overall good of society.
Which I guess is where we are now headed asking 18-29 year olds to register for their vaccination.

DH was similar and he thought he could cancel his appointment on-line but you can't, only rearrange it. So then he had to phone to do it, they said it was cancelled but they could have been bullshitting him. We were tempted to send DS1 (20) in his place and not bother cancelling but didn't want to take someone's space. Wish we had done now tbh.

SempreSuiGeneris · 24/05/2021 16:09

Given the * on missing NHS data I wouldn't focus on figures today too much. Remember the default is to overstate hospital figures because admissions are automatically counted but discharges are counted with a lag (see last Summer when Scotland ended up with overstated hospital figures due to this).

Surprised if this is the scale of missing appointment attendees because about 2/3 are 2nd dose.

latissimusdorsi · 24/05/2021 16:22

Ah if 2/3 were 2nd doses that sounds more like letters not arriving Hmm

ResilienceWanker · 24/05/2021 16:28

On the hospital numbers rising, it's not great (however the Covid cases are being counted and so on) but I do think it helps put things in perspective to see the last months data (with a slight increase in the past week or so) compared to the last 3 months! And even in the past month, icu cases (and deaths) are still easily in single figures, which they haven't been since last summer.

You're right @ResilienceWanker and that is a better graphic. I think you just get used to seeing them come down so going up again causes a bit of alarm.

I called the other day to cancel mine and she definitely said she'd cancelled it on the system.

ashmts · 24/05/2021 18:30

@Haudyourwheesht Maybe it's dependent on health board, but they definitely told her they couldn't/wouldn't cancel the appointment.

florafoxtrot · 24/05/2021 19:21

I had the same experience as @Haudyourwheesht and so did DH. There was a long queue to speak to someone - which did move quite quickly - and they were really grateful we had called to confirm the cancellation and she could see in the system that we'd already been jabbed.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 25/05/2021 11:31

Update today at 12.15pm if anyone wants to watch.

Scottishskifun · 25/05/2021 12:22

My god I think she's about to backtrack on the levels!

dancemom · 25/05/2021 12:25

Nicola Sturgeon begins with an update of the latest coronavirus figures.
The first minister confirms that a further 318 people have tested positive for Covid – which is 2% of the tests carried out yesterday.
This takes the total number of positive cases in Scotland to 232,661.
There are 97 people in hospital with recently confirmed Covid-19, an increase of three, and six in intensive care, up one from yesterday.
There have also been two more deaths recorded in the past 24 hours of people who tested positive in the previous 28 days.
That brings the total number of deaths by that measurement to 7,666.
