For some reason I'm very low about all this going on and on and on seemingly with no end in sight. Just as we seem to be approaching the finishing line, yet another variant makes an appearance - we've had Kent, South African, Brazilian and now Indian - that I'm aware of.
We had a night away in a hotel and then got abuse from SiL for visiting elderly PiL to do shopping and welfare visit because "You're in tier 3 and they're in tier 2"

I honestly can't see my life going back to anything like normality again Sad

WouldBeGood · 16/05/2021 10:30

And none of these variants evade the vaccines, nor are more lethal.

Been in Israel for weeks and no spike. And in the US.

I’m very down too @RaraRachael.

RaspberryCoulis · 16/05/2021 11:16

Indeed, @WouldBeGood. BBC reporting this morning that people in hospital because of the new variant in Bolton are people who were eligible for a jag and chose not to get it.

Health secretary has said this morning that the vaccine works well against teh Indian variant.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57134181

Also agree that there will be other variants, forever, and we can't just stay locked up.

Scottishskifun · 16/05/2021 13:00

@RaraRachael ignore your SIL they are talking rubbish! Everyone is in tier 3 til tomorrow for starters not least to point out that welfare visits have always been allowed!

Unfortunately it's the nature of the virus it will keep mutations it's natural its why it's impossible to now eradicate it now it's out of the box but it will become endemic (so just circulates) rather then pandemic hopefully in the next year or so.

The vaccination programme also makes a big difference in protecting people from getting seriously ill.

conkersarebonkers · 16/05/2021 14:44

The timing of this variant is unfortunate because we're not quite far enough along with the vaccine rollout yet. When we have a higher percentage of the population fully vaccinated, it will be much harder for new variants to get established here.

So this is a hiccup for sure, but we'll be more ready by the time the next variant comes along. It won't always be like this!

I'm down today, feel like there is a good chance my Lake District holiday won't happen, I'm so over going through this again. If we didn't have school age DS and if I wasn't moving to a new job ( same company) tomorrow I'd take off a few weeks and travel round the UK while I still can.
Of course our lockdown loving SNP supporting neighbours are retired with a caravan so off on their third trip since easing of restrictions. I just don't have it in me to have our holiday plans destroyed again, but hey ho, sod all I can do about it.

But hey at least we got to go to Fazenda for lunch.

WouldBeGood · 16/05/2021 15:42

@rookiemere hopefully sense will be seen sharpish.

Any hospital numbers?

Scottishskifun · 16/05/2021 15:51

@rookiemere I would leave it with the company to decide and not say anything personally!
My experience of visits to England is they don't have a clue what the rules are in Scotland or the different categories or rules!
The English app didn't accept scottish home postcodes so you just use the address where your staying!
Obviously you can take a lateral flow test before you go but I wouldn't be cancelling unless they do it!

rookiemere · 16/05/2021 15:55

@Scottishskifun it's because of the numbers under the English rules.

There will be 12 of us from 3 (kind of 4) households on 25th June - would have been fine if the English changes due on 20th June go ahead, but now I suspect they'll be delayed for a couple of weeks which basically pushes our holiday into 2022.

I know it's nothing in the grand scheme of things, but I'd actually allowed myself to believe it might happen and so it might but now rather than 90% likely it's 50/50 at best I feel.

Scottishskifun · 16/05/2021 16:00

Anyone got a campervan or tent?

Or 2 families "merge" so then it's just 2 households? All you need to do is 2 families to give the same address!

This is my biggest rail of allowing loads of strangers together but not family or friends! The riskier one is people you don't know who haven't been careful or done a test etc! It makes zero sense!!!!

forfucksakenett · 16/05/2021 16:36

Thanks @dancemom those numbers look to be creeping up. Sad

WouldBeGood · 16/05/2021 16:45

Still just 64 in hospital, 3 of those in ICU according to the SG figures and travelling tabby. That’s across Scotland.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 16/05/2021 17:25

According to Tabby, the vast majority of the cases are in the 25-44 and 0-14 age groups (so a lot of routine lateral flows maybe?), with essentially none in the oldest age groups. These age groups wouldn't be expected to be seriously affected, and most of the oldest are fully vaccinated now so I doubt we'll see it spreading up the age groups either. Very different situation to before Christmas now the vaccine is breaking the link between infection and death.

charliebrown59 · 16/05/2021 17:29

Fingers crossed - I really don't want to face another summer lock down in my local area!

Scottishskifun · 16/05/2021 17:57

The good news is that given the number of tests it's still low and still under 5%

Also hospital rates are low long may it continue!

Let's hope their is a hard push to get jab rates up to the max level they can be!

We are off to England tomorrow I don't think I've been this excited since the night before my wedding! All DS has said all day is "seeing Gran and Grandad tomorrow"
He took his trunky to the door and asked if we could go now (he's 2!)❤️
People and govt really have underestimated the effects especially on young children!

rookiemere · 16/05/2021 17:58

@Scottishskifun our relatives have a caravan but not sure they'd be allowed to use it beside the holiday cottage. If we can't all go we can cancel or reschedule for the fourth time and we'll book a Premier Inn nearby them for a few nights, if we're still allowed to travel by that stage.
I feel so glum about it all, hopefully it's all just a blip and they'll find that the vaccines work against the Indian strain and it's all fine .

rookiemere · 16/05/2021 17:58

Enjoy your trip @Scottishskifun Smile

WouldBeGood · 16/05/2021 18:08

Oh, have a great time @Scottishskifun! Your DS 💕

ssd · 16/05/2021 18:10

@Scottishskifun, have a wonderful time! And keep posting here, im not going anywhere fun and will live through you Grin

Scottishskifun · 16/05/2021 18:32

Haha will do and will report back!

DS is already booked in for softplay!
I know many don't see that as an important thing but for me it's great knowing he will have something which isn't another outdoor walk!

WouldBeGood · 16/05/2021 18:34

Oh. That makes me happy @Scottishskifun. Much as I loathed the hell that is soft play, I took mine as they loved it so much.

titsintiers · 16/05/2021 18:58

@Scottishskifun have a lovely break, you so deserve it after your start to 2021

charliebrown59 · 16/05/2021 19:39

Have a lovely break @Scottishskifun I absolutely get the soft play - I've had enough of drizzly walks or puddle jumping to last me several years!

Myotherusernamewastakenagain · 16/05/2021 19:57

@WouldBeGood

Still just 64 in hospital, 3 of those in ICU according to the SG figures and travelling tabby. That’s across Scotland.
The hospital figures don't get updated at the weekend. Hopefully they'll continue to fall tomorrow.
